French Empire Mahogany Marble Top Commode Chest Dresser with Gilt Mounts c. 1805

Description: This listing is for a 19th Century French Empire Period Mahogany Marble Top Ormolu Mounted Commode. Circa 1805. It is a fascinating work of art, constructed in three parts- first the marble, which is extremely heavy at just over an inch thick(1 1/16" thick) the top of the chest with the top drawer, and the bottom of the chest with the lower three drawers. Lifting the marble reveals the construction of the topmost portion. Each of the front corners with a full gallery of hand cut dovetails that lock the top into the thick corners. All of the secondaries are solid oak, joined with large pegged tenons along the frame, this large thick top joining the lower case with thick through-tenon wedged mortise joints- by ... morepulling out the wedge, the tenon drops out of the top portion, freeing it from the lower case. This lifts away from the case as long as the columns are not nailed at the top. The top drawer features the most incredible gilt ormolu mounts. Cast with stunning attention to even the smallest detail. Horizontal curled anthemions flank a seated angel, inscribing in a blank scroll. With wings furled behind, detailed even down to the tiniest feather, the angel rests with legs slightly bent as the robe flows from his legs, a trumpet peering out from behind him. Over either columnar support, gilt ormolu mounts of angels flank the top drawer, the figure on the right peering towards the sky with a globe behind him, the angel on the left sitting on a carefully crafted French Empire chair reading a scroll. The turned columns on either side rest on square plinths. Capped at the top and bottom with gold gilt flamed mounts, finely detailed throughout. Three drawers slide in and out of the case, each hand dovetailed front and back with solid oak secondary woods making up the frame and bottoms. Up for your consideration is this nice antique French three drawer locking jewelry chest. This wonderful chest has great attention to detail when the inlay was done. The gold gilded ormolu accents include the key hole surrounds and also the door pulls that each hold a different hand painted Sevres style porcelain disc for each pull. This chest is in excellent condition. You can tell the age by the toning of the underside wood. Like you see on the antique shows where you scratch your fingernail on the oxidized wood. It leaves a distinct mark that shows age that cannot be replicated. The only thing I see wrong is that the original key is not present. Just a trip to your local antique co-op should remedy this. The primary wood and veneers appear to be walnut or a similar hardwood with what appear to be oak and pine/poplar secondary woods. Dimensions: 12.25" high x 17" wide x 9.75" deep. Weight: 11 lbs. Up for sale is this antique French Louis wood parquetry ice chest. It comes from a weathy Conn estate and is a wonderful piece. The hand jointed veneers are outsatnding and in very good condition. There are 2 original brass(missing 2 small screws) handles that lift the top which leads to a metal ice tray/planter. The top is accented in a reticulated brass edge as well as the base top. There are brass ormulus at the feet. At the sides there is a wonderful carving accent. It is in overall very good condition. There are some areas where the detailed wood edges need to be clued as seen in the picture. It measures 26" x 16" x 31" The cooler measures 22" x 12" Thanks for looking! A French Steamer Trunk with White Star Line sticker on the exterior. We are pleased to present this antique French Steamer Trunk for your consideration. It belonged to a G. Pellissier. And has many indications of extensive use, including a White Star Line sticker on the exterior. The original label from the shop in Paris. France where it was purchased is still attached to the underside of the lid in the interior, and is in pretty good shape. The Trunk measures 13 inches high. 40 inches wide, and 23 inches deep. It weighs 36 pounds. The trunk shows heavy wear to the exterior fabric. And is worn through in places down to the underlying wood. Despite heavy wear, the structure is solid. Heavy brass corner protectors show a heavy patina, along with some dents, but have done their job to protect the wooden frame. Pieces of the leather straps on ... moreboth ends remain, but the leather is in poor shape. The interior fabric shows water stains, and is torn in places. The bottom appears to be made of tin, and is in good shape. Metal latches and fasteners show a heavy patina. We rate the overall condition of the Trunk as fair to good. This is a nice example of an antique Steamer Trunk. It would make a great decorative or historical display piece. Or candidate for a full restoration! Do you live in the Los Angeles area? Spectacular hand carved-artist signed-French chest--nursery fable---14998
I believe this is the finest carved 19th century French chest or trunk I have ever offered for sale. Sometimes called a marriage chest or mothers chest. This piece is very finely hand carved in the Black Forest tradition. Note the front panel of chest is elaborately relief carved with a scene from a Jean de la Fontaine fable L'ane et Le Chien(The Donkey& the Dog)would be a charming addition to any child's room. The top panel is incised carved with a coat of arms featuring a stag and a lion flanking a shield. Piece retains the original metal strap hinges and side handles. The chest is further adorned with an acorn& oak leaf pattern& figural carvings. Chest is Signed and dated by the maker, C H. Trenckle Sculp. 1885. Nice manageable size at 22 high 44 5/8 long and 16 1/2 deep. The piece is in overall excellent condition ... morewith just some minor loses-interior is clean and without odor.
