This chest measures 48 inches wide by 18 inches deep by 17 inches high. When opened. You are greeted with the fresh scent of natural cedar as a shelf rises up and away for easy access to the chest below. Based on the serial number. The manufacture date was April 21, 1954. I received the chest in the early-to-mid 70s and had it professionally refinished with a walnut stain in 1979. Some of the grain is slightly raised on the front(as seen in the picture) Several pictures were taken under different lighting conditions. There are a few very minor scratches. But overall it is in very good condition. IMPORTANT: As per the requirements of the Consumer Products Safety Commission. A new replacement lock has been obtained from The Lane Company and the original pushbutton removed. This item comes from a smoke-free. This beautiful PENNSYLVANIA blanket chest belonged to my great uncle. He was a huge collector of antiques! My husband and I love this piece. But we are such huge collectors ourselves we simply do not have the room for it anymore. I tried to find out the how, when and where of this piece, but was only able to get a little info. My grandfather(his brother) said he had it in his collection since he was married, so that was between 1930-1940. He loved estate sales and auctions, so I am assuming that is where he first purchased it. He pretty much didn't travel at all, so I would bet this came from an estate around 1930-1940 and in the area of Somerset, Westmoreland, Fayette or Bedford county PA. He lived in Indian Head PA-if you want to Google the area) My grandfather said it was always in his living room but you would never notice because ... morethey kept a blanket over it to protect it. This piece is mid to late 1800s at least.it may be earlier than that. My husband is a dairy farmer but also builds furniture on the side. He added the base. When we got this piece it had no base. But he tried to match it with the time period. He loves Soap Hollow furniture and tried to match it to that type of look. It also has a small section on the top/lid that has been repaired(early repair, not by my husband)pics 3& 11. The hinges were replaced at some point as you can see in pic 10-to the left of the hinge you can see the original nails used. It is old and not perfect.but it shouldn't be it is from the 1800s. I did my best with the photos, but obviously it has some dings and scratches here and there, so please look over the photos well, they are part of the description. Excellent blanket chest! 1800s Blanket/Hope Chest "Dovetail Construction"
This is an exceptional piece of Early American Furniture. And is in very good condition for its age, 1800's) would be a best guess. All I did is give it a rub down with Lemon Oil which really brought out the natural graining in the wood. It does have a few small drops of green color paint on the top and small scratches which would easily come off with a light sanding but I did not want to do anything to the original finish. The top, front and two sides are all made from a single piece of lumber which appears to be Chestnut. The back and bottom are both made from two planks of what appears to be Cedar. I have this listed as local pick-up only but let me know if you need it shipped and you can arrange for a trucking company to pick it up. This chest is hewn from solid elm hardwood that is thicker than any chest I've seen. And the thicker the boards the more bold the dovetails. Dimensions are about 22" high. 38" wide& 23-1/2" deep. This piece was made for some serious treasure, perhaps it was made so thick that people wouldn't easily walk off with it and its presumably valuable contents. The craft. MAGNIFICENT"MOTHER OF ALL BLANKET CHESTS" GIGANTIC DOVETAILED SIX-BOARD-BOX õ Actually I think this heroic trunk is an Indonesian Dowry Chest. Or Javanese Storage Trunk(or" Grobog" in Bahasa) To my knowledge. These were the most spectacular, titanic dovetailed chests made anywhere at any time. Each side of this chest is a single gigantic slab of Teak. Cut by hand from the giant Teak trees that once were plentiful in the region. This is the Real Deal, a now rare form, and a magnificent example. The work in this piece is astounding. Every incredibly wide board is hand-planed. Revealing the rich, dark ripple of the aged teak through the subtly faceted carving. The moldings are hand-planed into the boards. The magnificent dovetails seem almost large enough to be a log cabin, the carvings lovely and tasteful subtle coloration ... moreto the wood rich& warming. The iron work is tremendous, robust, aged, hand-forged& intense. And as was the tradition, it's on these really great, large, built-in solid teak wheels! The top slab measures an incredible nearly 25" wide by 36" long in a single slab. Overall height is about 36-1/2" There are two handy compartments inside. One the full height of the interior and one with space underneath. I've been a collector of dovetailed chests for many years& I've collected some absolute beauties. This one is about the most heroic single-slab six-board box I've seen. The Indonesian Grobog chests can be very ornately carved& painted with striking colors. Indonesia is known for its amazing tradition of woodworking and crafts. I like that this one is much more simple& plain than most. And that the aged wood is allowed to be the most prominent surface. Indonesian chests like this are getting very rare. There was a time back in the 1990's when great containers of Indonesian Antiques were being shipped over. This is an absolutely gorgeous chest. The dimensions are a massive 58 1/2" long X 27' tall X 25" deep. The quartersawn graining shows beautifully through the washed green paint on the lid. Just an amazing piece that is even more impressive in person. I believe this miniature hope chest dates from the 19th century! It is in EXCELLENT condition overall with minor surface wear to the wood and a few VERY MINOR gaps in the wood! There is evidence of it having been repaired with some glue on the bottom! I believe this is an older repair that was done at the time that the felt lining was added to the interior tray and compartment! The felt lining has two slim gaps along the edge in the tray which was how the felt was installed! Otherwise the felt in both the tray and compartment are intact with no holes and very minor soiling! Approx. 10.5" X 5.5" at the base 7.5" tall! The tray is approx. 9" X 4" and I believe the bottom piece of the tray is a replacement! The well is approx. 3.5" deep below the tray! DOLL HOPE CHEST - HANDMADE 1896 WEST TN.- RED CEDAR - LARGE - VICTORIAN
INTRODUCTION: This wonderful dolls' chest has been in my family since 1895. It was made on the farm in west Tennessee and presented to my grandmother's first daughter Patti Rogers Halliburton. She died of diptheria when she was thirteen years old. Before my mother was born. Although it was used by my mother, then by me and then by my daughter, it is still known as Patti Rogers' chest. PARTICULARS: Every inch of the chest is red cedar and it has that wonderful aroma of that particular tree. Even after 119 years. To build it, the craftsman used nails, screws and glue. There are a couple of contemporary Victorian touches like the Empire additions on each side of the front and the over-hanging lid- very unusual. It is sturdy and true, attested by it's shape after three generations of use. There is not a wobble, squeak or lose ... morenail and the wood is very think. Except for the varnish crazing, mostly on the top, it is glass smooth. The small splinter of wood missing on the top overhang, right side, is not noticeable. It is large for a dolls' chest, measuring outside 18 inches long, 9 5/6 inches wide and 8 7/8 inches high. Inside measurements are 16 5/8 inches long, 8 1/4 inches wide and 6 9inches deep. It weighs a hefty 5 pounds, 5.7 ounces. NITTY-GRITTY: I mail on the next business day after receiving payment using either FedEx or USPS. I DO NOT ship to P.O. boxes. I insure every item costing more than $24.00 at my expense. If an insured item is damaged. The buyer would need to contact the carrier to file a claim. I do not charge a handling fee.
