ANTIQUE 130 YR OLD MEIJI PINE PAGODA HAND PAINTED IMARI JAPANESE CERAMIC TEA CUP
From an estate sale in Japan. This is an antique Meiji era(c. 1880) hand thrown porcelain Japanese tea cup with a unique hand painted design of a scenic seaside pagoda scene. The gosu blue indicates that it could be as early as 1840. The gold highlighting was a final third firing as the rest of it was fired at a much lower heat. Its high temperature firings in a wood fired kiln gives it lasting strength and durability. When tapping the side of this cup it emits a high ring indicating that it was made from a refined clay and fired at length at a high temperature. This cup includes a design of a swallow on the inside(see pictures 6& 7) And its shape including dimpled sides was a much more difficult form to create, after it is thrown on a potter's wheel. Beautiful near perfect porcelain Satsuma cup. The pattern is Mother/Son according to the Geisha Girl Encyclopedia. The rim and face of the cup are in perfect condition with no chips or wear. The gold detail is spectacular. Signed. In Japanese, in gold over red on the bottom. There is a small chip-let in the foot of the cup that I didn't notice until I was investigating VERY closely. There is also a small hairline crack that does not go through and is also in the foot of the cup. These two small imperfections are photographed in the last photo. Japanese Antique tea cup and saucer - lobed, hand-painted iris - elaborate gilt
This tea cup and saucer are true artistry. Look at the last two photos to see the detail in the hand-painted irises. The addition of gold/gilt is VERY generous and was carefully applied amongst the detailed painting of the leaves and flowers. The paint is raised to the touch. Particularly for the large Japanese Iris blooms. A single butterfly is hidden among the blooms on both the cup and saucer This is truly an outstanding set. They were in a collection that was carefully used for display& decorative purposes. CONDITION: The cup has no chips. Cracks or crazing. The cup handle has two small spots where the gold has worn off. one is 1/16" x 1/8" and the other 1/16" x 1/16" There seems to be another 1/8" spot on the cup where the paint has worn off. It is difficult to see unless you use magnification. The plate ... morehas a 1/16" chip on the right lobe. It is the same color as the gold but I could feel the chip. Again it is hard to see. I can't tell if was chipped before the plate was painted or chipped after and gold added to obscure the chip. The plate might have some minor paint loss but again it is difficult to determine what is an artistic brush stroke and what has worn off even with magnification. Here is a lovely Japanese cup& saucer set. The saucer and inside of the cup are handpainted to depict Geisha and everyday life in Japan. The edges of both are scalloped and trimmed in gold and red. The set is made of porcelain and the hand painted detail work is exquisite. The saucer measures 5.25" The cup measures 2" high by 4" across. The outside of the cup has red flowers blossoms painted on it, 5 on one side. Four on the other side. The entire design is highlighted with gold. Makings on bottom in gold over red. This is a unique multi-color hand made Japanese coffee or tea cup. It is a light celadon green with panels of surrealistic hand painted flowers. A Japanese style artist's signature appears on the bottom. The cup is undamaged. As is typical of these pieces. There is a crackle in the glaze but it suggests age rather than decoration.
