Vintage, casement window stays salvaged from the windows of a former cream production plant(see last photos) in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The plant was built during the 1890's, however, these most likely replaced the originals sometime during the middle of the previous century. Each stay is made of solid steel. And was originally brass plated. Much of the plating wore off over the years leaving them with a nice, distressed finish. The amount of plating varies from part to part(see"Group photos" to compare) If you are not familiar with this type of hardware. It keeps the window open at a specified distance from the sill. When you wish to open the window, loosen the knob by simply turning it in a counter clockwise direction. Open the window as far as you like, and once you wish to lock it in place, simply turn the knob clockwise until can't turn anymore. This will prevent wind from moving the window. At the point of salvage. The stays were painted, dirty, and rusty(see"Prior to restoration" photo) Since then, we've spent hours removing the paint, cleaning the dirt and rust from the outside of each stay, and greasing them to facilitate their movement. Antique SOLID CAST BRASS SASH LOCK 3 PIECES Here are one and one-half antique window locks. Hopefully you can use all these pieces. The paint can be soaked off easily with stripper leaving a shiny brass finish. Or it can be left on for antiquing. They are all made of a heavy duty cast brass except for the steel bolt. Steel washer and steel springs. The mounting holes are set on 2 1/8" centers. Condition: These pieces are in very good working condition. They are still covered with an original white paint. 5 Antique 1872 Eastlake Cast Iron Window Latch Sash Lock Hardware Stripped Bare
Up for auction is a set of 5 antique 1872 Easlake Victorian window latch locks plus one part. These have all been stripped to bare metal and lightly sprayed with lacquer to inhibit rust. Absolutely not reproductions! These had about 6 layers of paint. A bit of work got these to this point. Each measures 2 1/4" wide x 2" deep. Nice Eastlake design on the latch. These close by rotating the latch on the arch of the second half. It locks and squeezes the windows together to"seal" drafts. Three of these have the spring steel that allows you to keep pressure. Two are missing the spring steel. This is an easy fix by just cutting a small piece of spring steel and squeezing it into place. These still function without but work better with. As a vintage and antique hardware nerd. I am really not even sure how to describe these, I just know that I love them! It seems that they were originally designed to be used to latch a casement type window. They are brass with black coated handles. The black substance appears to be rubber. But I can't really tell, it is hard and shiny almost like bakelite or some form of heavy rubberized plastic. The end forms a hook that would keep a brass bar from being raised on an antique casement window. I also think that it could be used as a door latch. Or something to keep a chest or antique type freezer closed. Please note that one is left facing and one is right facing if they are both to be latched facing downward. Very cool and unusual window sash lock. They are spring loaded. Lever is pulled to release. The 3 barrel design would make a secure lock. Must of had keepers originally but will work without. Antique 1800's Hardware Cast Iron Window Sash Lock Latch only, Pat May 29 88
This is a single vintage antique cast iron window latch with a Patent date of May 29. 1888. It has an ornate design, which is mostly hidden by paint. It seems to work well, with the lever& latch moving 90 degrees together and then the lever only rotates another 90 degrees to sung the latch. The screw mount holes are spaced at 1 ¾” The reach from the center line of the mount holes to closed latch is 1” There is not a catch included with this latch. On the inside bottom.
