ANTIQUE AMERICAN FOLK ART LIGHTING ROD/WEATHER VANE - MAN IN JALOPY
Just off a barn in central Iowa where it's stood for over 90 years. 55 1/2" Tall. Arrow with man in jalopy is 24 3/4" long with the car itself 10" long and 5" high. Car is aluminum. Arrow and 3 shafts to legs are cast iron and are weathered. No breaks. Lightning rod is copper which has verdigris with time. Only problem is the ring under the arrow has split. Does not affect it in any way. Could be replaced. This is"as found" condition with a great old surface from age and exposure. Very folk art in appearance. Would be a great addition to any lightning rod collection. Please ask me any questions you may have and thank you for looking at my auction.

ANTIQUE AMERICAN IRON 19th C FOLK ART WEATHERVANE TRADE SIGN CHIMNEY SWEEP W CAT Description: The BEST Antique American Iron Chimney Sweeper Folk Art Weathervane! Please'click' each individual image for enlargements of details including the great period construction and patina! Thanks! Dating circa 1880-1920. This wonderful piece of folk art was recently purchased by us out of an estate near Philadephia Pennsylvania. We concur with the former owners in the thought the vane was likely to have resided on a building which housed a chimney sweeping service in the Philadelphia area during the turn of the 19th century. This allowed the piece the service of acting as a trade sign as well as a weathervane. As you can see the profile of the piece is a striking sillohette of a chimney sweep. The personage bearing a period top hat, and sporting ... morea tailcoat. In the sweepers hands he holds the tools of his trade, a flue brush and a ladder. Another specific element of great folk art is the blacksmith who created this piece included the profile of a cat on the edge. Complete with pointed ears, and a charming curled tail. The construction of the piece showcases great original ironwork. The blacksmith formed out the design of the weathervane in flat iron. And reinforced the back with wrought strap iron support brackets including three areas where a rod could pass through(see images) Over the course of time. The piece was painted with several layers of paint, mostly in shades of green. If you click the individual images you'll see you can produce enlargements which allow for a better presentation of the surface and original construction. You'll see that overtime and exposure to the elements the paint has flaked on the piece creating a wonderul'alligatored' finish. The metal beneath the paint. Also exposed over decades has pitted at some areas, creating a wonderful patina. One of the other aspects that make this one of the best examples we've ever encountered is the size. The piece looks to have been originally a red with possibly some yellow areas(perhaps the remains of old lettering from the estate in which it was used) And later a darker brown. From exposure to the elements the paint has chipped in areas leaving a great patina, and truly wonderful old folk art character. Some slight areas of pitting from age. Weathering to the paint, but all in all a very good example of period folk art, and one that's sure to make a commanding presentation in any collection or decorum. I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa late 1800s to early 1900s American Folk Art Sheet Metal Cut Out Silhouette HORSE WEATHERVANE. It is Fresh off the Farm. Picked out of an old granary. It measures approx 31" long, approx 26" tall and is made of two cut out and riveted together pieces of sheet metal. The vane is fully guaranteed as being authentic. Dating from somewhere approx. 1900 give or take. It was purchased off of an old family farm here in Wisconsin, I've been trying to by it for over 20 years. Really Nicely Done. Unknown maker probably done by a local tinsmith back in the day. I think that its a fantastic looking item. Perfect for a wall décor or to have a stand made with a rod for proper display. No roosters or horses here, this is a nice antique car formed out of tin and mounted on a vertical pole with direction cross members. The cross members have the compass directions also cut from tin. I'm not sure of the model car but it has a long sleek body. Possibly a sedan of sorts, tin spoke wheels a formed headlights and a double ball hood ornament. There is a stud in the base of the car for mounting on the compass pole. Good antique condition with original green-grey patina. It is a Sperm whale on a stand with the letters N. S, W, and E for directions of the wind. It is hand made of copper and has the original natural patina and greenish/blue coloration from oxidation. This is not marked. ITEM MEASUREMENTS The stand for the weather vain measures 41 1/8" high. 18" wide, and 18" deep. The whale measures 23" long. 2" ... morewide, and 8 3/4" high. Above: the open seam that needs soldering. THIS ITEMS CONDITION REPORT This weathervane needs a repair. The whale is split at the bottom and does not fully sit on the stand. This has and has natural old surface oxidation. Which has great color. The stand itself is rusty. And there is a dent in the bottom bulb on the stand, shown in photos. This Patchen trotter weathervane is modeled after a painting by American artist John Cameron who was popular in the late 1800's. This painting was used to make a Currier and Ives lithograph. This is considered to be a very well balanced weathervane with a highly detailed head as compared to weathervanes modeled after the horse Black Hawk. WEATHER VANE: Antique Cockerel. American, Gilded Copper. 23"Tall x 15"Wide, 1800's This is a wonderful old Weather Vane featuring a Cockerel. I believe he is is made of copper and brass. He was gilded. But much of the gold has worn away. The supporting rod is particularly well made. This Cockerel came from a disassembled and demolished Convent Chapel in Bristol. Rhode Island when the Convent was sold to a developer. The man I bought him from told me that the Convent had been a fixture of the community since the 1800's, so I assume the Cockerel dates from the same time period. This type of Weather Vane with a Cockerel was a frequent feature of churches and chapels. A papal edict in the 9th century was responsible for the proliferation of Cockerels. Or Weathercocks, as they were also called, on churches. This edict required ... moreevery Church in Christendom to be mounted by a Cockerel. This symbol was to recall Peter's betrayal of Jesus(Luke 22:34) I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before you will deny three times that you know me" Although only the symbol of the cockerel was required by the edict, the motif, it seems, was quickly wedded with the weather vane. By the 13th century the word for weathercock(gallum) and weather vane(ventrologium) had become interchangeable. Interestingly, early Weathercocks, like this one, did not include cardinal letters, as Christian churches always lay east to west. This Cockerel stands 23 inches tall on his wooden base. He is beautifully cut from a sheet of copper and seems to be the work of a local craftsman. Rather than a mass produced Weather Vane. I believe the supporting rod and finial are brass. The whole was gilded but much of the gilding has worn away revealing patches of verdigris and old copper. When I acquired him. He was filthy, so I cleaned him with mineral water. On the whole. This incredible handmade weathervane is made of s heet iron with hand riveted forged iron flattend iron rod braces. It originates from the state of Kansas and was atop a barn during the late 1800’s. The owners moved to San Diego California in the early 1940’s and the weathervane went along with them where it set atop an out building and there it remained until 1995 when the matriarch passed away at the age of 105. It was then the weathervane was acquired along with many other family treasures. By the niece. The niece and family recently had an estate sale to clear out many items that is where I found this great piece of history. It measures 42” tall overall by 26” wide at the widest. The hunter is 21” tall the dog is 7” tall. It is made of sheet iron and iron pipe and is hand riveted. The base is iron and is 4” wide and slopes 6” downward ... moreon each side. Up for your consideration is this excellent antique molded copper and cut tin weather vane. We see this figural cow weathervane still has its original gilt surface. We see no signs of additional painting on this piece. We do see some areas where the gilt has worn away exposing the bare metal which has oxidized giving a great patina(see photos) We see the arrow tip and flech are made of cut tin or copper.
