Japanese"Geisha Girl" or Lithophane Mark porcelain Tea Cup and Saucer Offered for sale is this vintage 1950’s miniature tea cup from the owner’s mother. The saucer shows Mount Fuji. A Japanese tea house and Pagoda. The cup repeats the scene with 2 small sailboats on a lake. There are no cracks. Chips or scratches that we could detect. The items are hand-painted and on the top of the handle is a small black line where the craftsperson didn’t quite cover the undercoat with gilding(see photo) Dimensions are: Saucer 3.75” Diameter. Cup 2.5” Diameter, total Hight 2” Below is what we found on the internet about this piece. This porcelain is well known and most often called"Geisha" or"Geisha girl" Porcelain. It is Japanese and my guess is that it is made at the Arita factory specifically for the Western market during ... morethe first decades of the 20 th Century up until the 1940's. Some sources indicate that porcelain with this mark could have been in production as late as in the 1960's. The inspiration for the Japanese"geisha girl" lithophane mark seems more than likely have come to Japan during their early contacts with the West around the turn of the 19th century. All kinds of decorative pieces. Probably mostly lanterns was made in this technique in Europe, with its popularity reaching its peak in the 1870's after which point they gradually went out of fashion. Originally. This technique seems to have been developed by the Koenigliche Porzellan Manufaktur(KPM) of Berlin in the 1820's and later patented in England, by Robert Griffith Jones in 1828. Up for auction/sale is a lithophane very delicate Japanese tea(demitasse size) cup and saucer. The set is used. And the gold trim around the rim of the cup has some wear. Please see the photos to assess the condition of both the cup and saucer. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. The cup is very dainty, and as you can see in the photos, translucent. The saucer is 4 1/4" in diameter. The cup is 2 1/4" tall, and a little over 2" in diameter. Together they weigh 2.8 oz. This lovely. Beautiful, and quality lithophane Geisha Lady sake cup measures 1 1/2" tall, 1 3/4" across the top rim in diameter, and 1 1/8" inches across the base of the cup in diameter. It is painted shaded gray and black background, with pink hues for accent, on fine white china. It has moriage raised blue and black squiggly, accent designs on it. The cup bottom has a defined Geisha Girl lithophane design(carved like) in the bottom that can be seen when held up to the light. The rim of the cup has a fine gold gilt band. Raised, piped, enamel creates the Dragon's scales, teeth, claws, wings and tail in grey, pastel powder blue and white with additional raised, piped enamel forming the clouds(that are mainly in pastel powder blue) and a gold, line running around the rim. The image on both cup and saucer shows a peacock and Peony flowers hand painted in gold. White and red colors. There is a secret image of a young geisha girl's face on the bottom of the cup and she smiles shyly when you hold the cup against the light. Lithophane was first invented in 1827. Offered for auction is this beautiful vintage porcelain demitasse cup and saucer made in Japan and appears to be in the Satsuma style with several faces on the bejeweled pieces. It is beautiful with raised beads and gold trim. Each piece is marked MADE IN JAPAN on the back. The cup measures approximately 1-7/8 inches tall and the diameter of the opening is about 1-15/16 and is free of any chips. Cracks or other damage. This is a Kutani kiln Sake cup and the exterior is decorated with hand painted images of a dancing man surrounded by the calligraphy of minute Japanese character letters. Called the Saiji-craft. The inscription next to the dancer reads"Tamura. Oda Seizan was credited to have established and perfected a special craft now known as the Saiji-craft of Kutani around ... more1911. Tamura Kinsei was trained by Seizan. Adding his own design and techniques. He had developed and made the Saiji-craft of Kutani to the level of sophistication today. Now the entire Tamuras are dedicated to this special craft of Kutani ware. There is also an image of a young geisha girl's face on the bottom of the cup and she smiles shyly when you hold the cup against the light. An etched artwork called Lithophane. DETAILS OF ITEM This is a mid century porcelain Dragonware lithophane cup and saucer with a photographic quality secret Geisha image at the bottom of the cup. The cup measures 2.13 inches tall by 4 inches in diameter excluding the handle and the saucer measures 5.5 inches in diameter. The image on both cup and saucer shows a flying brown dragon image amongst the lightening bolts in the blue sky. Raised Moriage highlights this design. The ... moreyoung geisha girl's face smiles shyly when you hold the cup against the light. Lithophane was first invented in 1827. Using the different thickness of the translucent bisque porcelain produces this remarkable three-dimensional image. The artist first carves the image into beeswax. The translucency of the wax allows the artist to see the result of this work. A plaster casting is taken from the wax mold then a fine porcelain paste is pressed into this mold. Lithophane coffee cups like this one were produced during the later 1940's through 1950's in Japan and the condition of this set is very good. What makes this set so unique is the high quality image of the lithophane that is a rare feature not often seen in these cups and saucers. Even her double eyelids and softness of her kimono can be seen on close view(see photos) There is some gold loss to the rim of the saucer and cup; otherwise. The rest of the condition is very good. Saucer is 5" dia. The cup& saucer are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The lithophane inside is of a beautiful geisha and can be seen very well in the light. I have 5 sets available.
