I am not positive of the boxes origin but I believe this is Folk Art. There ... moreare hand painted tulips on the edges and hand painted white flowers used in early American art. The measurements are 17 inches wide or long. 9 1/2 inches in height, and 7 1/2 inches deep. The chest/ Box weighs 11 pounds. It does have wear which is to be expected for it's age. The paint on the flowers have faded in some places, there are a few cracks on the wood, one is on the bottom(does not go all the way through, and one is on the inside of the lid. Wood shrinks with age and cracks are normal. There are a few places where wood has chipped off(one on the foot) the lock is missing and there is a heavy patina especially the places that would get the most use(by the handles. The front side has a darker patina(see 2nd picture) than the back side, it was probably sitting up against a wall and was covered on the top. The feet did have felt pads at one time. The rivets(or nails) are old type nails. It is made very well, it is very heavy and sturdy and it closes fine. It is a very beautiful piece whatever its origin is and the paint job is intricate and looks like it was very time consuming. Please email with any questions I will be glad to help. Antique Wooden Painted Nautical Sailors Fishing Chest Trunk Box 1800's Steamer
This is an AMAZING antique fishing chest. I think it's late 1800's maybe really early 1900's. when I purchased it there was a bunch of old salt water fishing hooks and a sting ray barb& other cool stuff in it! One of the almost completely deteriorated paper boxes of hooks read 1910 on it, so I know it's at least that old. There are awesome adjustable wooden cubby compartments on the inside& spots to put a rod on the inside upper lid. In the pictures I left some of the fishing stuff in there. But its cleaned out now. There are some amazing graphics on this chest. On the top of the chest is a nautical compass reading north east south and west, on the front under the latch(which is fully functional) are the initials F.D.JR. On the right side of the chest are three flags I'm not sure if these three flags identify the ... morearea in which it was made? maybe someone with nautical knowledge will know for sure. And on the left is an anchor with rope twisting around it. Im pretty sure these are all hand painted. Or super old decals. But I'm pretty sure there hand painted. The chest appears to have a sealant on the outside. Which I'm sure they would have done to help protect it from salt water. There are no major cracks in this chest. I have put no chemicals on it to clean it. Just a damp rag. Now a couple down sides to this beauty: the back hinges have rusted and broken.see pics) and on the sides it looks like there were a couple ropes screwed in to keep it on board? That are gone. And a few cracks on the bottom. The chest measures 22" long X 10 1/2" wide. And sits 8" tall. If there are any questions please feel free to ask& I will answer them best I can. The officers, being predominately from the upper classes, were accustomed to a certain standard of living and found it unthinkable to travel without their necessaries. Has been in the family since the early 1970's. Features: Small wooden chest of square design with lovely red/brown lithograph paper bearing beautiful designs. Inside there is a removable. 2 compartment top tray. Tray rails are solid and existing. Tray fits firmly and is supported. All metal stays are solid and in place. Paper covering is original. No mildew or musty smells. Metal features are not damaged nor bent. Lid closes firm and completely aligned. Hinge tight. Straight and completely aligned. Inside. I couldn't work out how to put all this into the e-bay postage bit- so please ignore the £1.00 delivery! This was bought on e-bay about five years ago- as a gift for my son- who is now into Danish teak and has asked me to sell it for him. Think it was originally a brass bound cedar? household chest. That had a shaped pedestal fitted around the turn of the century along with extra brass hasp and staples for padlocks. It was probably purchased overseas, and when the owner decided to return to the UK, he made it extra secure for ... morethe voyage. It has a large initialled plaque on the lid(R.B. and a nice brass shield shaped escutcheon plate- but no key- also has big solid iron carry handles. The lid has internal locking hinges so you can rummage in safety. Measurements are 2' wide x 15" front to back x 14" high overall. It is in reasonably good condition- wood. Hinges etc are all sound- and looks great. Think the person who sold it me had a half hearted go at restoring it- so could probably benefit from being rubbed down and a bit elbow grease. EXTREMELY RARE VINTAGE AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE STAGE COACH WOODEN 2 DRAWER DOME TOP TRUNK/CHEST SOLID WOOD circa 1840's Up for auction is this very rare vintage and authentic STAGE COACH WOODEN 2 DRAWER TRUNK/ CHEST SOLID WOOD with a dome top. It was actually used on a stage coach and in very good condition for its age. Shabby chic rustic and rugged. Made of solid wood and sturdy. On the outside there is a little paint loss on it due to its age. Mostly on the back of the trunk on the bottom. The outside was probably refinished at one point. It was hand or CUSTOM made. Very heavy well made chest. It is solid with no damage to it or its 2 drawers. The drawers are 14 3/4 inches in depth x 20 inches long x 2" wide. In good solid condition. None of the wood shows any sign of damage. Warping or shrinkage. Both drawers open and close easily. ... moreTwo metal knobs are present on each drawer to open them. The previous owner told us that it was checked by an expert and was made sometime during the 1840's and except for one handle on the top. Everything else is original. It looks like it may have been used as a gun/pistol box or a storage box for guns. Its bottom drawer is QUITE UNIQUE. The drawer has seven raised wooden compartments in the color blue. That color blue was not be the original color. TWO of those compartments were designed specifically to fit pistols. The other compartments perhaps to hold ammo and anything else related to pistols or guns. The trunk/chest by design does not have any side handles. Four strips of embossed metal adore its domed top. When you open the trunk/chest it will not remain open unless you put something underneath the top to prevent it from closing. Underneath the lid of the trunk there is a secret compartment. The interior is in very good condition. The inside of the trunk is all natural wood. Very clean with no odors. Painted Dome Top Trunk 1800's or Earlier Wooden Chest Unique Must See
This very old painted dome lid trunk or chest is amazing. Unknown age and origin. But it obviously predates the 1900’s, possibly even the 1800’s. Look closely at the paintings– ornate scrolls, flowers, and a bird on the arched lid; flowers on the right end, and a lovely woman in a garden and a flower filled vase on the front panels. It appears as if this were cut in half at one time long ago. My guess is that it might have been a dowry chest from“the old country” that either was damaged or needed to be reduced in size. Perhaps to transport. Inside the lid is very early wallpaper. I’ve left old newspapers inside as I purchased it– 1930’s papers from Philadelphia. This measures 30” long X 21” wide or deep X 17 ½” to the top of the base and 23” to the top of the arched lid. The left end is painted blue– no decorations– probably missing ... morepart of the original chest. I’ve used this for many years as a decorative piece– the left end against a wall. Therefore the chest may be dated sometime during the late 1870's-90's. This storage chest is in very good overall condition for it's age, but the backside of the chest has a split in the wood on the rear left latch. The locks feature a cross style that turn to unlatch the chest. The interior features a variety of styles of paper coverings over the shelf and underside of the lid. Fragments of which still remain. ... moreIf you restore this trunk, then I hope you get a leather worker to make new straps(which would look great) This trunk has Wooden(oak) Slats. Which now have a rich patina from years of use. I polished the exterior of the trunk and the slats look even better in my opinion. The lock is open and appears to be functional. But we don't have the key. This trunk includes the Till. It is covered in paper which is chipping and peeling. I would remove it if you restore the trunk. The edges of the trunk are leather. The exterior surface of the trunk is fabric over wooden construction. The fabric is well worn and frayed. With bits missing, especially along the edges. If you restore the trunk, one direction you can take would be to strip the exterior(and interior) of the covering and simply finish the wood underneath. The corners and some of the edges are metal bound. The metal has a nice dark patina. The leather handles on the ends are now gone. New leather is needed there. Inside. The fabric covering is badly stained and either should be removed and the wood underneath finished, or replaced. The interior smells musty and old, but not mildewed in my opinion. I bought this solid black walnut blanket chest 33 years ago. And now have no place to display it. It was built by a very talented craftsman, who also used dovetailed joints and some wooden pins. I was told that it was from the Civil War period. Item measures about 26" high, 19" wide, and 49" long. The finish hasn't been redone/ altered since before I bought it, so chest is a bit dull appearing. Chest has normal wear and some dings, etc. as to be expected. The value when I bought it was placed at least $500.00 and that is my price. Striking antique. Oval, wooden lock chest with hand-forged iron hardware. It has the date"1845" carved in the underside of the top with initials ZH and ZVSV stamped on the top and on the underside of the top. I am unsure of the origin but the area of Germany/France has been suggested. The chest was clearly built with the purpose of keeping its items secure, perhaps for traveling or shipping purposes. The chest is approximately 20.25" wide, 15" deep and 12.5" tall from the bottom to the highest point of the dome top. It weighs approximately 14 pounds. Being an old chest. It shows expected wear. It is overall very solid but does have its share of dings, scuffs, and some minor loosening of the iron band and wood bottom trim in a couple of areas.
