Offered for Auction: Rare set of 4 Old Hand Forged Iron Soldier Style Shutter Dogs. The dogs feature a large lag screw and a long cylindrical shaft and spade shaped tail with a hole in order to secure it to the house. The iron has been japanned with black enamel and repainted at some point over the years. However it has flaked and worn off due to weather exposure. I am uncertain if they can be reused, however they would make a nice template for new ones to be fabricated from. I am uncertain of their age or origin but they could have been forged here in New England. Condition: Fair to Poor given their age. All of the dogs have surface rust. They are scratched and discolored from use and age. They are misshapen and bent as shown. These type of hinges are made so the shutter can be lifted off for cleaning or painting. Also once the shutter is opened it"locks" by dropping down in a notch so it has to be lifted slightly to close. I believe these are called Shepard hinges from what I could find in a turn of the century hardware catalog, or at least similar to that type. The shutter dogs have hammer marks and joints in the iron from the blacksmith. This rare set of shutter stays have their original paint. It is chipped and rustic and would give an air of history. They are the hammer in type that were in brick. Stone, or the wood siding on a house. These are not reproductions! They were likely hand made in the late 1800's. I have discovered they were shutter dog/hinges. amongst other interesting. Related do dads, from same lot. they measure appox 3 1/2" long. i used the quarter to show help gauge sizes of the various pcs. the camera panned the same'lot' in the same place.i did not move any pcs for the multiple close ups. they seem strong(altho i did not try to hammer them into anything! and not delicate or brittle. plz view photos. I recently acquired these at an estate sale and they were bought attached to a display board. I hit the pieces with a dry scrub brush and easily knocked most of the surface rust off. Antique Forged Iron Shutter Hardware 2 Dogs and 18 Pintels
Off my former 1790 in house in Connecticut. Is a lot of antique shutter hardware. The 2 shutter dogs have their original bolts and are in good shape. The scroll part measures 6 ½" long. Back of bolt measures 3¾" long. The threaded part of bolt is 2 ½" long. Not much cleaning up is needed. 16 of the pintels appear to be forged iron. Some have been cleaned. Others are encrusted. Upright is 1 ¼ +/ Threaded section is 1 ½" 2 pintels appear to be cast& have a brass finish. Shipping weight is 2 lbs/3 oz.

Antique Window Shutter Dogs hardware Cast Iron Grapes Set lot of 10 matching
This antique lot of 10 shutter dogs is probably circa late 1800's or turn of the century. They are rustic cast iron grape formations. They are all the same size. Approx. 5.5 inch long and 2.75 wide. The hex bolts are shorter on three of the dogs. Eight are a complete set of 4 lefts and 4 rights. One pair of left and right have the shorter hex bolts and the two bolts are slightly different lengths. The remaining two shutter dogs are both singles. These are primarily a deep forest green paint currently as found over the cast iron works with some other paint from the years here n there. The rods are rustic as well.
