Fabulous Primitive Vintage Rooster Chicken Weathervane Original Finish
Fabulous Primitive Vintage Rooster Chicken Weathervane Original Finish I am still listing new items from Indiana. And have a boatload of new things from the flea market too. Lots of primitive antiques, farm finds, folk art, and the usual wacky Maureen stuff- you don’t want to miss this week! What's not to love about an old weathervane- don'tcha love the look of them? And this one has character to spare! It's an older vintage weathervane- made from spelter. I'm guessing as it's a grey metal that a magnet does not stick to- except for the base, which is brass, and has mounting holes on the sides for mounting. It's a rustic rooster, with a black painted finish that is accented with deep barn red for the details on his head. The center pole has a hand hammered look. It stands 24" tall to the top of the rooster, and ... morethe directionals are 15 1/2" apart end to end n/s, e/w. The base measures 2 1/8" square. The whole piece weighs 4 lbs. It does come apart, the directionals can be removed, as can the rooster as you can see from my photos, the top of the pole sticks out of his back, and you just lift him off. I will dis-assemble him for shipping in order to make the box smaller and hopefully save you some dabloons. It's in excellent solid and sturdy condition, with rustic wear to the finish that can be see- lots of worn black paint esepcially on the rooster, where you can see down to the metal, as well as the highest relief spots on the directionals and poles- that's the charm about him, though- he's primitive, he's old, he's all original, he's yours! Antique Pheasant weather vane. Was on top of 4 unit apartment building I own. At one time building was a huge hen house, filled with the best egg laying chickens,or so I'm told.Building was converted into 4 unit apartments in 1955. About ten years ago I talked to a neighbor(he was about 80 then) he said he remembers that pheasant weather vane when it was a"chicken house" also said that a lot of weather vanes were chickens/roosters, but I guess the chickens didn't want their own kind, up there on the roof,then he laughed. Think its made out of aluminum& was hand painted, still see some of it. Hard to believe its that old, until you look at the metal screws, that's decades out in the weather.
