Antique ORIGINAL copper/iron/milk glass WHITE ball LIGHTENING ROD complete
This is one of the original lightening rods that was on the roof of the old farm that we bought in MI. The farm was built in 1912. The tripod used to attach it to the peak of the roof is made of iron. The tripod legs straddle the peak and are attached with screws. The pointed post is made of copper and has a lovely. Aged patina. The glass ball is made of white milkglass. I do not see any markings of any kind on this ball. The total thing stands 5 feet 5" tall with the tripod going straight down. The ball is about 4" in diameter. The heavy metal ground wire went from one lightening rod to the next and finally down the corner of the house and was securely anchored in the ground several inches with a long metal stake. This item will be shipped in two seperate boxes. The glass ball will be shipped seperately and insured. Due to the ... morelength of the rod. It will be classified as a large and irregular package. This is a very charming Weather Vane featuring a Piglet which I bought in New Hampshire years ago. West of Nashua, near Milford Circle. It also served originally as a lightning rod. I removed the bottom end of the vertical supporting rod which had the remnants of the cables attached and placed the wooden block to give the rod its original height. ANTIQUE c.1900 CAST IRON and COPPER WEATHER VANE ARROW 28 1/2" LENGTH Great old cast iron weather vane directional arrow. Figural arrow has a center double loop where it can be placed on a lightening rod or pole. The opposing end of the arrow is thick copper and was made so an animal or figure could be mounted to it. The cast iron arrow and copper rod are riveted together in the center. This appears to be all original and is all very old but solid and free of cracks or damage. This is a very interesting and vigorous Weather Vane topper I bought years ago near Nashua. New Hampshire. It features an Eagle Rampant; that is, an Eagle in the attack position. It is a peculiarly American design and one which has been used in times of war. I believe this Eagle dates form the late 1800's. The previous owner thought he dated from the early 1800's; I think he is a little later. But I may be mistaken. A similar design sold recently by one of the large auction houses in New York. The body of our Eagle is made of thick sheet iron; the top spike and ball are copper. The body of the Eagle is bolted to a hollow supporting ... morerod which I believe is brass. The whole figure has been gilded. There appear to be some traces of an undercoat of a mustard color which was sometimes used on these older vanes so that when the gilding started to wear it would not be so obvious when viewed from the ground. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Eagle is 30 1/2 inches tall and 24 inches wide. The Eagle himself is 19 1/4 inches tall from his talons to the top of his wings and 24 inches long from the point of his beak to the back of his tail feathers. The gilding is worn and a few of the small points of the tail feathers are slightly bent. But other than this, the Eagle is in pretty good shape. The bolts are still strong and secure and there are no structural issues. The photos give an excellent idea of this example of a particularly American design for a Weather Vane. Here's a Great Antique 19th Century American Running Horse Weathervane with Copper Body and Cast Iron Head. Offered at NO RESERVE! The weathervane measures approximately 24 and 1/4" long and stands about 15" tall. For the age and use it's in Very Good Condition; it has a variegated verdigris and rust patination which to me looks phenomenal. The head is rusty but solid, and there appear to be several filled holes here and there. Under the head the seam is split somewhat but that could be repaired. Of course there are dents, dings, and so forth, but nothing I would rate as being negative. As far as the history, it came off a barn in Fair Haven, NJ, which was built in the 1870s, and remained in the same family until I acquired it recently. AAFA 19th Century Full Bodied Copper and Iron "Ethan Allen" Horse Weathervane
Full Bodied Running Horse Weathervane This is a copper molded full bodied"Ethan Allen" weathervane with a cast iron head. The surface is wonderful- a vibrant chrome yellow paint which was the sizing. Or undercoat, for what once would have been a gilded surface- worn off by weather and exposure. Areas of verdigris show through, making the overall effect interesting and beautiful. Ethan Allen was a champion Morgan horse trotter. Renowned in the Racing Hall of Fame, and a horse that you see in many Currier and Ives prints. This and many other vanes of the late 1800's were derived from the Currier and Ives images. The relatively small size of this one makes it special- 30" from the tip of the tail to the foremost leg. 17 1/2" from the ear to the cross piece, a perfect size for display. It appears that this vane. Like many ... moreof its era, was shot at. Pictures 8,9,11 show what look to be filled bullet holes- I believe these repairs were done a long time ago, judging from the verdigris on and around them. There are some intermmitant seam separations on the back(picture 3) belly(picture 6) and chest(picture 5) and minor denting. The iron head appears to have been smoothed due to inevitable rust with some kind of filler- hard to tell- with some in-painting. Most of the vibrant chrome yellow paint appears to be original- the bits of brighter yellow here and there are not as stable as the rest and may have been added later. That said, the surface is striking, with the wonderful color interspersed with the verdigris of the copper showing through. There is no stand. Great sculptural shape. Exceptional detail to the mane(picture 10) and tail(picture 12) No breaks(except for the seam separations as noted above) or missing parts. Found in New Hampshire, it dates from the late 1800's. Old Victorian Era Iron & Copper SHINN Lightning Rod Weathervane Farm Hardware
Here we have an old lightning rod. This was recently removed off a Southern Ky. barn. Stand is a unique W.C.SHINN 4-legged double braided style. This style is older and goes back to the Lincoln. Neb. days. It is 36" tall and has all of it's original looped style feet. Later style of this stand has the flat foot with 2 nail holes. Rod is a 5/8" copper tube style rod. The bottom cable connector is missing but this is a part that can be easily found. Rod has the slip on shell style tip. Rod and stand has some silver roof paint and lots of nice bright green patina. I'll have to bend the legs in close to ship it but they'll bend back with no problem. Very nice old rod.

There is no horse, roster pig or what ever, what you see is what you get. Add the figure of your choice. The rod measures 3/4 diameter. And 40" long. The large copper ball measures 4" diameter The smaller copper ball measures 2 1/4" diameter The E-W and N-W indicators letters measure 3 3/4" H x 2 3/4" W. And the length is 17" for each one. WEATHER VANE: Antique Banneret. Gilded Iron. Copper& Brass, 22.5" x 23" This is a wonderful old Banneret Weather Vane which I found years ago west of Nashua. New Hampshire, near Millford Circle. I don't know the maker or its age for sure. I might guess it dates to the early 1900's or late 1800's It is made almost entirely of Iron. The four flowers are copper and I believe the ball at the top is brass. There is a coat of dark or black paint under the gilding on the iron parts. And there is some verdigris which has developed on the flowers and ball a the top As it stands now on its wooden base. This Vane is 22 1/2 inches stall and 23 inches long. The wooden base adds another inch and a half. There is a newer steel support rod which runs up through the whole and keeps it together. On the whole this Banneret is in pretty ... moregood condition and displays beautifully The photos give a very good idea of the form and condition of this great old Weather Vane. Antique Copper/ Iron Trotting HORSE Weather Vane This weather vane is old. I just can't say for sure how old. It stands 20" tall and the base measures about 9" wide. The arrow measures 10" long. This weather vane seems to me to be copper and/or copper plate over iron. It is fairly heavy and as you can see in the photos, there is a distinct copper tarnish all over the piece which gives it a beautiful patina. There is also some surface rust present which might mean it has iron in the metal also. This item is in good condition, please see photos for more detail. This is a wonderful VINTAGE ANTIQUE LIGHTNING ROD. DIRECTIONAL WEATHERVANE WITH COUNTRY PRIMITIVE HOLLOW ROOSTER THAT HAS GREAT DETAIL. The weathervane was made for a barn or cupola and is circa 1900, if I had to guess. The directional rod seems to be cast iron, the lightning rod seems to be copper and the rooster is made of what, I think, is zinc. The weathervane is 34" tall and is 23" wide at the arrow. The bottom stand has 2 mounting holes for screws on each leg and the rooster is 10 1/4" tall and 7 1/2" wide. The weathervane is in very nice condition with a very small dent in the lightning rod and there might be a repair on the directional rod. There is a glob of something on it by the arrow. I cannot see what it is because of the paint so I am not sure. It might just be a weight. I have to say, that I did not notice ... moreit when I bought it years ago. The weathervane is a great piece of Americana and would made a great architectural addition to your home or it has many more years of being a weathervane. This 1930's lightning rod is in very good condition. It seems that the green patina on the copper rod has protected it from the elements very well. The iron mounting bracket is intact. In good condition and functional, but does have some pitting. The 4 1/2" pleated cobalt blue ball is flawless. The glass is clear(not fogged) no cracks or chips. There are rough spots at the hole(s) openings, but I think this is normal casting marks. There are no caps. The copper rod is 57" and the 3 leg mounting bracket is 35" My plan is to ship the glass ball seperatly from the lightning rod and mount.
