This Lot is for an estate sale and has been in the family for over 50 years. Design Sometsuke(blue and white porcelain)The tako-karakusa pattern is of Japanese origin. The branched curls of the 17th and 18th century tako-karakusa were derived from the from the curls among the leaves of the early lotus scrolls. Which were later changed to include more short"octopus pads" If you like the karakusa pattern, look for the Nagazara(longdish) also listed. The cups are all matching. The cup has the"three friends of winter" design in the center. Appears to be of the late 17th. Early 18th century. I purchased this intricately glazed hand painted imari tea cup at a dealer only antique auction just outside of Kyoto. It came from an estate which had pieces dating over 300 years back. This is an aka imari( multicolored) ceramic tea cup which dates to the mid Meiji era(c. 1890) The outside is designed with multi color glazed work with hand painted details of flowers. Melons, and a butterfly. Around the lower and inner rim there is a lattice pattern in cobalt blue. This style tea cup was commonly used in the late Edo to mid Meiji Eras(c. 1850- 1890) Being all hand painted it is most likely from the early to mid Meiji Era as by 1900 the use of transfer print became the vogue. Selling a pair of antique late Meiji period(c. 1900) Japanese handpainted Arita Imari porcelain tea cups. Each is hand painted in underglaze blue in an alternating design of Ho-o birds(Japanese Phoenix bird) and blossoms on white porcelain. The cups are footed and an overall hexagonal shape. They are in overall excellent antique condition. One of the cups has a very small old glaze pop on the rim of the cup as shown in the closeup of the pics. Although it can be difficult sometimes to decipher Japanese from Chinese porcelain in some instances. I believe these are Japanese based on the type of porcelain and the style of the birds. A small panel with diagonal strips, and a small panel which seems to be a landscape(looking through a window? Internal rim painted with a foliage pattern in blue and red and the bottom interior has a coiled dragon in blue. The footed cup is lobed(scalloped) with a stylized rim and has a Kanji four character Fuki Chosun mark. This cup can be used as a soba, tea, or sake cup. Very symbolic and nice gilt work that would have taken the Imari Artist many hours to produce. The inside upper rim and bottom is decorated in a dark blue. Sweet pair of Japanese Meiji-era Inban transfer ware blue and white soba choko cups. This type of Inban work was popular in the second half of the 19th century through about 1920. These date from sometime in that period. They're in great condition. Very clean, with no chips or cracks, though they have some minor glaze flaws typical of the firing conditions of this kind of work(see pictures 8 and 9) Each is in a different transfer ware pattern. I purchased them separately and in different years. They both measure 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" Lovely every-day ware from Japan a century ago.

In my opinion, the cup dates to the late Edo or Meiji period, circa 1850-1900. Hisatomi Yojibei Masatsune with his oldest son. Masayasu(1812- 1878) operated the foreign trade of the porcelain ware in the late Edo period. In 1842 the family was officially licensed by Saga Han. Nabeshima Naomasa(1815- 1871) who granted the family a trade name, Zoshuntei. This is an imari ceramic teacup which dates to about 1910(late Meiji) And is all hand thrown as well as hand painted with a round design on the inside(see enlarged pictures) It measures 3 1/4" across by 2" tall(8 x 5 cm) Having been in storage most of its life. With the exception of one small but noticeable chip(see picture 7) and hair line(see picture 8) it remains in very fine condition as seen in the enlarged pictures. For this dish a choko(cup) was used for holding a dipping sauce. An infinite variety of patterns were used to decorate the soba choko cups in sophisticated blue and white designs. Highly collectible. Today their uses have been extended to other purposes such as for ice cream, fruit, and various desserts or as tea cups.
