This is an old original blue pleated lightning rod ball. It is in very good condition. There are no cracks or breaks. There is chipping to the collar ends which is very common with these old balls. The collar ends are shown in the pics. It has a nice shiny finish to the glass and is a nice bright blue. It measures 4 1/2" across at the widest point. It will be well packed and fully insured. Measures about 5 inches tall and is about 3 1/2 inches in diameter at widest point and 1 1/4 inches in diameter at the openings. It appears that it is a blue colored milk glass type glass. It is embossed with a diamond with"D&S" inside of it. Also embossed with Patent Pending. You can see the openings are a bit rough. But it looks like a lot of that is from the manufacturing. The one opening is stained and has more chips in it. My guess is there was a metal cap/sleeve type thing there and it rusted. This is a very cool blue colored piece to ass to your collection! For sale is a pair of vintage lightning rod balls. may be antique. These came from the farm country of Southeast Kansas from an Antique Dealers auction. In another auction I will list 2 metal vanes. The balls. One blue and one white appear to be like milk glass. The blue one has been used and has come chipping around both of its 1.25" lips. The white one has a pair of plastic fasteners attached and I notice some chipping on one end. This need cleaning. But otherwise I do not see any condition issues. About 5" long; softball size. This is a beautiful old copper lightning rod with metal stand and blue milk glass W.C. Shinn Mfg. Co. ball. The copper has a fantastic green patina and the stand has some surface rust. But it is still sturdy and functional. There are holes in the ends of the stand legs for attaching the stand to the roof or other structure. The glass ball is a bold robin's egg blue with the words W.C. Shinn Mfg. Co. wrapped around the middle. There are some tiny chips missing from the top rim and two larger chips missing from the bottom as shown in the 4th, 7th, and last photo. The ball still sits nicely on the metal disk, and there are no cracks in the glass anywhere. The white disk you can see under the ball on the photos is a thin foam disk that is there to protect the bottom rim of the ball, but it is not necessary and can be slipped right off. Plain round BMG( blue milk glass) lightning rod ball. The glass of this ball is different. The best way I can described it is that it appears to have swirls in the glass. Up for auction is a blue milk glass lightning rod ball in the pleat round or Barnett pattern. This ball was made for the Jos. Barnett& Co. out of Riverside Iowa. The ball measures 5" by 4 3/8" The collars are in good shape with just usual collar chipping. This ball is a lighter than typical color blue. It almost has a lavender hue in the blue and it is very pretty. In picture#5 I have shown this ball next to a standard blue milk glass Diddie Blitzen lightning rod ball for color comparison.
