Tashiro Zo literally means"Made by Tashiro" Tashiro Ichiroji operated a shop in Yokohama and had distinctively decorated pieces. Sometimes by Kutani trained artists. Tashiro Ichiroji was a famous ceramic artist during the Meiji era and exhibited his porcelain wares at major international exhibits. He was internationally famous for his porcelain, cloisonne, cloisonne on porcelain, and earthenware goods. Tashiro Ichiroji's early porcelain works during the Meiji era have written signatures and were sold under his company Tashiro-ya. In general. All kanji handwritten signatures bearing the name Tashiro were made during the Meiji era. Later around the Taisho to early Showa period, his goods were marked with various English backstamps and sold under his company Tashiro Shoten(the famous elephant backstamp) The original name of the company was Tashiroya(variation spelling Tashiro-ya) located in Nagoya and began in 1878 by Tashiro Ichiroji. Here we have ... morea lovely antique item. A Japanese tea cup and saucer hand painted in iron red and gilded on porcelain, the cup marked underneath Hirado, which is in Kyushu, Japan. Hirado is about 7km from Arita. It dates from the late 19th Century possibly early 20th century. The outside of this cup is decorated with two panels each with a different scene. One has three seated people. The other has three samurai warriors, one with a bow and arrow another with a sword the third with a standard or flag. The saucer is decorated with chrysanthemums and flowers. The base has a hand painted mark in Kanji characters that says Hirado. The cup stands approximately 2 1/4 inches high and is approx 2 1/2 inches diameter and the saucer 4 1/2 inches diameter. The saucer is very good conditionwith a little rubbing to the gilding the cup has a hairline crack. It weighs 115g unpacked. Where possible I will give postal discount for multiple purchases. The tray/saucer measures approximately 8 1/4" long and 4 5/8" and is really quite gorgeous along with the very thin and delicate cup. Really beautiful painted pattern on both pieces and thick gold trim. Very little wear at all. I believe this has only been displayed and never actually used. The centers of the flowers are painted gold with miniature gold dots applied on top. There are leaves that have a rust color to them and they are outlined with a gold stenciling effect. The rims and handle are also done in gold. The detail is absolutely incredible and it is hard to imagine the time and talent needed to produce these pieces. Kutani Eggshell Cup & Saucer Signed - Chrysanthemums and Coins
Lovely and Unusual Kutani Eggshell Cup and Saucer- Signed Beautifully handpainted chrysanthemums. A gilt Mille Fleur decoration on the cup and saucer rims and auspicious coins all combine to make a striking Kutani piece. I assume it's Kutani from the shape, materials and the typical red markings on both the cup and the saucer. My guess would be early 20th century. In researching this piece I was unable to find anything quite like it. The painted Chrysanthemums are very well done. The colors are pale and pastel which contrast nicely with the bolder Mille Fleurs edge and the black and gold coin motif. The porcelain is very delicate and translucent. There is some wear and fritting on the base of the saucer. But all other edges are excellent. There are a few very minor stress lines in the glaze on the underside of the saucer of perhaps a ... more1/2 inch. DETAILS OF ITEM The Kutani porcelain demitasse cup measures 2 inches tall by 2.38 inches in diameter at its widest girth excluding the handle and the saucer measures 4 inches in diameter. The image on both cup and saucer shows a peacock and Peony flowers hand painted in gold. White and red colors. There is a secret image of a young geisha girl's face on the bottom of the cup and she smiles shyly when you hold the cup against the light. Lithophane was first invented in 1827. Using the different ... morethickness of the translucent bisque porcelain produces this remarkable three-dimensional image. The artist first carves the image into beeswax. The translucency of the wax allows the artist to see the result of this work. A plaster casting is taken from the wax mold then a fine porcelain paste is pressed into this mold. Lithophane coffee cups like this one were produced during the later 1940's through 1950's in Japan and the condition of this set is very good with just a bit of gold loss to the saucer. The age of this set is from the 1950's and it is marked"Kutani" at the bottom of the saucer. Kutani 19th Century Hand Painted and Gold Encrusted Cabinet Cup and Saucer
Late 19th century Kutani hand painted. Gold encrusted porcelain cabinet cup and saucer. Three highly detailed. Hand painted cartouches surround the inside of both the cup bowl and the saucer with depictions of six robed scribes. One scribe appears to being reading from a scroll, while another looks down on another document next to a low table. Ornate gold encrusted/moriage designs fill the space between the cartouches. While over 125 years old(the set has no country of origin markings as required by the McKinley Act of 1890) the gold painted handle shows no wear indicating that the cup was not used, but a display piece, i.e. cabinet cup" On the underside of both the cup and saucer is a gold on scarlet hand painted character"Yama" mountain) which may refer to the kiln of Arita Sarayame. This set is simply gorgeous! I have researched for days now to find out all I could about this set and have learned quite a lot.These are eggshell porcelain with a 5 color floral design trimmed in gold. KutaniYaki has such a wonderful history lesson. Kutaniyaki. ROMANTIC HISTORY OF 350 YEARS SUPPORTED BY"GOSAI"FIVE COLORS) Ko-Kutani of early stage progressed under the support of the Daishoji clan in 1655. After the discovery of potter's clay at a mine near Kutani village. Saijiro Goto was sent to Arita in Kyushu district to master ceramics and brought back the techniques. Though the Ko-Kutani kilns developed their bold and lovely style, they disappeared suddenly in about 1700. The cause of the decline is still unknown. Then the Kasugayama kiln opened at Kanazawa under the control of Kaga clan about eighty years after the close ... moreof the Ko-Kutani kiln. And starts the period of Restored Kutani. A lot of kilns were built such as Mokubei kiln the Yoshida-ya kiln. The Miyamoto kiln, and Eiraku kiln, developing each special style. In the Meiji period. Shoza Kutani developed his own stlyle which became popular for it's painting of"Saishiki-kinrande" with all styles putting together and the works of his apprentices were exported to get a high position as Industrial Arts of Kutani. The saucer is 4 inches across and the lip on it is appx. a quarter inch. The cup is 3 inches wide at widest point and 1 and 7/8 inches tall.It is a flat footed cup. With d ecoration that depicts two small birds in flight around gilt gold Bamboo canes and leaves. The decoration is mainly on the front face of the cup but there are a few Bamboo leaves that droop from the rim area on the back face. A gilt gold line runs around the rim of the cup with two further gilt gold lines running around the base area. A single gilt gold line runs down the handle. The saucer has the same two small birds in flight and tall canes of Bamboo accompanied by their leaves. The word Kutani means Nine Valleys ... moreand is the name of an area and a village. Lovely cup and deep-well saucer set which I was told by a collector is from the late Meiji period(1868-1913) Kutani region. Another collector told me it's late 17th century. I cannot vouch for any of this information since I am not a collector of Asian antiques and can't read the mark. But it's being offered here for those who might be familiar with the mark or just want a very decorative cup and saucer set. The set is hand painted with flowers and birds.
