Antique Cedar Trunk with Walnut Carved Design- From what I can see. This was hand made from Cedar with a walnut carved veneer overlay on front. Original lock and Key. Key is a single tooth, hollow barrel metal Skelton key. Hinges appear to be original, but I am not certain. Small dovetailed joints with distinct un-matching groves validate the 1800's age I believe to be when it was made. Another strong indicator is the patent number on the back solid panel dating it around 1844. This piece is not in perfect condition, but I would say PRETTY DARE GOOD! Beautiful antique oak trunk with hand carved ornamentation. Th original finish that was hand polished with 0000 steel wool and pastewax. It has a frame constructed of 7/8" thick oak with oak veneered panels. Bottom outside frame is carved with a nice detail. The medallion under the keyhole is a series of swirls. Flowers and leaves. The black metal strap hinges are stunning. Ball feet are 2 1/4" in diameter. The trunk measures 37" wide x 18 3/4" deep x 19" tall. Inside is 34 1/4" wide x 16 5/8" deep x 15 1/4" tall. There is no key so it's unknown if the lock works— it's marked"Secure 2 Lever" There are some marks from age and the veneer on the top is a little wavy. I believe this is the finest carved 19th century French chest or trunk I have ever offered for sale. Sometimes called a marriage chest or mothers chest. This piece is very finely hand carved in the Black Forest tradition. Note the front panel of chest is elaborately relief carved with a scene from a Jean de la Fontaine fable L'ane et Le Chien(The Donkey& the Dog)would be a charming addition to any child's room. The top panel is incised carved with a coat of arms featuring a stag and a lion flanking a shield. Piece retains the original metal strap hinges and side handles. The chest is further adorned with an acorn& oak leaf pattern& figural carvings. Chest is Signed and dated by the maker, C H. Trenckle Sculp. 1885. Nice manageable size at 22 high 44 5/8 long and 16 1/2 deep. The piece is in overall excellent condition ... morewith just some minor loses-interior is clean and without odor.
