This trunk has been authenticated by the curator of the Louis Vuitton exhibition in Paris through emails. It's the real deal! This size is a rare half steamer. Measuring 13.5 inches high. 35.5 in wide, and 19.5 inches in depth. This trunk is about 130 years old, has traveled the oceans, and shows it's wear. It does have some condition issues. Please look at the pictures carefully. The inside is covered in the original blue/white striped ticking, and it has it's original removable tray, very rare to find the tray with the trunk! Also original label from the Paris Exhibition with the dates 1867, 1868. You can see half a serial number on the top of label. There is also a Louis Vuitton stamp on the bottom of trunk. Antique Louis Vuitton Damier Steamer Trunk! 1888-1896! ULTRA RARE
This auction is for an ultra-rare. Antique Louis Vuitton Damier steamer trunk! This trunk was produced somewhere between 1888-1896(the time frame of the Damier pattern) The Damier patterned trunks are some of the rarest and most desirable of all the antique Louis Vuitton trunks! A majority of the canvas has been removed but the remaining canvas(on the inside areas of the lid) appears to be the more rare RED& WHITE on brown color combination as opposed to the light brown and dark brown patterns. The serial number on the lock reads 03845. The wood of the trunk is structurally sound and the clasps. Lock mechanism, and handles all seem to be in good shape. It is missing a couple of the brass rivets(please see pictures) Please also see the pictures for further condition and detail information regarding the trunk. Antique 1870's LOUIS VUITTON Rayee Steamer Trunk INCREDIBLY LOW SERIAL #6379
Brand- LOUIS VUITTON 100% Authentic Style- RAYEE Steamer Trunk(Rayee is French For Striped) Country of Origin- FRANCE Date Range- Louis Vuitton started using the striped canvas in 1872 until 1888 and considering the Low Serial# I would say it was made in the early 1870's Historic Serial Number- Amazing Very Early# 6379 as seen on the Original Sticker which was Never removed for any reason. Note: In January 2013 a striped trunk very similar to this one(but in better original condition. Sold in the UK for $58 K, w/ serial#13502 Interior has been Stripped of the original Canvas interior Although Some Remnants Remain. Including a swatch of the exterior Stripe canvas used for the outside, And Most if not all of the"Tacks" used for the tufting in the lid are still present. The interior would be very easy to restore, but I decided ... morenot to alter or add to it. The flat inside slide hinges are original w/ no issues. There is no moisture damage or odors present. Exterior- Wood/ Black Leather Trim/ Brass Hardware.I believe this was a Higher end model at the time as the hardware is All Brass vs. Iron and it was trimmed in Leather. Obviously the Original Rayee striped canvas has bee removed. However nothing was removed in order to do so, as you can still see canvas remnants under the slats and around hardware. A light coat of lacquer was applied to bring out the beauty of and to protect the wood. I would not think this would be a negative issue if it were to be restore to the original look, as the canvas would cover most of the wood and steel wool could gently remove the rest. Or otherwise it is a Beautiful show piece as it sits or a wonderful candidate for restoration Condition- This Trunk is Structurally Solid and I believe all of the hardware is original. Authentic Antique Louis Vuitton Trunk Rare Hat Trunk ? 1890's
Here we have an amazing AUTHENTIC trunk by Louis Vuitton. This is in good. Sound condition although the outside covering has deteriorated over the years. Every brass tack is marked Louis Vuitton the lock is marked Louis Vuitton even the wood across the bottom has Louis Vuitton embossed. This measures 24 inches by 15 inches tall. It is 11inches front to back. Amazingly it still retains its inside tray and the Louis Vuitton tag. The tray measures 22.5" by 9.5" and is 6.5" deep. The trunk weighs 19.5 pounds. I cannot find a serial number, perhaps someone can tell me where to look? It does have a key number which is 02077. The hardware is marked Btf SCDG PATENT 1 RUE SCRIBE PARIS, LOUIS VUITTON London 149 New Bond Street. Made in France. It is musty smelling( from age and the Northwest) and has many many stains but it is not wet ... moreand it is sturdy and maintains its integrity. It has a few stains in the bottom back corners( inside) which give a bit when you push on them, but again it doesn't appear too bad. I believe this is from the late 1800s and it was a hat trunk for women. not certain of this) The holders on top that held the leather handle strap are gone is but it is included and probably could be repaired. If you search Wikipedia for Louis Vuitton. Down the page a bit you will see an ad for" Malle Pour Chapeaux De Dames" this ad is from 1898 and this looks like my trunk, so that's where I came up with the date. You are bidding on an authentic Louis Vuitton steamer trunk. Serial# 40294, purchased per Louis Vuitton France, around 1892. All materials are original except for the lock. The top leather strap is missing. There are a few tears on the rear of the trunk. Truck dimensions are 36 inches wide x 20 inches deep x 21 inches high. The ends of the trunk are personalized by a red trefoil with"New York" written within and the initials"A.S.W. written below. The red trefoil is the regimental symbol of the Army of the Potomac, II Corps, 2nd Division. The trunk belonged to General Alexander Stewart Webb, Medal of Honor winner at Gettysburg, and later president of the City College of New York for 32 years. My grandfather was the caretaker of Ventfort Hall(an estate in Lenox. MA built by the Morgan family and later occupied by the Roscoe Bonsal ... morefamily) My grandmother was a domestic at Springlawn(a neighboring estate in Lenox, MA) built by John Alexandre. The bolts have the Louis Vuitton stamping as well. The label in the trunk dates it at 1889 and based on the known history of the Vuitton markings and style this date coincides. Please read below. Up for auction is a gorgeous square steamer trunk by Louis Vuitton. This model was made as a man's hat box around the year 1895 in Paris. I have verified the authenticity of this trunk with the Louis Vuitton flagship store in New York City. Fifth Avenue&57th St. where I am a long time registered customer. About three years ago I had a replacement key custom made by Louis Vuitton for this hatbox trunk. Replacement keys can only be ordered if one supplies several pictures of the trunk, answers questions as to how it came into one's belongings, then supplies the two numbers, first from the outside brass lock, then from the inside large LV paper label. Louis Vuitton takes this information and contacts their Paris store, where(incredibly enough! almost every trunk made since the year 1854 is recorded in their factory journals. Both ... morenumbers& pictures must be present, and they must match the old original records- then LV will supply the owner with an replacement key. The fee for this was I believe $50, and it took a few months. I find it absolutely astonishing, that those original written records still exist, and that this option to order a matching key exists! I see a lot of LV trunks in many sizes listed here on Ebay. But I notice that often they are in terrible condition. Either people seem to have stored them in drafty wet garages for decades, or they are amateurishly"restored" with electric tools- in doing so have scratched and blinded the gorgeous brass pieces and rivets. Sometimes even the wood bars have been sanded down electricly, giving them a cheap look. Antique LV trunks should not look"new" As they are 100/ 120 years old. The shine is rich but subtle, not a super bright modern horror shine, not a scratched surface without any life. You can also see this in the wonderful LV book"100 legendary trunks" I highly recommend this book for every LV enthusiast. It is extraordinarily beautifully made and has a wealth of LV history. It is stamped with initials and NY. I love that its from New York! 39" wide x 22" tall x 21" deep Approx 50lbs It is not perfect. Of course. One side has appears to have gotten wet.
