The actual hinge portion measures 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Marking on the back says 4 1/2 x 4 1/2. Please note that these are ornamental pieces. Not a complete hinge set. condition: worn. Up for sale: Hinges and beautiful thumb latch. Architectural salvage. These were taken from the same door. The detail is incredible. We have never come across or even seen a thumb latch like this one. We only know this was from a home from early 1900's. A great piece for the collector.

The 4 x 4" size were often reserved for use on the main front door of a Victorian home. Likely cast in the last 1880's to the early 1900's. The fancy decorations are also on the back of the hinges. The hinges have some of their original black paint. They are 5 5/8" long from steeple tip to steeple tip and they are 4" wide. The pins are loose and removable. It is slightly bent, and extended up beyond where it should sit. On the other, the tip is also extended up, and the bottom of the steeple has a large chip. 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" overall open size 5 configured but can provide up to 12 using finials from the rights- Left hinges Door Knob on right In-swing and 14 configured but can provide up to 19 using finials from the lefts- Right hinges Door Knob on left In-swing The price is for ONE hinge- either left or right! Some doors are heavy enough to require 3 hinges- others are not. For a lift-off door application. You would need to use at least 2 hinges of the same type. Look at the pictures carefully to see that these are made from 2 pieces of the same leaf but the pin is placed in only one of them. Because of the wear over the years. You will have to add washers or some sort of bearing spacer like that used in small electric motors. These washers are fairly easy to find at the local hardware store but may have that bright zinc plating. These ... morecan be darkened easily using a"gun bluing" solution. The right hinge shown has one installed while the left one does not and shows the typical wear amount. These antique hinges have been mostly cleaned of some of the paint/varnish/shellac that was on them but there might be some residue left on them and rust on most of them as shown in the pictures. All the pins are free as seen in the pictures showing them disassembled. The steeple tips/tops are nickel plated but most of that plating is gone. The top tips screw out easily on some of these but I haven't tried to remove the bottom ones- maybe some heat would help them unscrew. The body was originally japanned/painted black but that too is mostly gone.

This hardware is absolutely beautiful! I can't say enough about how striking this would look in any home. Old or new! You are bidding on 3 pair of heavy bronze Victorian period 5" Steeple Top Door Hinges(6 hinges in total) 3 matching Bronze Door Knob Escutcheons or Plates, and 3 matching Bronze Lock Escutcheons with Swinging Covers. All pieces are ornamentally cast, and are just impeccable. The steeple design hinges are 5" measuring 5" in width and length. The overall length from the tip of top to the tip of the bottom steeple is 8 1/4" The 40 brass wood screws which came with this hardware goes with the lot. Each hinge is stamped on the reverse side with the size(5 x 5) and the Jan 18. 1870 patent date. The back side of the hinges also have a floral design in the casting, which is indicative of the highest quality ... morehardware manufactured during that period. This hardware was salvaged from a old local estate. And each piece is in great condition. Some pieces need a little cleaning, but there is no damage to any of them. The steeple on the hinges incorporate an ornately cast floral design which finish with an acorn finial on the top and bottom. All are fine- no damaged or flattened tips, no breaks or cracks, no marred or scarred surfaces. The door knob escutcheon plates are in great condition with finely crafted details. All are flat. And again no breaks, cracks, etc. The lock escutcheons are equally fine. The covers swing freely. And they show very minimal signs of use. If you're looking for historic hardware for renovation of an old home. Or if you're incorporating the quality and beauty of antique hardware in a new construction project, you'll not be dissatisfied.
