It's unmarked as to maker. I think it's likely circa early to mid-1900s. I believe it's in original condition. It has one interior. Multi-sectioned drawer on hinges(in need of minor repair-see below) It's constructed of walnut veneer with cedar lining, and secondary hardwood(s) The back is unfinished. Wonderful for storage and display or seating, it's both beautiful and superbly useful. CONDITION: Overall. I think it's in nice vintage condition. Solid and sturdy. Only the tiniest bit of veneer loss that I can see: a few tiny chips along the back edge. Minor nicks, imperfections normal to vintage furniture. It does have some flaws: 1) the top surface has superficial scratches and age-related splits in the veneer(but they seem shallow enough to me that I think just polyurethane(were the top refinished) and/or a walnut-tone pore filler would be enough to fill them for a flawless(or nearly so) top. 2) In the interior. Lid, left side, the wood affixing the screw supporting the pull-out shelf is stripped(please see photos; the drawer is just propped in place in the photo) so is in need of this repair. I'd probably suggest filling the oversized hole with wood scraps and glue to fill, then redrilling the hole(possibly a larger screw would work) this is left to the buyer. 3) The locks on these old chests pose a safety hazard to children(won't open from within; children can suffocate inside) and can't be sold with the lock in place. I've removed and discarded it. Leaving just the hardware(for aesthetics) so it simply opens and closes, and can be opened from inside. This Roos chest was made in Forest Park. ... moreIL. The chest is made of Claro Walnut, Striped Walnut and Black Walnut. The inside of the chest is aromatic Red Cedar. The cedar chest is still quite aromatic, it has a special sealite lid to prevent the escape of the protective cedar fumes. The chest measures 47-1/4" long, it is 23" tall and 18-1/4" deep. It has a cedar tray on the inside which is 10" deep. The cedar chest is in excellent condition, the wood is rich and it gleams. On close inspection it shows a few vintage scuffs, mainly where the back edge would rub against the wall when opened, but nothing outstanding and it shows no abuse. The inside looks like new. There is a lock on the chest but I do not have a key. This chest comes from a smoke free and pet free home. It is clean and ready to use. Buyers are welcome to ask for other forms of payment. Local pick up is welcomed. I live in South Bend. Indiana close to Interstate 80. I would also be willing to deliver within 100 miles for a reasonable delivery fee. Or merchant's chest, dating from the Meiji Era around the mid to late 1800's, featuring a lock bar in the center and classical safe compartment at the bottom right. It boasts a natural light colour with a rich honey patina, beautifully shaped hand forged iron hardware, wood peg construction and 8 drawers of various sizes that provide versatile storage options including a full width drawer at the top. It is in excellent overall condition for it's age. But has a little lock issue: as there is no key and the top drawer lock is in the closed position with the drawer open it will not shut all the way. The safe compartment has a tendency to swing open by itself since there is no key to lock it. The lock issue does NOT affect the lock bar which slides in and out of place properly. Please read the description and examine the photos for more details on the condition. Locksmiths and larger antique dealers will own sets of multiple keys to fit a broad range of locks so you should be able to get the drawer unlocked easily enough so it slides into place. With a little patience you could also find an antique key that fits right here on ebay(I can recommend a seller who regularly stocks this type of item) Other small issues worth noting are a small repair in the bottom corner of the smallest drawer just above the safe compartment. The larger top drawer is stiff to open and close due to age and needs a tweak, and one corner plate in the back is bent out of shape. Small dovetailed joints with distinct un-matching groves validate the 1800's age I believe to be when it was made. A children's size red lacquer. Hand painted cedar trunk from circa 1880-1920. It has the Chinese dragon as well as the rooster. According to Chinese astrology t he Dragon and the Rooster are highly compatible due to their complementary differences. They do seem quite opposite in nature: The Dragon is fiery and exciting while the Rooster is practical. Even conservative; the Dragon operates on instinct while the Rooster relies heavily on planning. The Dragon is able to show the Rooster a good time, however, and can rely on the Rooster to bring it back down to earth when the Dragon flies too high. INTRODUCTION: This wonderful dolls' chest has been in my family since 1895. It was made on the farm in west Tennessee and presented to my grandmother's first daughter Patti Rogers Halliburton. She died of diptheria when she was thirteen years old. Before my mother was born. Although it was used by my mother, then by me and then by my daughter, it is still known as Patti Rogers' chest. PARTICULARS: Every inch of the chest is red cedar and it has that wonderful aroma of that particular tree. Even after 119 years. To build it, the craftsman used nails, screws and glue. There are a couple of contemporary Victorian touches like the Empire additions on each side of the front and the over-hanging lid- very unusual. It is sturdy and true, attested by it's shape after three generations of use. There is not a wobble, squeak or lose ... morenail and the wood is very think. Except for the varnish crazing, mostly on the top, it is glass smooth. The small splinter of wood missing on the top overhang, right side, is not noticeable. It is large for a dolls' chest, measuring outside 18 inches long, 9 5/6 inches wide and 8 7/8 inches high. Inside measurements are 16 5/8 inches long, 8 1/4 inches wide and 6 9inches deep. It weighs a hefty 5 pounds, 5.7 ounces. NITTY-GRITTY: I mail on the next business day after receiving payment using either FedEx or USPS. I DO NOT ship to P.O. boxes.
