4 1/2" Silver merc plain round lightning rod ball. This ball has 1" caps that are threaded onto the tube. One of the caps has some splitting as pictured. The mercury coating is close to 100% with typical haze. No chips or cracks in the body of the ball. Overall condition is very good.

This is an old original blue pleated lightning rod ball. It is in very good condition. There are no cracks or breaks. There is chipping to the collar ends which is very common with these old balls. It looks like something from out of this world by its shape and design. This old lightning rod ball is in near mint condition. With the slight exception of an area where there is a glaze chip on the top, that looks to have been done in the manufacturing process(see pictures to determine) This lightning rod ball looks like it was well taken care of from the elements, as there are no scratches, chips or hairlines. It was totally covered in black soot when recovered, and an overnight soak in oxalic acid did the trick. This example was found in the southwestern area of Pennsylvania in farm ... morecountry. These were used on the old 1/2 inch twisted copper wire rods as both the openings are barely 3/4" wide at both ends. This ball measures 4 1/4" tall, and is 4" in diameter.
