American Federal Period Red Painted Dovetailed Blanket Chest Probably Pennsylvania c. 1800-20. Yellow Pine Secondaries Untouched original condition Item# 130002FHK19 This piece is simply a treasure- an untouched and entirely original American Federal Period Antique Blanket Chest crafted during the first quarter of the 19th Century. Almost certainly in Pennsylvania. It features six-board construction. Every junction dovetailed for a permanent and flexible join throughout. The surface is dry and well patinated, almost certainly the original painted surface; the history of this antique blanket chest, how it was enjoyed and used over the last two hundred years, is tattooed in the stains, abrasions and oxidized scars across it's fine dark red painted finish. The top projects over the chest with applied molding along the facing edges. This ... morewith a scratched-channel giving form to the molding, the lid lifting over original square iron hinges with untouched screws. The iron lock and catch are still original to the chest, though the key has since been lost; a crescent is worn in the underside of the top where the lid of the till has scraped over the years, this same surface inscribed" Jennise A Bowman" Vanessa C. Roscoe" along with earlier mostly illegible inscriptions and numbers. Bringing harmony to the molded top is the opposing molding of the base. This stacked with a bead over rounded molding with a scratched-channel over the bracket feet. The form of the feet are appropriate and restrained, the scroll cut bracket form giving just subtle shape to an otherwise stoic form. The dovetailed feet are crafted such to showcase the most attractive perspective of the dovetail on the forward facing surfaces; the sides join the front board with half-blind dovetails, leaving the forward facing surface of the board unblemished by visible dovetailing. This unique item looks to be pencil signed on the inner lid as pictured which appears to read"Susanna" as the first name but I can not completely make out the last name which looks like"Snarel. This unique piece of American History features dovetailed construction, original red paint, bun feet, cast iron keyhole hardware, and inner flip top storage. The signature is on the top left of the underside of the lid and is as we acquired the item. This chest is in very good antique condition being structurally sound and sturdy with no major signs of damage. Image#17 and 19 show that the hardware was replaced at some point. We are not sure if it is old red paint just a red color to whatever non-paint finish is on it. The wood itself is heavy, looks like a walnut or mahogany. It has hand dovetailing on the corners. CONDITION: There has been a repair to the right edge of the lid which also has new hinges and is warped just a bit with the back edge being higher than the rest. Border around its bottom. This chest bears some bluish paint that probably once adorned it hence giving it a really nice distressed look. Top opens an closes properly. Even the bottom! Not sure which type of wood. Has a walnut richness& depth to it, or maybe cherry? In any case, these boards used to make this chest came from a very old, huge tree. The construction is gorgeous. Beautiful dovetailing, the classical legs look hand-turned. The moldings look like they may have been hand-planed, certainly the bottom shows signs of hand-planning. Lots of character to this chest. Feels like it could have been in an old home for generations. The surface shows plenty of living history& use, lending this chest a very rich, lived-in quality, as opposed to formal& untouchable as sometimes old chests can be) ... moreI've tried to show the aged patina and surfaces in the photos. Very charming in its worn qualities, but solid, expertly crafted to be used and enjoyed, its lasted for the ages and will last many more. Looks like the heroically wide board comprising the top shrank a bit width-wise(wood wasn't so kiln-dried in those days) So in this season the top is tight& rests just shy of level, perhaps the dry cold winter for a piece made south of here, a little trim would likely fix this permanently if you'd prefer, but it all looks great to me! It's an excellent size. Measuring about 24" high, almost 36" wide& nearly 18-1/2" deep. UPDATE REGARDING SHIPPING: This item should ship UPS. ANTIQUE DOVETAILED BUTTERNUT BLANKET CHEST. OUTSTANDING INCREDIBLY WIDE BOARDS, SIX-BOARD BOX! õ This is the most impressive American Hardwood Blanket Chest I've collected. The sides. Top& bottom are all SPECTACULAR single planks of, I believe Butternut, up to 20-24" across. The old Six-Board Box Blanket Chests were prized& prominent furnishings in the early American home. One of the most striking features and historical importance of these chests was that only the most perfect. Huge& straight trees were used, the goal being to have each side of the massive chest to be made of a single plank, and not joined from two or more boards. Only the very best trunks were made this way. Further down the food-chain of colonial& early American chests. The sides and top were spliced from two or more boards, or in the poorest ... moreof versions, the whole assemblage was covered in paint and a faux-finished'grain-painted' effect was applied, to make it appear as if the sides were single planks. The chests made with single boards on all six sides(hence the"6-Board Box' were crafted from planks cut from the monarchs of the Old Growth Forest. And often are representative of the oldest, most magnificent trees the lumber mill could find. This chest is made from the widest single boards I've seen in an American(or any western) Dovetailed Chest. The wood in this incredible chest is very hard. Clear& cut from an ancient, old-growth tree. The growth-rings are very tight. I've not counted them, but these old Walnuts& Butternuts could grow to hundreds of years old. This tree could have begun life around the time of Pocahontas. The condition of this chest appears superb. Excepting a couple of ring-stains on top(maybe a coffee mug or beer-bottle left for too long. Such marks can be removed, but I'm leaving that to the next custodian of this incredible piece, it doesn't constitute a defect to my eye) everything is tight, sound, solid& gorgeous. C. 1820-40; almost untouched condition Item# 1401ETP11PP This is a nearly untouched example of early Americana. An austere and unembellished blanket chest from the second quarter of the nineteenth-century. The top is a single solid plank of thick poplar with molding applied to the edges using cut iron nails, lifting over original cut and forged iron strap hinges(retaining original screws) to reveal a tidy interior with a small till on the left. An iron lock used to be attached to the inside, this and the clasp now absent. The clean lines of the front of the case are accentuated by the exposed dovetailing following from the sides through the original bracket feet. The ... moreentire surface retains a wonderfully patinated early red paint, almost certainly original. While many households do not have a need for blanket chests today. This beautiful PENNSYLVANIA blanket chest belonged to my great uncle. He was a huge collector of antiques! My husband and I love this piece. But we are such huge collectors ourselves we simply do not have the room for it anymore. I tried to find out the how, when and where of this piece, but was only able to get a little info. My grandfather(his brother) said he had it in his collection since he was married, so that was between 1930-1940. He loved estate sales and auctions, so I am assuming that is where he first purchased it. He pretty much didn't travel at all, so I would bet this came from an estate around 1930-1940 and in the area of Somerset, Westmoreland, Fayette or Bedford county PA. He lived in Indian Head PA-if you want to Google the area) My grandfather said it was always in his living room but you would never notice because ... morethey kept a blanket over it to protect it. This piece is mid to late 1800s at least.it may be earlier than that. My husband is a dairy farmer but also builds furniture on the side. He added the base. When we got this piece it had no base. But he tried to match it with the time period. He loves Soap Hollow furniture and tried to match it to that type of look. It also has a small section on the top/lid that has been repaired(early repair, not by my husband)pics 3& 11. The hinges were replaced at some point as you can see in pic 10-to the left of the hinge you can see the original nails used. It is old and not perfect.but it shouldn't be it is from the 1800s. A 19th century painted blanket chest. Dovetailed throughout, in need of restoration or display as is. The surface is very worn and dry and we believe it to be original. Working lock and key. The hinges, while old, are replacements; the lock we believe is original. There is significant damage/loss to the bun feet. Lots of dings, scratches, wear and tear. Repairs to the area around the hinges on the back of the piece. The piece measures approximately 15" tall(including 2" bun feet) 27" wide, and 14.25" deep. I bought this solid black walnut blanket chest 33 years ago. And now have no place to display it. It was built by a very talented craftsman, who also used dovetailed joints and some wooden pins. I was told that it was from the Civil War period. Item measures about 26" high, 19" wide, and 49" long. The finish hasn't been redone/ altered since before I bought it, so chest is a bit dull appearing. Chest has normal wear and some dings, etc. as to be expected. The value when I bought it was placed at least $500.00 and that is my price. You are bidding on a small chest or miniature blanket chest. Proportionally made just like the full size versions. It is made of Cherry wood. Which is rare. It is hand dovetailed, has brass hinges, and small brass screws. It has a brass key hole cover, nailed on with small brass nails. The base has its original glue blocks, and all visable nails are square, as they should be for something of this period. I bought this years ago off ebay from one of the best known sellers of smalls and boxes.the turbod. from York Pa. He believed it to be 18th century, but I think it is from the 1870's, or thereabouts. It may have its original finish, as I cannot find evidence of refinishing, I am not sure about this. I do not see any finish drips or stains on the box, anyplace. The finish looks correct for the period. It retains its original bracket feet, ... morehas an operational till, and a spot for a secret compartment below the till. Inside is clean, and this has been well cared for over time. The top has some scuffs, and stains.look closely at the pics. It has its original lock and keeper, but no key. MAGNIFICENT"MOTHER OF ALL BLANKET CHESTS" GIGANTIC DOVETAILED SIX-BOARD-BOX õ Actually I think this heroic trunk is an Indonesian Dowry Chest. Or Javanese Storage Trunk(or" Grobog" in Bahasa) To my knowledge. These were the most spectacular, titanic dovetailed chests made anywhere at any time. Each side of this chest is a single gigantic slab of Teak. Cut by hand from the giant Teak trees that once were plentiful in the region. This is the Real Deal, a now rare form, and a magnificent example. The work in this piece is astounding. Every incredibly wide board is hand-planed. Revealing the rich, dark ripple of the aged teak through the subtly faceted carving. The moldings are hand-planed into the boards. The magnificent dovetails seem almost large enough to be a log cabin, the carvings lovely and tasteful subtle coloration ... moreto the wood rich& warming. The iron work is tremendous, robust, aged, hand-forged& intense. And as was the tradition, it's on these really great, large, built-in solid teak wheels! The top slab measures an incredible nearly 25" wide by 36" long in a single slab. Overall height is about 36-1/2" There are two handy compartments inside. One the full height of the interior and one with space underneath. I've been a collector of dovetailed chests for many years& I've collected some absolute beauties. This one is about the most heroic single-slab six-board box I've seen. The Indonesian Grobog chests can be very ornately carved& painted with striking colors. Indonesia is known for its amazing tradition of woodworking and crafts. I like that this one is much more simple& plain than most. And that the aged wood is allowed to be the most prominent surface. Indonesian chests like this are getting very rare. There was a time back in the 1990's when great containers of Indonesian Antiques were being shipped over. 19th C Antique Pennsylvania Blanket Chest Trunk Early Red Paint Dovetailed
Up for you consideration is an early large sized blanket chest with bible till and original tulip shaped- bun feet circa 1820-1840. It measures roughly 44 1/2" Long by 18 3/4" Deep and stands 25" tall. It made from popular. With bread boards through tendons end, on top of chest and very finely hand-made dovetails(no nails) The original hardware(except key) are still present and working order. I believe the brass key cover and stencil were added during Victorian era to update trunk, if you look into keyhole there a layer of dust, that would indicate they were not recently done. The Bible box and interior are in exceptional clean condition. The chest is in very good condition with no splits cracks or hairlines, because it came from the"Candle Light Inn" Ronks, Lancaster County Pa Estate(they were careful on condition ... moreand no offensive or musty odors on inside. There is slight scratches to top of chest and some wear to edges, but all in all an exceptional fine example of rare large sized Pa Blanket Chest.
