WEATHER VANE: Antique Butterfly w/ Directionals& Ball. Gilded Iron,21.24"x18.5" If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a very charming Weather Vane which I purchased years ago in New Hampshire near Concord. It features a Butterfly seen n profile with his wings up. The Butterfly. The directionals and ball are all made out of cast iron and gilded over what looks to me like a grey green primer coat. Some of the gilding has worn away, but no rust has appeared on the iron elements. When I mounted this Butterfly I used a new steel rod and a collar to hold the ball in place. These I painted black. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Butterfly is 21 1/4 inches tall and 18 1/5 inches wide. The Butterfly himself is 12 1/2 inches long and 8 1/4 inches tall. The horizontal ... moreelement which acts as the arrow is 18 1/2 inches long and the directionals are 11 1/2 inches long. There is no damage to this Weather Vane. And, on the whole, this Butterfly is in pretty good shape. He still turns on his supporting rod and has a very cheerful aspect. Lot 5 Very Old Antique White Milk Glass Lightning Rod Balls Excellent Condition
Up for bid are a group of 5 vintage milk glass lightning rod balls. All 5 are free of chips or cracks. And all 5 are guaranteed OLD AND ORIGINAL, and not reproductions of any kind(we dug them ourselves out of a basement, and though we could not find the rod, the owner remembered there being one in the past. Each will benefit from a gentle cleaning, as we wiped a small area of that brown stuff around the rims, and it came off fairly easily. As always, we're leaving them as-is, so if you like them basement-fresh, you will be very happy(otherwise, expect to spend 5 minutes or so for clean-up) Again, this auction is for ALL 5 listed balls. Weather Vane: Antique Rooster w Directionals. Painted Iron. 23.5" Tall x 20" wide If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a charming Weather Vane featuring a Rooster and an interesting arrow which I picked up years ago near Salisbury. Maryland, which is the headquarters for Tyson's Chicken. All around there is serious chicken raising country. This Rooster seems to have had several coats of paint during his long lifetime. The last one being red. He is made from cut out iron sheeting. The Rooster and his arrow are one piece. Rather than being commercially produced, I tend to think that this Rooster was a one off produced by a very talented metal worker. I have never seen an arrow quite like his, with its wavy top and tulip shapes used for both the fletchings and the ... morepoint. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Rooster is 23 1/2 inches tall and 20 inches long. The Rooster himself is 8 1/4 inches tall and 7 1/4 inches from his breast to the back of his tail feathers. The arrow is 20 inches long, and the directionals are 15 1/4 inches long. Some of the paint is beginning to flake on the bottom of the ordinals. But other than that, this Rooster is in pretty good shape and still turns freely on his supporting rod. The photos give an exellent idea of the charm and cheerfullness of this Rooster Weather Vane. Very early hollow copper weathervane with wonderful craftsman detail and natural patina as shown in the pictures. Hand-tooled and soldered. This piece was used for many decades on a local New England barn. Measures about 23 1/2" long(arrow) with 16 1/2" long rooster. Rooster stands 19" tall. WEATHER VANE: Antique Eagle Rampant. Gilded Iron& Copper. Late 1900's, 30.5"Tall x 24" Wide If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a very interesting and vigorous Weather Vane topper I bought years ago near Nashua. New Hampshire. It features an Eagle Rampant; that is, an Eagle in the attack position. It is a peculiarly American design and one which has been used in times of war. I believe this Eagle dates form the late 1800's. The previous owner thought he dated from the early 1800's; I think he is a little later. But I may be mistaken. A similar design sold recently by one of the large auction houses in New York. The body of our Eagle is made of thick sheet iron; the top spike and ball are copper. The body of the Eagle is bolted to a hollow supporting ... morerod which I believe is brass. The whole figure has been gilded. There appear to be some traces of an undercoat of a mustard color which was sometimes used on these older vanes so that when the gilding started to wear it would not be so obvious when viewed from the ground. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Eagle is 30 1/2 inches tall and 24 inches wide. The Eagle himself is 19 1/4 inches tall from his talons to the top of his wings and 24 inches long from the point of his beak to the back of his tail feathers. The gilding is worn and a few of the small points of the tail feathers are slightly bent. But other than this, the Eagle is in pretty good shape. The bolts are still strong and secure and there are no structural issues. The photos give an excellent idea of this example of a particularly American design for a Weather Vane. Weather Vane: Antique High-Stepping Horse, Painted Iron, 33" Tall x 31.5" Wide
Weather Vane: Antique High-Stepping Horse, Painted Iron. 33" Tall x 31.5" Wide This is a really handsome Weather Vane featuring a high-stepping horse. I acquired him on a visit to South Dakota to see a friend with whom I was at university. The Horse and his Arrow are both made of heavy gage iron and seem to have several coats of paint. He is quite large and impressive. And it is a little difficult to make out his complicated patina with the different layers of paint. I think you can see this best in the details of the Horse's head and tail. As he stands now on his wooden stand. He is 33 inches tall and 30 1/2 inches wide. The Horse himself is 18 3/4 inches tall from his hooves to the top of his ears, and 24 inches long from the front of his raised leg to the tip of his flying tail. The arrow is 31 1/2 inches long, and is made ... moreof quarter inch iron. On one side he has a heavy strap support which is bolted on. And on the other side he has two sturdy holders for his support rod. They are also bolted. And both the holders and support strap are made of iron. The support rod was with the Horse when I first met hm, but I do not think he is as old as the Horse. I added the bit of hollow black steel and a copper footing at the bottom of the support rod to give the figure more visual stability. And I made the wooden stand from a piece of old beam when our barn home was reconstructed. This horse has always seemed to me to have both a noble and very cheerful feeling about him. With his high-stepping, his flying tail and his grin, which is still visible on one side. The other side seems to have suffered more wear and the smile has all but disappeared there. I am almost positive that this Horse is the work of some local craftsman. Rather than a mass producted piece. And my best guess is that he probably dates to the early years of the last century. I particualry enjoy the lyrically abstract treatment of his mane and terrific tail. The unusual double curl at the end of the arrow, where the fletchings would otherwis

Antique Appaloosa Horse Weathervane Up for consideration is a tall. Over 26" old, all aluminum, weathervane, featuring an Appaloosa horse on a the arrow directional. The arrow tail is complete with one bullet hole through the lower half of the feather portion of the arrow. The metal is all pretty straight, but not perfectly straight. All of the vane has been recently painted, with the exception of the arrow. The base has a screw like bottom. The arrow is 21 1/4"long, the horse being 6 1/8" tall and 7 1/2" long, and the directionals are 13 3/8" long, with the letters being 2 9/16- 2 5/8" in height. It weighs about 1 lb. and 4 oz. In any case, it is a very old type of sea going vessel. It is made of very thick iron. And seems to me to have been painted and gilded several times. There are traces of white paint, mustard colored paint and gilding. And quite a few patches of rust of the exposed iron. It has its original solid supporting rod. Which I think is brass and its mounting foot, which may be later than the Ship itself, which I believe dates to sometime in the 1800's. I mounted it to an old piece of ... moretimber. And, as it stands now, this Ship is 27 1/2 inches tall and 19 1/2 inches long. The Ship itself, with its waves at the bottom, is 20 1/4 inches tall and 19 1/2 inches long. Besides its worn surface. Which is one of its chief beauties, there is no damage to this Weather Vane. It sits still and easily turns on its supporting rod. You can clearly make out"PAT JULY 3rd 77" Collectors have told me this is a rare Canadian model. This came out of my Grandparents Estate. He was an electrician and rod installer from roughly 1940-1980. This was packed up in his barn with other items in his collection. I've sold many balls from this collection to happy collectors! Up for auction is an antique hard to find silver merc pointed pleat 5" pumpkin" lightning rod ball. This ball is all original and in very good condition. It has its original tube intact. This is a hard to photograph ball and I have made attempts to show the mercury coating from various angles. Picture#9 shows the spots where the merc coating is gone. The other photos show the diminished merc coating. By diminished coating I mean it still has reflective qualities but not highly reflective. Most of the diminished coating is on the bottom side.I would say no more than 1/3 of the ball. This ball displays quite beautifully. There are no chips. Cracks, or holes in this ball. WEATHER VANE: Antique Rooster. Painted Iron, 1800's. 25.5" Tall x 16" Wide This is a terrific Antique Weather Vane featuring a Rooster that I picked up years ago in Salisbury. Maryland which is the capital of chicken raising country in Southern Maryland. I believe he dates to the 1800's, based on his condition, construction and especially the hand forged supporting rod. He is made of heavy duty cut out iron. His feet are of a lighter gauge. He also has a diagonal iron brace. A couple of patches and a wonderful turning device that goes through both sides with a small wheel. He has traces of brown, black and red paint and must have been painted a number of times. I particularly like the way his eye was cut out. Leaving just the pupil. As he is now on his wooden stand. He is 25 1/2 inches tall and 16 inches wide. He has lost ... moreone of his tail feathers and his wattle seems to have been reattached. Besides this, he has no damage to him, except the obvious wear from being outside so long. ANTIQUE LIGHTNING ROD TOP 5 POINT SPUTNIK STYLE BRONZE? BRASS? Welcome to my auctions. In this lot I have a really great"rare" 5 point brass lightning rod top. Two available. Spudnik style with 5 points. I believe it is either bronze or brass and has a great patina and original finish. Has a patent date but it is hard to read, I think it is 1912. Has a few bent points but if you made it to that age you would have some bent parts also. They stand about 9" tall and about 9 1/2" wide. These are becoming harder to get because they are bronze or brass and lots are being melted for scrap. Most of my items are preowned, vintage or antique so they will show age appropriate wear. ANTIQUE LIGHTNING ROD WITH ARROW, BALL, 5-POINT TOP AND BASE STAND!!
ANTIQUE LIGHTNING ROD WITH KRETZER ARROW. FINIAL AND BALL! Up for auction is this great find of an old lightning rod with arrow and ball. The Lightning Rod has the twisted iron rods which show its age due to the rust on the rods but in good shape. The rods have two connectors that have the white porcelain insulators marked“ RH CO No. 74” Reyburn-Hunter and Company) The copper end on the middle rod is also marked“ RH CO” and has a green patina. The center rod measures approximately 62” high. The arrow is marked“Kretzer St. Louis” and shows its age with its green patina. The arrow is non-magnetic and measures 22” long. The ball is a nice cobalt blue color in good condition with just the usual nicks/cuts on the rims. There are no ball caps. Ball measures 5 ½“ high and has a circumference of approximately 14” Included is also the 5-Point ... morebrass Ajax top(finial) The non-magnetic top has a green patina and in good condition. Marked“Ajax” I have removed some of the points from its base but packed together for safe shipping. The lightning rod has a round metal stand. Shows rust but in good condition. WEATHER VANE: Antique Washburn Eagle. Gilded Copper, Late 1800's. 27.24" x 23.5" This is a terrific Weather Vane featuring a gilded Eagle perched on a globe with his wings outstretched and his arrow beneath which I acquired years ago at Medford Circle. West of Nashua New Hampshire. I am as sure as I can be that this Eagle was made by E.G. Washburn& Company of New York in the late 1800's. Below is an image of an almost identical Eagle auctioned in the last few years. And attributed as I have attributed the present one, by one of the large houses in New York City: The distinguishing characteristic of the lowered head is the same in both Eagles. The seams in our Eagle are all joined with a wide solder. In a more crude fashion, as can be expected in an earlier vane. Most of the gilding has been worn away. Especially on the ... moretop surfaces of the wings, tail and back, which were naturally more subject to weathering forces. A coat of verdigris had developed on most of the exposed surfaces, but the verdigris does not cover the solder joints, as the latter are not copper. This is a tell for authenticity. The post below the ball is worn and the bottom of the sleeve is split. Exhibiting wear according to its term of use from spinning round and round on the mount for many years. A few of the very ends of the fletchings of the arrow are bent as expected wear. T he small screw which holds the arrow in place is a later replacement But on the whole. This Eagle is in very good antique condition and he still turns proudly on his supporting rod. As our Eagle stands on his wooden support. He is 27 1/4 inches tall and 23 1/2 inches long. His wingspan is 20 inches. The end of the arrow rod is sealed. The photos give a very good idea of the beauty and power of this fine Antique Eagle Weather Vane. If you should have any questions. WEATHER VANE: Antique Rooster. Painted Tin, 22" Tall x 23.5" Wide This is a terrific Antique Weather Vane featuring a Rooster that I picked up years ago in Salisbury. Maryland which is the capital of chicken raising country in Southern Maryland. I think he is the work of some local craftsman. Rather than a commercially produced piece. He is made of cut out and assembled pieces of tin. His body was painted black; his comb, wattle and tail, red. Much of the paint has worn off revealing patches of rust. I particularly admire the overlapping semi-circular pieces used to form his hollow body. His wattle is in two pieces opened toward the front. Serving as the wind catcher. As he is now on is wooden stand he is 22 inches tall and 23 1/2 inches long. His hollow body is 3 inches at its widest. He did avoid being the object of target practice. ... moreBut the ends of his tail feathers have suffered some trauma. Other than that. WEATHER VANE: Antique Banneret. Gilded Iron. Copper& Brass, 22.5" x 23" This is a wonderful old Banneret Weather Vane which I found years ago west of Nashua. New Hampshire, near Millford Circle. I don't know the maker or its age for sure. I might guess it dates to the early 1900's or late 1800's It is made almost entirely of Iron. The four flowers are copper and I believe the ball at the top is brass. There is a coat of dark or black paint under the gilding on the iron parts. And there is some verdigris which has developed on the flowers and ball a the top As it stands now on its wooden base. This Vane is 22 1/2 inches stall and 23 inches long. The wooden base adds another inch and a half. There is a newer steel support rod which runs up through the whole and keeps it together. Referred to as Barnett Ball. Offered by Jos. Barnett& Co. of Riverside. Iowa. Began business around 1896 and was out of business by the depression. Barnett referred to these balls as‘corrugated’ or ornamental. From my research I have done on the Net and what the collectors have told me is that these Vintage Flash Red Barnett balls are extremely rare.
