Antique Vintage Old Large Copper & Brass Weathervane Running Horse Weathervane
This is a beautiful old weathervane. The horse. Directional arrows, and decorative balls appear to be copper. The 3 demensional items are hollow. The horizontal bar under the horse appears to be some other material possibly brass. The verticle rod(black) seems to be steel or iron. I do not know the age, I aquired it at auction in the 80's and thought to add it to a cupola on the barn. This many years later it's still in the garage. This is a very large item and will come disassembled. I'm not sure that I have it assembled correctly but it seems to work. Overall assembled demensions are appx. 45" tall and 31" wide. The Horse is almost 28" wide nose to tail and appx. 13 1/2" tall. There are two decorative balls. MASSIVE 32" Horse Weathervane/ Lightning rod Antique Vintage Copper Brass Horse measures approx. 31" x 17" and the whole piece measures approx. 33" long x 20" tall. It is being sold as found. It will need to be reattached to the pole. I do not know what the head is made from but it looks like brass(just not positive) and I do not know how old it is but it looks very old. View all of the photos and use zoom and enlarge. There are two small scratches on one side(see the last two photos) I wipes the item with a soft cloth and water to get off the dust. This is a lovely vintage HORSE& SULKY WEATHERVANE with original directionals. Cupola not included. Blown off a Connecticut Farmhouse during Hurricane Sandy. Total length of weathervane: 31" Width: 11 1/2" Height(from top of Horse to lower horizontal bar) 15" Distance between N to S. E to W: 22 1/4" Weathervane shows some sign of age. Including some spokes on the wheels that have come undone, bottom horizontal bar that has come away from one of the wheels, and reins have come away from the riders hand(coarse repair still in place- see photos) Fantastic authentic patina. Looking around ebay I'd say it's likely not an antique but it is very well built and hand-crafted from formed copper soldered together with brass tubing for the structural support elements. It has been stored indoors so it's starting to get a nice patina but has not yet developed full verdigris. All soldered joints are solid. You'll notice that one of the wheels is bent in slightly and the front leg of the horse is slightly tweaked. Both could be easily bent back to shape if you so desire. This antique work of art. Horse& sulky with rider, copper with patina/and brass/cast iron,zinc? weather vane. I was told it was made in the 1800's it was on an old barn that was built in the 1800's so it most likely was the original weather vane put there when it was built. I love this beautiful piece of Americana folk art. The horses ears are missing,it needs some minor fixes,some parts need welded,there is a crack in the base& the end piece of the base is missing but it still is usable, in all its in great shape for its age and the fact that it was in use until recently. The most important parts still exist. It measures 33" long 14" high to the top of the riders head.It is a true vintage work of art! Natural wear and imperfections just add more character! Vintage Horse Sulky Copper Weathervane with Brass Directionals
This weather vane came from a farm in Illinois. I'm not sure how old it is. It has brass directionals included. There is a slight separation at the horse's tail and a break at one of the wheels(see pictures) The horse has a lot of details that most weather vanes like this don't have. The ears are original and are usually broken off from wear(see picture) The weather vane measures 31 x 16 inches. The directionals measure 18 x 18 inches. Vintage Antique COPPER HORSE & SULKY w/RIDER WEATHER VANE Weathervane
Antique or vintage weathervane that I believe is an earlier version of this type. The soldered seams are on the crude side with lots of tarnish and patina. I'll keep my age estimate pretty wide to be safe and say early 20th century to the depression. There is some oxidation also. The driver seams to have the most. From the front pipe to the back of the wheel is about 32" Several non distracting type dents that are normal for this age but the wheels are pretty bent. They do bend easy to fix. Off hand I see 4 spots where this piece needs to be spot soldered, it's only attached at the vertical bar. The bottom of one wheel to the pipe, the end of one spoke(I did that bending the wheels) and the 2 rear feet get soldered to the pipe. You can see where both feet where attached. Antique Vintage running horse Weathervane. This is not a Reproduction. Most reproductions are done in 2 halves, and this has 10 pieces welded together, so it definitely has vintage/antique age, but not sure of the date. The mount looks like from the 1950's. Early 20th century or could be earlier. Looks like early piece construction. With no damage. Just good looking. Solid. The balls are brass. And the rest is copper, with a wonderful patina. VINTAGE COPPER & BRASS HORSE WEATHERVANE FROM OLD BARN
Here is an old weathervane we found in an old horse born back in a grown over field. The horse is copper and the N E S W letters are solid brass. The ball is copper. And the mounting pole is metal. It was covered with years of dust when we found it, and pictures 1 and 2 show it before it was dusted off. Note the cobwebs and thick layer of dust on the horse and the N E S W. We dusted it off, but didn't fully clean it, as we wanted to let the new owner clean it to his or her preferenes. Pictures 4, 5, 6, 9 show the weathervane after it was dusted. It is a beautiful large weathervane that stands 44 inches tall from top of horse to bottom of metal pole. The horse is approximately 30 inches long. This looks like an old timer and it has been resoldered in a few places and there are a couple of splits in the brass here and there. Picture 7 shows ... morea split in the lower tube near the horses right foot, however it doesn't affect the way the weathervane operates. When a strong breeze is in the air, the horse will swivel on its pole as all weathervanes do. New owner may want to have it repaired, but that's a matter of choice. As mentioned previously, it needs a good cleaning, but the patina that's on it now makes it have that really vintage look. This copper weathervane form was made by soldering two pressed halves together on top of brass tubing. His ears were separately soldered onto his head. He is large enough to be a statement piece but still small enough that you can find a place to display him. He's mounted on a small 100+ year old hand hewn barn beam. This lovely old weathervane topper is made of two sheets of copper which have been formed on a mold to create dimension and detail. Then soldered together with ears applied. We found this handsome fellow in an old barn, covered with dust(cliche, but true! in New Hampshire. Displays beautifully. We had a hard time listing him as he does look amazing in our home! The full bodied(hollow, double-sided) horse measures about 29 1/4" from nose to tail and about 13" high from ears to front foot(measurement does not include the attached stand) There is some overall oxidation as happens when copper ages and some dents and dings. The piece has been restored as follows: each sulky wheel was mended using a short copper tubing and a spot of solder; as well. One spoke in each wheel was restored using copper.
