American Federal Period Red Painted Dovetailed Blanket Chest Probably Pennsylvania c. 1800-20. Yellow Pine Secondaries Untouched original condition Item# 130002FHK19 This piece is simply a treasure- an untouched and entirely original American Federal Period Antique Blanket Chest crafted during the first quarter of the 19th Century. Almost certainly in Pennsylvania. It features six-board construction. Every junction dovetailed for a permanent and flexible join throughout. The surface is dry and well patinated, almost certainly the original painted surface; the history of this antique blanket chest, how it was enjoyed and used over the last two hundred years, is tattooed in the stains, abrasions and oxidized scars across it's fine dark red painted finish. The top projects over the chest with applied molding along the facing edges. This ... morewith a scratched-channel giving form to the molding, the lid lifting over original square iron hinges with untouched screws. The iron lock and catch are still original to the chest, though the key has since been lost; a crescent is worn in the underside of the top where the lid of the till has scraped over the years, this same surface inscribed" Jennise A Bowman" Vanessa C. Roscoe" along with earlier mostly illegible inscriptions and numbers. Bringing harmony to the molded top is the opposing molding of the base. This stacked with a bead over rounded molding with a scratched-channel over the bracket feet. The dovetailed feet are crafted such to showcase the most attractive perspective of the dovetail on the forward facing surfaces; the sides join the front board with half-blind dovetails, leaving the forward facing surface of the board unblemished by visible dovetailing. This sweet bit of Americana measures 20” tall x 17” wide x 9” deep and boast 4 molded drawers with dovetailed construction(front; square nail back) and thick hand chamfered drawer bottoms. The sides feature raised panels with compass corners and graceful cuts repeating the profile of the front skirt. It is primarily pine with tulip poplar back; some of the drawer bottoms are pine and others poplar and retains its original heavily distressed dark grain painted surface overall. The porcelain knobs on the top drawer are original; the rest are modern replacements. This is dove tailed and I think it was made around 1890 to 1900. The wood is pine and the size is 41 ½” long by 18” wide and it is 23 ½” high. This is in original condition and there are nicks from use and moving this from place to place. There is some areas that have the staining missing. Pennsylvania Dutch Dower / Blanket Chest Signed Samuel K Wagner Initials YPCC ?
I have had this for 18 years and never noticed it to be a Blanket/ Dower chest. It came from my Grandmother who was born in East Petersburg Pa and lived most of her life in and around Lancaster Pa. It though it was just a trunk she stored stuff in. It has had all the trim and feet removed and was repainted brown over the years. The current brown paint appears to be very old though. I never noticed it has initials on top/ lid. I can make out YPCC. The CC is heavily worn and may be incorrect. I am sure about the YP. It is Dovetailed on corners. The lid looks like it may have split at one time and 2 bats were fastened to it to keep it together. This was done a long time ago also because they now have heavy wear also. The underside of the lid has Samuel K Wagner written in pencil. It also has a few other pencil marks. It has a till box that had ... morea lid at one time but it is no longer with it. You can see the holes for mounting the lid as well as the wear marks where it wore on lid of chest. It has 4 holes in bottom that at one time had feet in them but are now filled with an unknown material. It has 2 handles on sides but 1 is broken. The bottom is very heavily worn with period square nail heads visible. The lid and bottom boards are solid 1 piece and are 17 7/8 inches wide. 1 inch thick and 36 inches long. The chest measures 17 7/8 inches tall, 36 inches in length and 17 3/4 inches wide. It has heavy wear and scratches from years of use. It has no lock but does have a latch type closure on lid. The 2 lid hinges appear correct and original. I am not sure but the initials on lid could possibly mean York Pennsylvania with the other 2 initials being the owners name. I am not sure. There also may be more painting under the brown paint although no other painting is visible. I do notice that under the broken side handle there is black paint that is possibly the original color. No other major issues to note. Possibly a great restoration project. Unfortunately my grandmother never told me where it came from so I don't know

WOW! I mean W.O.W. FRESH from an incredible estate this past weekend. This OLD(avid collectors) estate was packed with EARLY AMERICAN items-furniture. Boxes, chests, maps, ect. I snatched this baby up! This early Pennsylvania chest is gorgeous-all hand made-dovetailed construction with square nails. BEAUTIFUL original paint! Signed several times in several places on the bottom-I can only make one out for sure-Amanda Batz. If you google her, you will find right away an Amanda Batz who was born in Pennsylvania on May 1st, 1836. I don't know if this was passed down to her or painted by her? There are other names and possibly dates which, with a little more time and effort, could probably be made out and someone could probably figure out when and for whom and possibly by whom this was made. AMERICAN RECESSED PANEL PAINTED BLANKET CHEST Probably Lancaster or Montgomery County. Pennsylvania c. 1820-40 Item# 130110PZS26 This is an exceptional piece in untouched condition. The two board top is delightfully painted in a somewhat scrubbed brown on cream. Surrounded by an ogival molding affixed with a series of cut iron nails. It lifts on original steel hinges to reveal it's original untouched till and a spacious interior constructed using double-pinned tenon mortise construction with panels set into the mitered frame. The grain painted facade of the chest is highlighted with the recessed panels framed in cream molding, these with a delightful maroon wash that still allows the sharply ribbed grains to show through brilliantly. Identical to the front, the back of the chest is constructed with a recessed panel, the entire back with ... morea red painted wash. Resting over it's original ogee molded base, the case was crafted without feet, the underside remaining untouched and fully original. This is an absolute treasure for serious collectors of American Folk Art and period works from Pennsylvania. In untouched and very fine condition. This piece remains in an admirable state of preservation throughout. Measurements: 37 1/2" wide x 17 1/2" deep x 16 7/8" high Condition Report: Untouched worn original painted surface. Original untouched hardware(lock. Hinges, latch all original) no key available. String and eyehooks are probably later, though the eyehook on the lid is hand forged and possibly original. And original brasses, Pennsylvania, c.1790/1810, Provenance: Joseph Kindig, Jr. This compelling bureau has the advantages of(1) being 37 inches wide—which is on the smaller side—and(2) being composed of walnut—which is far less common than mahogany. It is quite tall. And with its highly figured serpentine front, makes a most elegant statement, and could almost be used to serve as a commode. All of this is raised on high French feet in perfect condition with no breaks. The walnut is solid and the drawer fronts are of a highly figured thick veneer of burled ... morewalnut, which is needed for stability. All of the drawer borders are line inlaid and retain original escutcheon inlay, probably all satinwood. The top and sides, which are solid, were beautifully selected for figure(see the top image below, which shows a beautifully clamshell-figured piece of walnut, 20 inches wide. Walnut doesn’t come in wide widths and large pieces are hard to come by, as opposed to maple and mahogany. This cabinetmaker, therefore, added a strip to the back on top and both sides to provide the depth required. It is of the same stock. Structurally. This is a beautiful antique hand painted chest or trunk. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers. The flower painting is in pretty good shape on the sides and on the top. The escutcheon is very unique. The trunk measures roughly 46 inches wide by 23 inches deep by 25 inches high. It has been passed down in my family for several generations. I can remember it always being in a guest bedroom in my grandparents home and they were art and antique collectors. I am in the process of downsizing and I have quite a few pieces to sell. I would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive in design. I do not have a key. Because of the lovely decorations and the writing of the name BERTA ELLINGS 1894 DATTER AAROEN I assume that it's a bride's box or maybe a dower box. A dower box is similar to a hope chest and were often made for girls when they were 8 or 10 years old to encourage them to fill it with their handwork in anticipation of the time they would marry and set up housekeeping. Datter is daughter in German. So I'm guessing that Aaroen could be her maiden name(in the case of a bride's chest) or possibly her mother's maiden name(in the case of a dower chest) The box portion measures about 37 1/2" by 16 1/2" and about 20 1/2 in. from floor to peak of lid. This beautiful PENNSYLVANIA blanket chest belonged to my great uncle. He was a huge collector of antiques! My husband and I love this piece. But we are such huge collectors ourselves we simply do not have the room for it anymore. I tried to find out the how, when and where of this piece, but was only able to get a little info. My grandfather(his brother) said he had it in his collection since he was married, so that was between 1930-1940. He loved estate sales and auctions, so I am assuming that is where he first purchased it. He pretty much didn't travel at all, so I would bet this came from an estate around 1930-1940 and in the area of Somerset, Westmoreland, Fayette or Bedford county PA. He lived in Indian Head PA-if you want to Google the area) My grandfather said it was always in his living room but you would never notice because ... morethey kept a blanket over it to protect it. Antique Hand Painted German Pennsylvania Dutch Chest Trunk Dowry Wedding Blanket
Beautiful Antique German Pennsylvania Hand Painted Trunk Chest For sale is a beautiful antique hand painted chest or trunk. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers. The painting appears to be on top of a gesso or tempera of sorts. The flower painting is very nice and in pretty good shape on the sides but worn on the top. The escutcheon is very unique. The trunk measures roughly 46.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches deep by 23.5 inches high. It shows a good deal of age because it is very old. I am not certain but would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. It is possible that it is older since the joints and hardware are similar to chests claiming to be early to mid 1700s. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive in design. I do not have a key. The iron hinges could use a little straightening. There are square ... moreand round nails holding it together. Some of the nails for the hinges have been replaced with screws. The paint is cracked and peeling and missing and dirty. The interior of the trunk shows mostly red. The lid has a label and a picture of cupids. The label in in German but I don't think it has anything to do with the origin or maker of the trunk. There is a small lidded storage compartment on the left side. The ball feet appear to be correct. One toward the back shows deterioration. There are some random areas that show past termite activity or worm holes. I am not sure. The boards are solid. Though. This trunk was just removed from a Los Angeles storage unit and needs a very thorough cleaning. I am not an expert on such pieces and welcome any details people might be able to add. Here a fine mid 19th century Pennsylvania blanket chest. Perhaps it was a wedding present for Marion and Leroy. It is constructed of pine with all surfaces painted with the exception of the inside and bottom. It is a very nice display size with outside measurements of 36" wide. 22" tall and 18" deep. The folk painted surfaces have some wear as shown and there is fine crazing/ oxidation attributable to the age. Very fine shape for 164 years old. Nice forged strap hinges. I believe the 2 pieces of wood to reinforce the underside of the top were been added in the 20th century. It is very solid throughout. Pennsylvania Signed Pine Miniature Chest c. 1860s With Feathered Painting
Pennsylvania c. 1860s primitive pine box or miniature chest with hinged lid. 20W. 9H and 11D. Beautifully hand feathered painted. The lid is one piece and shows beautiful 1800s saw marks shown in the photos. This box was probably hand painted by Sarahann Helt as a child and used by her as her treasure chest. The box was purchased by my father in Lancaster County Pennsylvania about 1950 and was given to me by my father. The name Sarahann Helt is painted on the back side of the box in beautiful large 1800s script. Two of the photos show all or part on the name. Sarahann Helt was born in Reed Station. Pennsylvania, in 1865 and died in 1946. She was married to Edward Hoffman and they had at least one child, Mathias Daniel Hoffman(1896-1963) Mathias had three children. Up consideration is a mid 19th Century 6 board pine Blanket Box. The piece measures 17 1/2 inches deep by 24 3/4 inches high with a length of 42 1/2 inches long. This chest is dated 1847 and signed R. Wiggins. This type of work or paint was added to Antiques in the early 60's when there suddenly became a renewed interest in American Antiques. It is signed R. Wiggins in the lower left cartouche. If one looks closely on the front one can see the original paint underneath with some fancy scrolling lettering. Please see photos. The box is clean. Retaining originality in every aspect of the facade and structure- most importantly, the delightful scrolled front feet are untouched and entirely original to the case. The grain painted surface is a kaleidoscope of chaotic but nearly symmetrical pigment, mostly blends of ochre, the resulting effect highly understated, only fully developing in the eye after looking upon the surfaces for a period of time. It is a deeply patinated surface, the whole full of character and craquelure amidst the oxidized chips, dings and abrasions. Most of the chest is crafted of large planks of Yellow Pine, ... morethese dovetailed along the sides and back. The till lid is Yellow Poplar and the feet are undetermined. The back feet are just as magnetic as the front, the form in an overall taper embellished by scratch-beading in the swell and relieved by swelling rings over the ball toes. They were crafted with a slight lift over the front feet, giving the entire chest the slightest"downward" slant- the effect of this is rather ingenious, relieving the squareness of the profile by giving a more full view of the top. The top lifts over"Baldwin" hinges, one of the most active and well respected hinge foundries in the UK during the 19th century. A truly remarkable find. Particularly in it's simply stunning untouched condition. OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL AS FOUND AMERICAN FOLK ART PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH PAINTED BLANKET CHEST FRONT DATED 1849This is one of the best all original painted Pennsylvania Dutch blanket chests I have seen. It was found in Pennsylvania and salvaged from a destroyed blanket chest. The colors are fantastic. The background is a blue green and on each end there are painted lilies in orange/red with the same design in the center. They may be tulips but I am not sure. There are two framed panels with moldings around the perimeter(some of the molding is chipped) These have a goldenrod colored background and several plants and two flower pots all in several colors of green. Red, orange, etc. There is NO OVERPAINTING at all on this complete panel. This chest front contains a metal lock plate as well as the complete lock on the back side. The front is dated 1849(which has faded a lot but can still be read) This is an unbelievably rare painted panel piece of the Pennsylvania Dutch. If you are a folk art collector you have to have this for your collection! It can be hung just like a painting on the wall with all of its vibrant painted colors. The ends still retain the dovetail cuts with the right side still having the cutoff pieces of the side which could be poked out and removed. The back side is unpainted and made of two pine boards, The size is 7/8" x 19 3/4" x 56" Please look at all the photos carefully to asses the condition. This is an original blanket chest from the Amish country of Berks County Pennsylvania. I got it from an old man who was breaking up his home and down sizing. He said it belonged to his grandmother and he was in his 70's. It is in great condition with crackle paint. Quarter round around the lid. The lid hinges are perfect, the drawers tight and clean. It is 41 inches tall. 20 inches wide, 43 inches long. The drawers are 6 3/4" tall and 8" tall by 17" wide by 39" long. The blanket space is 15" deep, 17" wide and 39" long.

AMERICAN GREEN PAINTED PINE BLANKET CHEST. PENNSYLVANIA 19th Century with Dovetailed Feet Signed on bottom"Jonas Cros.y" and inscribed in lid"Amelia Saltsmon" Item# 1409AIU01P This is a wonderful early 19th Century painted blanket chest from Southeastern Pennsylvania. The surface dry and worn with an early green paint. The surface is plain and undisturbed with embellishment, the whole being deeply oxidized and full of charming wear. The construction is standard and uncomplicated, the exterior of the case crafted of six broad planks of Eastern White Pine, the sides and bottom joined with exposed dovetail construction. The base is affixed with a series of small pegs and the feet are delicate little brackets with exposed dovetailing to the front and sides. Likewise, the molding around the top is affixed with pegs set at regular ... moreintervals, the lid lifting on original wrought iron strap hinges affixed with mostly original screws. The original steel lock and catch survive in the case, though no key is available. The till is somewhat unique, the outer edge lifting in grooves on either side to reveal a compartment below the till- the lifting wall is not unusual, but this usually reveals drawers instead of this tidy compartment. The bottom of the case is inscribed in a now faded ink"Jonas Cros.y" the J and the C both being quite accomplished with extensive swirling. This form is easily incorporated into modern decor in so many ways. Including as a coffee table, an entertainment stand beneath a flat screen, while also working wonderfully in front of a period bed as it was intended. It is a striking piece that will certainly be cherished in your home for a lifetime. The piece is made of a solid and heavy hard wood(I cannot make out what kind of wood) The drawers have dovetail construction with the inside wood being pine. MEASUREMENTS: The blanket chest measures 38 inches tall 40 inches wide and 18-1/2 inches deep. LET’S TALK CONDITION: Fine antique condition with a wonderful patina. American Federal Painted Antique Blanket Chest, Pennsylvania, Early 19th Century
FINE AMERICAN FEDERAL PAINTED BLANKET CHEST ON FLARED FRENCH FEET Pennsylvania. C. Second Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 410SLU18 A very striking use of the flared foot in the blanket chest. The taste for Neoclassical austerity quickly translated into even the most functional of rural furnishings in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. These developments are clear in the angular reeded molding around the base, the softened scrolling of the returns around the feet and the simple escutcheon employed at the lock. Beyond these design changes, the structure of the chest remains unchanged from the late eighteenth-century form- the projecting molding around the top is affixed on a tongue-in-groove with an even series of wooden pins driven into the top, this raising on it's original rectangular cast iron hinges. The case leaves all ... moredovetailing along the front, sides and back exposed- the dovetails were considered a mark of excellent craftsmanship and were a proud part of the form, something to be displayed and considered by the customer of the day. The dovetailing continues in the back of the case through the rear foot supports, these affixed with large and carefully cut dovetails to the facings, all feet also supported with the typical bevelled horizontal blocking and large vertical interior blocks(two replaced, one absent, one original) Retaining it's original burgundy red painted surface. This chest is an absolute treasure of a find- the state of preservation throughout is remarkable with only the most minor of touch ups, the whole being free of any restoration after two hundred years of use. It was clearly cherished by it's owners. The bottom of the interior has a large scrolled inscription that is illegible to us, a more tidy but still illegible inscription beside the lock(not pictured) For any serious collector of Americana. Superbly flame decorated front and side panels, with green trim. Nice deep red and black colour. Rust red painted turned feet mounted on the corners. All pine dovetailed construction. Through dovetails on the front, and blind dovetails on the back. The blind dovetails on the back is a unusual feature, which requires more cabinetmaking skill than the standard dovetail. Super clean interior. With the original iron lock, key, hinges and brass escutcheon. This blanket chest is a wonderful size. 44" wide, 24" tall, 21" deep. Condition: Very fine clean condition. Minor dings and scratches. The right side lid back edge. Up for you consideration is an early large sized blanket chest with bible till and original tulip shaped- bun feet circa 1820-1840. It measures roughly 44 1/2" Long by 18 3/4" Deep and stands 25" tall. It made from popular. With bread boards through tendons end, on top of chest and very finely hand-made dovetails(no nails) The original hardware(except key) are still present and working order. I believe the brass key cover and stencil were added during Victorian era to update trunk, if you look into keyhole there a layer of dust, that would indicate they were not recently done. The Bible box and interior are in exceptional clean condition.
