Japanese satsuma cup and saucer is decorated with birds and bamboo with extensive gold detailing. Cup measures 2" tall and 3 1/8" across and saucer measures 5 3/8" across. Both pieces are in good condition with no chips or cracks. The saucer has paint wear to the trim and the cup has a small gold bump of extra slip or clay on bottom rim of saucer from manufacture. Beautiful near perfect porcelain Satsuma cup. The pattern is Mother/Son according to the Geisha Girl Encyclopedia. The rim and face of the cup are in perfect condition with no chips or wear. The gold detail is spectacular. Signed. In Japanese, in gold over red on the bottom. There is a small chip-let in the foot of the cup that I didn't notice until I was investigating VERY closely. There is also a small hairline crack that does not go through and is also in the foot of the cup. These two small imperfections are photographed in the last photo. This set is absolutely fantastic! The geisha lantern pattern is by far one of my favorites. There is such great detail and vivid color. I am also a sucker for the koi lantern. The porcelain is so beautifully fine with elegant gold detail and a bold red and gold rim. The flower relief pattern on the outside of the cup has many colors. Fugi hand painted. The white specks are Mother of Pearl. The mark on the base is a Satsuma mark. The cup is about 5" in diameter and 3" tall. Over the many years since the cup was made the wood has contracted and expanded causing the cup to be somewhat oval in shape. Please examine the photos carefully. Satsuma earthenware is somewhere between porcelain and pottery. This is handpainted with thick enamels and gold leaf. Often in elaborate decoration& themes directly from the Japanese ethos of legends, court life& artistic values. Crackles are a very important characterists of Satsuma wares during early and middle satsuma periods. In fact the ceramists were careful not to hide or cover up all the entire crackle ground because the crackle enhances by producing a play of light on the surface. These were decorated with figures of immortals dressed in dark robes with guilded detail and a large white headed dragon. The cup handle is also a dragon head. The detailsof the hand painted faces are outstanding. The marks: The cross with the circle is Shimazu Mon or the family crest of the clan that ruled Satsuma Han. Cracks or repairs. The other cup has a very, very tiny shallow approx. 1/16" glaze flake at the outer edge. This exquisite cup and saucer was painted by the renowned Meiji artist Gyokushu. The cup and saucer depicts Rakans in various activities. Each piece has borders with textile patterns. The cup is 1 7/8 inches(4.69 cm) high and 4 5/8 inches(11.56 cm) across including the handle. The saucer is 5 3/8 inches(13.44 cm) in diameter. Both pieces are signed Satsuma Yaki. Gyokushu Gu. This piece dates to the late 19 th century. Pieces made by Gyokushu are pretty scarce. There are no chips. Cracks or repairs. There is some browning and crazing especially in the cup.
