This is a very interesting piece with hand carved mother of ... morepearl inlays of flowers on twisted inlaid silver wire stems. The top has a small ornate silver plate for engraving the owner’s monogram. But it has never been engraved, although someone has lightly scratched their initials there. The hinges are intact and in fine working condition. The inside of the lid has a red velvet lining. Where the lid and box go together. It is lined with faux ivory. The caddy has two compartments with matching lids. The bottom of the box is covered with a dark covered floral embossed paper. The top. Back, front, and base of the box are sectioned off by silver flat wire. You can tell a lot of effort and highly skilled workmanship went into making this Tea Caddy of great quality for its time. This two compartment Tea Caddy sits on four round ball feet and measures a little over five inches high. About eight inches long, and about five inches wide. It weighs about 503 grams. Due to its great vintage age it does have condition issues. And could probably use a very good restoration from an expert. There are cracks on the top. Front, back, and sides. There are chips of material gone on the front. Base, sides, and back. Some of the flat silver sectioning wire looks bent and some looks to be missing. One of the hand engraved mother of pearl flower petals. Under the front lock plate, is missing. Both of the compartment lids have chips with material missing. And the compartment linings and lock mechanism are gone. The item might be used as your jewelry box if you did not want to restore it as a Tea Caddy. It is also the most beautiful grain caddy and box i have ever seen. The caddy is beautifully crafted in'English Wych Figured Elm' just a magnificent cut of this very fine. Rare wood. I will let the pictures do the talking here. The caddy is in wonderful authentic condition. The sliding canister tops slide smoothly and have the words, green' and'black' on them. The brass is bright and looks like gold. The interior of the canisters still show a lot of the zinc lining. This caddy has been phenomenally looked after. Come with original key and the lock works well. The caddy has been carefully cleaned and lightly polished so the figured elm grain looks supreme. He was famous for his top class topographical tunbridge ware of Eridge Castle and various flowers and butterflies. This tea caddy is a very fine example of his work at its best and shows both a stunning portrayal of Eridge castle as well as various flowers. Edmund Nye was a renowned Tunbridge Ware maker. Who worked in Tunbridge Wells from 1809 until his death in 1863. Initially he was in partnership with William Fenner until 1817 and then continued in his own right, employing Thomas Barton as his foreman and designer in 1836. Edmund Nye had a reputation for good quality ... morework and he enjoyed royal patronage from 1836. He exhibited at The Great Exhibition in 1851and the judges were most impressed with his work awarding him the prize. The History of Tunbridge Ware) The top has a highly artistic portrait of Eridge Castle on a satin wood ground set on a beautiful grain coromandel base. There is a highly decorative floral border flowing around the waist of the caddy, again on a beautiful grain coromandel base. The grain of this coromandel is nothing short of stunning. Some of the finest i have ever seen in a caddy. The same goes for the very intricate tunbridge ware and foliage border. The wood has been cleaned and polished so the coromandel grain and contrasting tunbridge looks exquisite as can be clearly seen in the pictures. All other similar'castle' tunbridge caddies i can find for sale on google are rosewood NOT coromandel like this even rarer example is. ANTIQUE Early 1800's Large Triple Compartment ROSEWOOD TEA CADDY
This is an absolutely fabulous Antique Regency Rosewood Tea Caddy Box. This wonderful tea caddy is a genuine handmade antique from England and dates to the early 1800's. It is a very fine quality English antique in elegant rosewood and features custom interior compartments. The shape of the caddy is sarcophagus shape with original brass floral ring handles on either side. The caddy sits on it's original small bun feet. It is in very good condition with a lock. But no key. Tea was stored in the three-section interior consisting of 2 hinged removable wooden boxes for tea and an original handmade glass bowl for mixing. There is a beautifully intricate hunter green velvet lining on the inside of the hinged lid. I have only seen one like it and it was valued at $6.800! Hunter green velvet also lines the bottom of the box. It is in very ... moregood condition for its age and everything is original. The only addition is a fresh polish! I have not noticed any blemishes; only that the lid does not sit 100% flush on the left side. It is not loosely hinged. So I don't want to attempt to force it or unscrew anything, as everything is original. It's not very noticeable as you can see from the pictures. And may be a very simple fix.
