A very unique carving. This is a wooden mold for a weather vane surrey or cart driver. The jockey was carved out of wood and then a sand mold was made ... morefrom him. Next an iron form was poured which was then used to tap the copper into shape. This is the original carving. We have mounted this in an exploded view so you can see all the different parts of the carving. Found in New England outside Boston it dates to the late 1800's to the early 1900's. On the mounting the rider stands 21 5/8" high and 16" long. He has a chipped nose and toe on one side of the mold. Otherwise he is in excellent condition. Like us on face book. This lightning rod is very old- all of the iron parts are rusty and the copper? finial has great green patina. The twisted rod moves freely up and down in the base guides. The finial is marked KRETZER ST. LOUIS- see photo 4. Please see the other items I have listed. Great piece of American folk art this full body copper molded weathervane is from the late 1800’s. ANTIQUE- VINTAGE COPPER WEATHERVANE LATE 1800'S
This weathervane was removed from our victorian home in Hastings. NE. the home was built in the late 1880's. It is made of Copper and has a lovely patina as you can see. WEATHER VANE: Monumental J.W. Fiske Banneret, Gilded Copper, late 1800's.49"Tall
WEATHER VANE: Monumental J.W. Fiske Banneret. Gilded Copper. Late 1800's, 49"Tall This is a wonderful and monumentally large J.W. Fiske Banneret Weather Vane. Most likely made sometime in the 1880's or 1890's. On its wooden stand it is 49 inches tall and 48 3/4 inches long. It is very impressive and has a beautifull and complicated patina. The catalog for J.W. Fiske: Copper Weathervanes. Bannerets, Lightning Rods, Stable Fixtures, 1893" shows several Bannerets very similar to this one. Two similar Bannerets were recently auctioned at the Houses in New York; below are photos of two of them: J.W. Fiske& Co. was founded in 1863 by Joseph Winn Fiske. Considered to be one of the preeminent New York City makers of ornamental iron and zinc objects in the second half of the nineteenth century. J.W. Fiske& Co. is most ... morewell-known for its fine production of copper weather vanes, which were produced in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Fiske's designs ranged from the naturalistic foliate designs that were the stock-in-trade of mid-Victorian style to sculptures after the Antique or neoclassical works of Antonio Canova or Bertel Thorvaldsen. Suitable for park-like landscapes of estates and landscape cemeteries of formal schemes. As it is now on its wooden base. This Banneret stands 49 inches tall and is 48 3/4 inches long. The horizontal arrow section of the Banneret itself is 12 inches tall and 48 3/4 inches long. The tall spike rises 22 inches above the horizontal section. The ball is 6 1/2 inches in diameter. This is a very large Weather Vane. The bottom black part of the supporting rod is a piece of hollow steel which I used to mount the Banneret. The original part of the supporting rod is solid. Not hollow. The end of the arrow is closed, but dented a bit. I believe this Banneret has been gilded several times. Much of the gold is worn away revealing a coat of mustard colored undercoat. This was used on old vanes so that when the gilding started to wear. The loss would not be so apparent from far be
WEATHER VANE:Antique Schooner, Gilded & Painted Iron, 25.25" x 30", late 1800's
WEATHER VANE:Antique Schooner. Gilded& Painted Iron, 25.25" x 30" Late 1800's This is a great old Weather Vane I picked up in Gloucester. Massachusetts, many years ago when I was living in Cambridge. Gloucester, of course, was long famous as having a huge fishing fleet. I think the type of vessel portrayed is a Schooner, but I may be wrong. It is made of very thick iron. And seems to me to have been painted and gilded several times. On the first mast there is an American Flag painted. It doesn't have the correct number of stripes, but think the idea was probably just to have something visible from far below that would look like Old Glory. Besides the layers of paint and gilding, there is quite a bit of rusty patches, especially on the riveted iron struts and the supporting rods. I think this ship dates to the late 1800's ... moreI mounted it to an old piece of timber. And as it stands now, this Ship is 25 1/4 inches tall and 30 inches long. The Ship itself, with its waves at the bottom is 14 1/2 inches tall and and 27 inches long. The arrow with its great fanciful fletchings is 30 inches long Besides its worn surface. Which is one of its chief beauties, there is no damage to this Weather Vane. It sits still and easily turns on its supporting rod. The photos give a very good idea of this charming and beautiful example of American metal work from the late 1800's. If you should have any questions. Please don't hesitate to contact me. And thanks for looking. Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings. The color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the Ship itself, but I did my best to capture it as it is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect match. IF THE WINNING BIDDER DOES NOT REQUIRE THE WOOD BASE. WHICH IS NOTHING SPECIAL, THE SHIPPING COSTS WOULD PROBABLY BE CUT BY TWO THIRDS. Payment: Winning Bidders: please pay for your item within three days of this auction's close. Foreign Buyers: please request a
Antique Large Copper Running Horse Weathervane / Folk Art - Late 1800's
This rare weathervane circa late 1800's came from an estate in northern California. This is an original Victorian era piece! The hollow copper horse measures an impressive 30” from nose to tail and 14” from head to hoof. The horse body rotates on an axis above the 18” wind indicator letters. Two hollow copper balls; 5” and 3 ½” sit atop the indicator. Overall the weathervane is in great vintage condition. With beautiful oxidation and patina. It comes with the original 37" pole and 12” diameter cast iron base. This piece of Americana/ Folk Art is an awesome addition for the collector as well as a beautiful piece to enhance your property or home décor. Thanks for looking. And if you have any questions or would like to see additional pictures of any item, don’t hesitate to contact me. Please look through my photographs carefully ... moreread the full description before bidding. I do my best to accurately describe all items and take pride in my customer service. WEATHER VANE: Antique Washburn Eagle, Gilded Copper, Late 1800's, 27.24" x 23.5"
WEATHER VANE: Antique Washburn Eagle. Gilded Copper, Late 1800's. 27.24" x 23.5" This is a terrific Weather Vane featuring a gilded Eagle perched on a globe with his wings outstretched and his arrow beneath which I acquired years ago at Medford Circle. West of Nashua New Hampshire. I am as sure as I can be that this Eagle was made by E.G. Washburn& Company of New York in the late 1800's. Below is an image of an almost identical Eagle auctioned in the last few years. And attributed as I have attributed the present one, by one of the large houses in New York City: The distinguishing characteristic of the lowered head is the same in both Eagles. The seams in our Eagle are all joined with a wide solder. In a more crude fashion, as can be expected in an earlier vane. Most of the gilding has been worn away. Especially on the ... moretop surfaces of the wings, tail and back, which were naturally more subject to weathering forces. A coat of verdigris had developed on most of the exposed surfaces, but the verdigris does not cover the solder joints, as the latter are not copper. This is a tell for authenticity. The post below the ball is worn and the bottom of the sleeve is split. Exhibiting wear according to its term of use from spinning round and round on the mount for many years. A few of the very ends of the fletchings of the arrow are bent as expected wear. T he small screw which holds the arrow in place is a later replacement But on the whole. This Eagle is in very good antique condition and he still turns proudly on his supporting rod. As our Eagle stands on his wooden support. He is 27 1/4 inches tall and 23 1/2 inches long. Late 1800's Eagle Weathervane in Perfect Natural Surface! N/R, Low Opening Bid
I've decided to go ahead and list this eagle with no reserve and start it at $99.00 Estate fresh! Very fine and detailed 19th c. eagle weathervane with a cast zinc head and copper body. Remarkable surface! Has wear consistent with being outside for over 100 years. One bullet ding that I could find and some bending to wing tips. Has a worn area on arrow shaft. Not sure what happened there? I am selling just the eagle on arrow with copper ball. Nothing else! Nothing below the arrow. Those are the original directional in the picture. But I am keeping them for now. They don't come off the post due to rust and it would make shipping much higher than $50 for this vane. To be clear the ball seen below arrow is not included in sale. Not is post or stand. 23 1/4" wing span, 19" tall and the arrow is over 24" long. Buyer pays ... more50.00 SH&I inside the USA. Large item. No bidders from outside the US. PayPal or cash on pick up.
