Please don't hesitate to make me on offer on this sweet old fugitive and tattered beauty; at this point I'd just like to see it be appreciated whether it's cut, stacked, washed and) snuggled. or maybe even boldly displayed in the perfect artfully grungy, post-industrial setting? I would date this quilt to the 1870's or a decade or two later. For all the pattern historians out there. While you're here. have you seen NYB sashings done this way before? The long slender sawteeth aren't equilateral triangles but nice elongated half-square rectangles. And they all share ... moreone orientation until they reach the midway point of the sashing. Then, after a single equilateral triangle for balance, they switch to the opposite orientation. Size The quilt measures about 67 x 77 inches. The eight-point-star rounds are 5 inches across and the sawtooth sashing points about 2 1/2 inches tall. Quilting The hand-quilting in various thread colors is fine and very thorough. With 6-8 little stitches to the inch. Counting on the top side of the quilt only. Construction The quilt is entirely handmade. Backing. Binding& Batting The backing fabric is much gauzier than the front and includes areas of complete disintegration with the batting bunching up and spilling out. There's very little binding remaining. The batting is super thin and even in places but also quite bunched up where it's exposed on the reverse. Condition You name a flaw. This little old quilt's got it. There's staining, water-staining, spotting, dye issues, surface wear, tears, fabric disintegration. etc. For what it's worth, I haven't washed it. There is some general age-wear to the case and the carry strap is missing but overall no major damage to case, with appealing patina. The ends are 6 1/4 inches wide by 6 1/24 inches tall. The 5 folded bellows are in very good order with no leaks. The bone buttons are all in good order- with the exception of one being missing. though easy to replace) All the others have good movement up and down and well set. Each button forms a different note when pressed in conjunction with bellow movement. They seem to be in good tuneful order but once again a professionals ear would need to confirm. One of the leather thumb loops is missing. The other is in good firm order. The complete makers label is present and reads: Louis Lachenal& Co patent Concertina London Manufactures. This machine has had no restoration done to it by us and is in the original condition we received it. It is a German import and was made by the Stoewer Bros in Stettin Germany between 1897& 1901. I find this to be a very interesting machine for several reasons. It has great history and very unusual art work including the Greek Goddess Athena. The Stoewer brothers also made automobiles in a place called Stettin Germany- Stettin no longer exists and is now part of Poland and is called Szczecin.
