It was dirty and white looking till I washed it and gave some vegetable oil for preservation. The colors just came alive and it has to be the most beautiful wooden bowl I have ever seen and I have seen many. The bowl stands about 3 inches tall measures about 10 1/2 inches in diameter on average because it is slightly oval. It has been used and shows wear and does some small age cracks. I believe the wood is flaming birch because it is not heavy like curly or tiger maple. Please view all the pictures carefully as they are a important part of the description. The outside bottom has some wood shrinkage. Scratches, and wood shrinking which has started a groove that has started a very thin shrink line on the bottom see pic. Great Lakes Indian Woodlands Burl Bowl, c.1790, full of old knife chopping marks
Here is a nice antique Native American Burl Bowl measuring 17" dia. x 5" high. It is an ash burl bowl from the later 18th century or possibly early 19th century. Is an early lathe turned bowl with early features of a heavy rim. And a pronounced"secondary" embossed ring midway down the side changing the form of the bowl. It does have an old repair/fill where a knot hole probably occurred, and has one minor age crack in the rim. Note it is full of old knife chopping marks inside. Vintage Munising 2nd Wooden Bread Dough And Chopping Bowl
Munising Woodware Company was productive from 1911 until 1955. It was located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the town of Munising. Local maple trees were typically used and the bowls were often sold in department stores. Based on the marking. This bowl was probable made in the late 1930's or early 1940's. This bowl was issued a factory 2nd because of the defect in the wood, on the outside of the bowl. See photo. This defect is approximately 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. This defect was probably from a knot in the raw wood prior to turning. This bowl is 4 1/2 inches tall. With a 14 1/4 inch inside diameter and a thickness of 1/2 inch at the top rim. The chopper which came with the bowl has a wooden handle. The chopper is 6 inches long and 5 inches tall. Feel free to ask any questions.

This large Munising bowl is off-round. 15-1/4" x 14-1/2" it is 5" high and 1/2" thick. Munising bowls were made in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, usually from maple trees growing in local forests. This bowl has been in my family since the 1940s or 50s. The bowl was always used for either chopping or rising bread dough. The wood grain is visible inside and outside, and turning marks can also be seen. The bowl is signed on the bottom. There are circular lines on the back from being hand turned( a guess as I am not an expert) There is a lip at the top. The patina is irregular which I think gives it character. Here is a great find for any wood lover. Here are 5 wooden bowls that have been in the family for over 50 years. There are 2 sizes. There is a single large chopping/dough bowl that is almost 16 inches across and over 5 inches deep. It has no cracks and is not varnished and has no finish. It is 5/8 of an inch thick for extreme durability. There are also 4 bowls that are 8 inches in diameter. They are also not varnished and have no finish. They are not heavy for their size so they are not oak but I'm really not sure on the type of wood. The set of 5 bowls weighs 7 pounds 10 ounces with the largest bowl weighing over 4 pounds by itself.
