French Empire Mahogany Marble Top Commode Chest Dresser with Gilt Mounts c. 1805

Description: This listing is for a 19th Century French Empire Period Mahogany Marble Top Ormolu Mounted Commode. Circa 1805. It is a fascinating work of art, constructed in three parts- first the marble, which is extremely heavy at just over an inch thick(1 1/16" thick) the top of the chest with the top drawer, and the bottom of the chest with the lower three drawers. Lifting the marble reveals the construction of the topmost portion. Each of the front corners with a full gallery of hand cut dovetails that lock the top into the thick corners. All of the secondaries are solid oak, joined with large pegged tenons along the frame, this large thick top joining the lower case with thick through-tenon wedged mortise joints- by ... morepulling out the wedge, the tenon drops out of the top portion, freeing it from the lower case. This lifts away from the case as long as the columns are not nailed at the top. The top drawer features the most incredible gilt ormolu mounts. Cast with stunning attention to even the smallest detail. Horizontal curled anthemions flank a seated angel, inscribing in a blank scroll. With wings furled behind, detailed even down to the tiniest feather, the angel rests with legs slightly bent as the robe flows from his legs, a trumpet peering out from behind him. Over either columnar support, gilt ormolu mounts of angels flank the top drawer, the figure on the right peering towards the sky with a globe behind him, the angel on the left sitting on a carefully crafted French Empire chair reading a scroll. The turned columns on either side rest on square plinths. Capped at the top and bottom with gold gilt flamed mounts, finely detailed throughout. Three drawers slide in and out of the case, each hand dovetailed front and back with solid oak secondary woods making up the frame and bottoms. Fine English Chippendale Mahogany Kneehole Desk c. 1740-60 Originality preserved throughout in the hardware and feet- Only the desk is being offered in this listing. The chair shown is offered elsewhere in our collection Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably preserved English Chippendale Period Kneehole Desk. Circa 1740-50. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk, just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware ... moreadorns each drawer. Appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. Appearing to be part of the frame design, but actually pulls outward smoothly as an extra hand dovetailed drawer. Offered for bids is an early 19th century Sheraton chest of drawers measuring 42 ½” high& 40” wide. Top measures 40 ½” wide& is 19 ¾“ deep with an appropriate rear over hang. Four graduated drawers with matching flame veneered fronts. I suspect this might be walnut but may also be a brown mahogany. Bought out of Reading PA. All drawers are dovetailed& beaded. The drawers runners are worn but run smoothly. There is some small chipping to the beading. One of the balls of the right front foot has a chip. Retains its locks. Brasses are replacements. Evidence of other pulls. The chest has been refinished at least once. There are some cross grain scratches on the sides from previous stripping. Information on This Item This is a classic Mahogany 19th Century Step back Chest with rope twist columns. Scalloped apron, and brass rosettes on the backsplash. The drawer construction is mortise and tendon, and this is as near perfect as any 1850's piece you can hope to find. It measures 42" wide, 18 1/2" deep on each corner and 20" deep at the center. It stands 47 1/4" tall. The top has sandwich cut corners, and original wood knobs. The graceful bowfront design will be a great look in any setting. The chest has a stepped back rectangular top which sits above a large beaded frieze panel. Flanked on each side by a smaller beaded panel. Beneath is a single deep drawer flanked on the left by two short drawers and on the right by a single deep drawer with a faux two drawer front. This row of drawers is above three graduated long drawers. Each of the chest’s drawers has turned knobs, brass escutcheons and their original locks. Although we do not have a key for the chest, the buyer can easily have a locksmith make a new key. The entire bank of drawers is flanked by elegant spiral reeded pilasters. A late18th to early 19th Century American Chippendale large chest of drawers. Possibly Southern in origin. Height- 43 5/8 inches Width- 43 inches Depth- 20 inches American Revolutionary to Federal Period large chest of drawers. Appropriate wear to the internal parts and rails consistent with the age. Original finish with wear. Replacement handles. The chest may have originally had single drop pulls and as there is a single hole space under the present handles. Mahogany or black cherry veneer over poplar or elm secondary woods. All woods are well desiccated. Appropriate to the suggested time period. Appears that all of the original wood is intact including secondary woods. Varied hand cut dovetails. Mortise and tenon interior. Original back panels. Hand chamfered throughout. Interesting progression of individual drawer height; top- 5 7/8 inches, ... moresecond- 6 7/8 inches, third- 7 7/8 and bottom- 8 7/8 inches. Top drawer face is beveled edged. Needs a good deep polishing and fill ins to scratches. Minor vaneer flaking and nicks on top, front, sides and feet. Structurally solid. Overall in very good condition. Circa 1820's Federal Two Tone Chest Of Drawers From a local estate this piece made in the 1820's out of mainly Cherry wood with Flame Mahogany veneered fronts. The piece is solid and of heavy construction with the front drawers being anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2" thick. Each drawer is of tongue and groove construction with the key holes having either Maple or Ivory inserts. The drawers do open and close smoothly. Second drawer has beaded edge work all around front face. The only problem with this piece is the numerous veneers chips on the sides and edges of some of the drawers and front fascia. Most of them have been there forever and really aren't that noticeable but you look at the photo's and decide for yourself. We'd like to believe it adds charm and character. This is a superb period early 19th century chest that features beautiful flamed mahogany on the drawer fronts. The original brass pulls and early hand-cut dove-tailed ends on the drawers. This exceptional chest measures 46 1/4 inches in height.41 3/4 inches wide and 22 1/4 inches deep and weighs approximately 135 lbs.
