Deep blue and highlighted in gilt. The detailing is very fine and features scenes of fish, birds and paulownia flowers. They are all in excellent antique condition- no chips or cracks. The paint and gilt are well preserved with some gilt loss at the rims as seen in the closeup pics. The underside of the cups have Fuki Chosun marks(roughly"good fortune and long life" in Japanese) The cups each measure approx. 2 1/4" in diameter and 1 1/2" high. There are maker's marks in characters on the bottom. Which we are unable to read. These cups are thin and delicate. Like most Japanese tea cups, so that the user may gauge the temperature of the tea they contain. They are hand painted in a stunning satin red. With gilded vines, a white shell and some cobalt blue elements around the base. The interior is decorated with a red, blue and gold flower. These cups are in great condition. Antique Japanese Pewter Sake Cups With Kanji Inscription
Two antique pewter( sake cups. The question mark is an indication of I'm not really positive of their composition as they could even be lead considering their weight and softness. Both cups measure just over 3 1/2" approx 9 cm) in diameter and 1 1/8" approx 2.9 cm) in height and wear 2.5 ounces each. The first cup. Depicting the sun rising over a board fence with flowers, carries a six character Kanji inscription along the lower edge of the bowl, and another 8 character Kanji inscription encircling the underside of the bowl. Other similiar cups with the underside inscriptions generally are commemorative. The second cup depicts two men with brooms under a tree with the sea shore behind them and the rising sun in the distance. There are no insciptions. This cup has heavy corrosion on the base and surface corrosion on the underside ... moreof the bowl. From what research I have been able to do on the internet. Each is hand painted in underglaze blue in an alternating design of Ho-o birds(Japanese Phoenix bird) and blossoms on white porcelain. The cups are footed and an overall hexagonal shape. They are in overall excellent antique condition. One of the cups has a very small old glaze pop on the rim of the cup as shown in the closeup of the pics. Although it can be difficult sometimes to decipher Japanese from Chinese porcelain in some instances. I believe these are Japanese based on the type of porcelain and the style of the birds.
