Unusual Old Glass Lightning Rod Topper. Orange Pendant - Lightning Ball
Now this is a very interesting glass lightning rod topper in bright. Transparent orange that has spent the last 25 years or so inside as part of a local store display. This finial. Or pendant, or topper is an unusual bright orange color, sort of a mix between orange and amber. The finish appears to be applied to the glass, not mixed into it, but it is in good condition and judging by the thickness and imperfections in the glass itself, I am pretty sure this is a fairly old piece. This is a vintage piece that came out of my grandparents estate. He was a lightning rod installer from roughly 1940-1980. I'm not certain how old this piece is. But I would guess Pre-1970. This great looking star burst brass lightning rod topper has it's original patina. I could find no makers mark. But these are not seen anymore and I think it dates back to the late 1800's. WEATHER VANE/ FLAGPOLE TOPPER: Antique Eagle. Gilded Metals, 17" Tall x 11" Wide If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a beautifully modeled and cast antique Eagle made from a metal which I cannot identify except to say that it is non-ferric. The ball is gilded copper. The gilding was applied over a heavy coat of mustard colored sizing which was sometimes used on objects meant for outdoors so that when the gilding started to wear. It wouldn't be so obvious. Much of the gilding and some of the yellow undercoat has worn away from exposure to the elements. I bought this Eagle in New Hampshire more than twenty years ago in a shop along Route 401 that runs between Concord and Portsmouth. It used to be called"Antique Alley" as there were dozens of fine antique ... morestores along the way. I haven't been back in a long time. But the last time I made that run, there were many fewer stores than there used to be. The man from whom I bought this Eagle told me he thought it was part of an old Weather Vane. Maybe. But I don't think so. It looks me as if it may have been meant to go on top of a flag pole. Except that it is much too finely modeled. The feathers are all beautifully articulated and the wings are differentiated from each other. The left wing is raised slightly higher and the tips of its end feathers are more curved than those of the right wing. If it was meant for a flag pole, it must have been a special one. Or it could have been part of some other kind monument which would have been visible at a much closer range than a flag pole. Frankly, I don't really know. But I do know that it is a beautiful thing. On his wooden stand. This Eagle measures 17 1/4 inches tall. The Eagle and the ball are 10 1/2 inches tall. From wingtip to wingtip, he is 11 1/4 inches wide and from his beak to the tip of his tail feathers, he is 6 1/8 inches long. Vintage cast iron Pheasant weathervane topper in very good condition. It measures 29" long and 13" tall and the arrow is 3/4" wide. Where is sits on a pole is a1/4" opening. It weighs about 3 pounds. Not sure how old it is. The pheasant is held on with 2 screws into the arrow I do not know much about weathervanes or weathervane tops, so please look at pictures and bid accordingly. 3 Copper Twist Lightning Rod Weathervane Pennsylvania Barn Acorn 5 Spike Topper
Fresh from the roof of an early Pennsylvania barn. That has collapsed under the weight of this winter's snow, are the three lightning rods with weathervane. They are made of copper, brass, and iron, with porcelain insulators(one insulator is missing, one is broken) The lightning rods stand approx. 6' tall, and the weathervane arrow is 32" long(animal piece is missing) The twisted center pieces look to be copper-covered iron(some copper is peeling/damaged, see photos) topped with what I believe are solid brass acorn pieces, and the five spikes look to be copper(one has a few bent spikes from the collapse) The glass/ceramic balls are missing, but the ring-caps are still present(lots of balls available here on eBay) The three-legged iron mounting brackets are fair for their age; rusty and pitted, all mounting feet and insulator ... morebrackets are present. One clip/clamp at the base of center rod, where cable would connect, is broken(middle of last photo) These three rods have gone through many rough years atop that barn.fortunately they still exist and can be restored or displayed as is. Very nice and super rare Electra"E" brass lightning rod topper/finial. In the eleven point starburst. Crown point pattern. Measures 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide. With the original attached copper shaft it measures a total length of 10.5 inches. Condition: original aged green tint patina. also has what looks to be some of the original shiny silver nickel plating on the star. Could probably be polished nicely. Several of the tips have slight bends that are easily straightened. Otherwise no bends as seen in the pictures. Does have some pitting along"spear" part below starburst. Copper pipe does have small split where it connects to finial(note these are two pieces. Most do not have original crimped shaft) End of copper shaft is uneven.
