Up for bidding is this unique hunter and hunting dog weathervane. Great weathervane just came into the shop with lots of patina. The rear fin needs to be set back in place and secured. The front point has some bends in the metal. It appears to have been red in color at some point. There is dings. Scratching, paint loss, rusting, etc. Pictures give best description. Rare Folk Art Full Bodied Cod Fish Weathervane Great Folk Art Paint Vintage Old Description: Wonderful Vintage Full Bodied Cod Fish Weathervane A remarkable find. We found this wonderful piece of folk art several years ago in an estate out of Massachusetts. The form as you can see is a full bodied cod fish. Complete with attached fins and punched scale patterns. The woman who we purchased the item from stated that she had found in off the coast of Mass. decades ago. Judging from the paint patterns and construction of the body. We feel the piece is circa 1940's, though several other dealers we have shown it to place it slightly earlier. A close pattern itself can be seen in some earlier weathervane catalogs, but again we feel the construction places it later. Also of note. And in agreement with the former owner, the piece has probably ... moreused at a sea-side town, the salty air corroding the surface into what now is an absolutely beautiful patina. Please take a moment to click on the images and you'll see you can produce enlargements that showcase the condition and construction. There is some areas of rust through. Notably near the tail, and also at the lower fins. All the fins are still in place but the piece is in fragile condition. There is even some metal flaking in the interior, heard when the piece is moved. We love the compliment of the rusty surface with the old paint. Mounted on a stand and displayed in both a modern or country home this would be a focal piece of art! Measures an impressive 36" x 12" x 4" Please note shipping is an estimate! We are pleased to offer this wonderful example of blacksmith made American Folk Art. From its great patina, to the nice riveting. The profile as you can see is a running fox hound. Excellent attention to detail. The original maker wrought this piece with various pieces of metal, not sparing and details of the hound, including a punched out eye form, and even the tip of the dogs tongue. The piece looks to have been originally a red with possibly some yellow areas(perhaps the remains of old lettering from the estate in which it was used) And later a darker brown. It is made of heavy cut out sheet metal and shows a native American complete with head dress and shooting a bow and arrow. It is riveted on one side with small brackets to create a holder for the pole. The weather vane is on a iron pole, there is a wood ball and the pole is mounted in a piece of burl wood. Nice original rusty patina, this is a great piece of original Folk Art, an original weather vane piece. The Indian figure measures 16.5" tall and is about 13" wide. Together with the pole and stand. Copper with solid Brass N-S-E-W direction arrows. Has a beautiful patina. Green glass eyes. Grasshopper measures 24" long x 15" H. Direction arrows are 18" L. Total height of the entire piece is 47" There are also(2) decorative copper balls- 1) large and(1) small. This is a beautiful work of art that is also functional. Item is in very nice condition.
