Here we have ... morea lovely antique item. A Japanese tea cup and saucer hand painted in iron red and gilded on porcelain, the cup marked underneath Hirado, which is in Kyushu, Japan. Hirado is about 7km from Arita. It dates from the late 19th Century possibly early 20th century. The outside of this cup is decorated with two panels each with a different scene. One has three seated people. The other has three samurai warriors, one with a bow and arrow another with a sword the third with a standard or flag. The saucer is decorated with chrysanthemums and flowers. The base has a hand painted mark in Kanji characters that says Hirado. The cup stands approximately 2 1/4 inches high and is approx 2 1/2 inches diameter and the saucer 4 1/2 inches diameter. The saucer is very good conditionwith a little rubbing to the gilding the cup has a hairline crack. It weighs 115g unpacked. Where possible I will give postal discount for multiple purchases. Beautiful near perfect porcelain Satsuma cup. The pattern is Mother/Son according to the Geisha Girl Encyclopedia. The rim and face of the cup are in perfect condition with no chips or wear. The gold detail is spectacular. Signed. In Japanese, in gold over red on the bottom. There is a small chip-let in the foot of the cup that I didn't notice until I was investigating VERY closely. There is also a small hairline crack that does not go through and is also in the foot of the cup. These two small imperfections are photographed in the last photo. The motifs are first outlined with cobalt blue. Manganese black, and iron red and then enamels are applied over them. After firing. This is a early Taisho Era(c.1912- 1920) or maybe earlier antique kutani sakazuki(sake cup) Kutani is a kiln in Japan famous for making ceramic ware such as this. On the bottom it is marked with the two Kutani characters meaning it could have been from the original brothers kiln. It is made of a high fire pottery for strength and durability as it was used to drink hot sake. The glaze is a brownish gray crackle; the camera and lighting brought out blue hues that are not there. This cup is beautifully aged and in very good condition including the gilding. The size makes it the perfect sake cup for sipping your evening sake! Measuring 3 1/8" in diameter and 1 3/4" deep. The covered cup looks like a jar and measures 4 3/4" high to top of the lid and bottom is 3 1/4" tall and 2 5/8" wide. The lid is just over 3" across. Description: A very pretty. Japanese eggshell(translucent) porcelain, Kutani, cup and saucer. Delicately hand painted with a country scene with the sacred Mount Fuji in the distance and two birds on the ground and amongst white flowers. The scene runs around the entirety of the main body of the cup and is repeated on the upper face of the saucer. The tubular style handle of the cup is decorated with a small dot pattern in clusters so as to mimic stylised flower petals. Any questions- please ask! MoreJapanese porcelains. Dimensions: Cup: Height/depth approximately 2.25 inches/ 5.75 cms with a diameter of approximately 2.25 inches/ 5.75 cms. Saucer: Diameter of approximately 4.75 inches/ 12 cms. Makers Marks: Not particularly clear but we take the view that the first character mark is'Kutani' with the artist's signature in Japanese Characters also- see photos.
