Offered for bids is an early 19th century Sheraton chest of drawers measuring 42 ½” high& 40” wide. Top measures 40 ½” wide& is 19 ¾“ deep with an appropriate rear over hang. Four graduated drawers with matching flame veneered fronts. I suspect this might be walnut but may also be a brown mahogany. Bought out of Reading PA. All drawers are dovetailed& beaded. The drawers runners are worn but run smoothly. There is some small chipping to the beading. One of the balls of the right front foot has a chip. Retains its locks. Brasses are replacements. Evidence of other pulls. The chest has been refinished at least once. There are some cross grain scratches on the sides from previous stripping. It is a rare design e4specially since most of us arn't tall enough to see inside the top row of drawers. Each row consists of either three smaller drawers across, or one large drawer. The entire piece of furniture is made up of two sections, the top and the bottom. The top of the piece fits into the bottom without needing any type of hardware to attach them togather. About mis section there is a flat rather thin board which pulls out like one of the drawers, but is intended to act as a folding table. Also there is a very unique large drawer just above that folding one which offers four smaller drawers inside and also four cubby holes each with a compartment just under these little drawers. The entire piece is handmade from frame to finish The workmanship of the day was impeccable and the vaneering composition and application is completely without compare Each drawer is trimmed around the perimetor with a light maple of about a 1/2 inch all around. The chest is roughly two hundred and twenty years old. And I have to underscore just how stable and functional the piece is still. This is not a piece that one has to just look at, this is a full service, everyday working chest that still has many many years of service left in her. Up for bid is an antique wood and brass box. I'm not an expert but from what I could gather it appears to date from the 17th or 18th Century. It may have been used as a ship captain's chest or strong box or a writing/Bible box. It has a number of internal compartments including one that locked. There is also one that looks like it would have held pen quills. The wood is quite dark and very hard and dense and the brass is hand wrought. It measures about 16 1/2" long x 10 1/2" deep x 4 1/4" tall and is very heavy. I have included a lot of pictures but please feel free to ask for more and ask any questions. This is a walnut Sheraton period miniature or child's chest. It is handmade exhibiting early nailed construction drawers. It has pine drawer bottoms and back. The primary wood is walnut and the secondary wood is pine. Very nice inlaid false key holes that appear to be maple. It is likely from the Sheraton or Empire period. It measures 16" by 16" by 7" It is an absolute knockout when you see it in person. Pictures in no way do it justice. It is missing both end pieces for the top. Small Walnut Victorian Chest of Drawers(not a commode or washstand) It has been professionally refinished. It is 29" tall. 25.25" wide and 18" deep. One of the things that is so unique about this chest is that it is finished walnut on all four sides. It could easily be used as a side table that sat away from the wall as it is beautiful on all 4 sides as seen in the pics. Would look great by a Wingback or Sofa. Even the bottom! Not sure which type of wood. Has a walnut richness& depth to it, or maybe cherry? In any case, these boards used to make this chest came from a very old, huge tree. The construction is gorgeous. Beautiful dovetailing, the classical legs look hand-turned. The moldings look like they may have been hand-planed, certainly the bottom shows signs of hand-planning. Lots of character to this chest. Feels like it could have been in an old home for generations. The surface shows plenty of living history& use, lending this chest a very rich, lived-in quality, as opposed to formal& untouchable as sometimes old chests can be) ... moreI've tried to show the aged patina and surfaces in the photos. Very charming in its worn qualities, but solid, expertly crafted to be used and enjoyed, its lasted for the ages and will last many more. Looks like the heroically wide board comprising the top shrank a bit width-wise(wood wasn't so kiln-dried in those days) So in this season the top is tight& rests just shy of level, perhaps the dry cold winter for a piece made south of here, a little trim would likely fix this permanently if you'd prefer, but it all looks great to me! It's an excellent size. Measuring about 24" high, almost 36" wide& nearly 18-1/2" deep. UPDATE REGARDING SHIPPING: This item should ship UPS. This sweet 19th century lingerie or ladies dressing chest also has the patented date on the hardware on the back of"June 23. 1891" This chest features a tall slim design perfect for about any size space and offers storage space with its two smaller drawers, bonnet cabinet and three larger drawers all with period dove-tailed ends. The original beveled mirror swivels and is attached by its original brass hardware between the carved mirror supports. The mirror does show silver loss on the right side which is common in antique mirrors and doesn't warrant replacing in my opinion. The solid brass Victorian pulls ... moreappear to have been replaced at some point in time; but compliment the piece beautifully. The key does work all the locks on the drawers but the lock on the bonnet door doesn't work, there is a small piece of the applied carving missing on the bonnet door. These Victorian lingerie chests are not easily found and this one offers elegance and style while also being a fabulous storage piece for lingerie, scarfs or accessories. The walnut is beautiful and the secondary popular is what you would expect in a very early dresser, the bottom of the draws are back cut to fit very early technique. The primary wood and veneers appear to be walnut or a similar hardwood with what appear to be oak and pine/poplar secondary woods. Dimensions: 12.25" high x 17" wide x 9.75" deep. Weight: 11 lbs. This was really a great find.a turn of the century Late Ottoman Turkish or Middle Eastern inlaid with mother of pearl walnut chest or dowry or blanket box. The pattern involves stars and other geometric shapes and some carvings that resemble birds and it is in very good condition. Patina is beautiful and finish is original. The base is an interesting combination of incised lines and inlaid mother of pearl stars on a reticulated base. It is all hand dovetailed. Height = 19 5/8" Length = 33 5/8" Depth = 16 5/8" Add a piece of glass to the top and have the perfect coffee or even side table. These old antique inlaid mother of pearl chests and tables and trunks are very flexible as they can be added to man different decors. It would look fantastic in an a room with off white colors as it would really pop! I bought this solid black walnut blanket chest 33 years ago. And now have no place to display it. It was built by a very talented craftsman, who also used dovetailed joints and some wooden pins. I was told that it was from the Civil War period. Item measures about 26" high, 19" wide, and 49" long. The finish hasn't been redone/ altered since before I bought it, so chest is a bit dull appearing. Chest has normal wear and some dings, etc. as to be expected. The value when I bought it was placed at least $500.00 and that is my price. This is a handsome solid walnut chest from about the 1870s. It has the first manufactured machine joinery on the drawers-the round dowel- as pictured. The chest is thick. Solid walnut and has three locking drawers over two large drawers. The gold leafing was added later and is not original to the piece. The pulls(handles) are original and lovely. There are cast iron casters on the bottom. It measures 48" wide, 22 1/2" deep, and 32" high. I purchased this from a lady over 20 years ago and at that time I knew that it was an expensive and rare piece. It was in my daughters bedroom for years and when she grew up and moved out.
