It is believed that the round tops were made for those who wanted to try to have their trunk packed on the top of baggage cars, so they would not be damaged. This trunk is in good condition. Obviously it will show wear marks from age. No key. Metal with wood slats. Original leather handles are broken/missing on one side. Nice Chromolithographs. Great graphics! Antique Trunk, Dome/Barrel Top, Ladies Saratoga, Late 1800s, not steamer trunk
Wow. Great old trunk! Late 1800s Seward Trunk& Bag Co. Ladies Saratoga Trunk" Otherwise known as a"Barrel Stave Top" or"Dome Top" This style of trunk is quite often mistakenly referred to as a steamer trunk; steamer trunks are a maximum of 14" tall and flat. A bit rough. Someone removed the lock portion of the main latch. It is an unusual double latch design. The compartment lid inside has broken and been repaired. Corner wear, some surface rust and oxidation. Leather handles broke off and were replaced with some very heavy duty brass handles a long time ago. The brass handles appear to be quite old. One of the cast strap clamps is broken yet all there. There is some damage to the tin clad skin. Original lining is cracked and torn in places. It appears to be all original with the exception of the handles ... moreand has not been painted(painting these trunks takes away from their value significantly) I'm sure I'm missing something so please look at the photos carefully and ask questions! Item is available for preview with appointment. I personally would leave it an unrestored original yet it could be restored bringing its value up. This would make a great display piece in your store, business or home. It has a covered hat/ glove compartment in the lid. Hardwood slats. The inside of the lid has the 2 original color chromo-lithographs; one depicting a man pushing a wheelbarrow with a woman and 3 children inside and the other is a woman pushing her daughter on a swing with a smaller picture of what appears to be ice skaters. Early 1870s Saratoga Trunk Antique Trunk
This trunk is an early 1870s Barrel Stave. Saratoga trunk. Originally embossed leather covered, but sadly it was beyond saving. The up-side is that the wood underneath is absolutely fantastic. Unlike most other trunks for sale, this one has a complete original interior. Lets start with the outside, 34" long, 21" wide, and 29" high. The iron bound corners, and 3 iron bands all have a not often found scalloped edging with 3 rows of nails. Total nails on this trunk are over 1,400, and all have been polished, masked, and painted around. Cast iron guide dowels are held on with copper rivets. A unique solid brass working lock with key. The leather straps, lid lifter, and handles have all been faithfully reproduced. The custom made(by me) handles are the largest I have seen at 10" long, 1 1/2 wide, and almost a 1/2 thick. The ... morebeautiful grooved oak slats are held on with tinned nails, and all have steel slat end protectors. The inside is no less amazing. Full bottom tray with covered set up tray. Parasol tray, and removable hat box. The removable hat box has 3 compartments with the front one having a fold down top. The lid has a fall in tray with securable top, and 2 drawers hidden behind a latching panel. Below the tray is a skirt tray. This was intended for ladies skirts, and having a cloth/paper bottom on the tray allowed the owner to pin her skirts down to keep them flat during travel. All of the interior was originally a stripped fabric. The inside top, and skirt tray, have been replaced by a paper reproduction I made from the original cloth. Antique Barrel Stave-Saratoga Trunk Measures- L 28" x W 16" x H 21" Estimated to be made in the 1870's Very Clean& sturdy for it's age Barrel Stave- Horizontal Wood S lats Ladies Saratoga Trunk-Dome top Outside- Made of two diff erent color metals.Copper finish& a black finish. The main metal looks to be copper but I don't have a way to test to be sure. H orizontal wood looks to be oak but again I can't say with certainty. The top is rounded or dome shaped(Not a steamer) The front has two functional latches.Freely slides up and down to lock the trunk. Print measures 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" Has one hinge on the right side. There is no evidence that the left side ever had a hinge so I do not believe it is missing. The metal work on the left top side of the inside is slightly bent. With some minor work and the use of a mallet it can be re-shaped. Antique Flat top Saratoga Oak Slat trunk with lithographs--possibly Overland
Thanks for stopping by.this trunk is thought to be an Overland(1890's) by one of the largest trunk websites via photos I sent last week. It comes from an estate sale in Northern California. This trunk has all the oak slats on it over the canvas.I have yet to find another trunk with the canvas still in tact. Although I'm sure there are probably some out there. This trunk is in very good condition despite it's age. It's very large: 40" long, 27 1/2" tall, and 24 inches wide. It has three rollers in tact. This is from a nonsmoking home, with no musty smells whatsoever. Very clean, sweet smelling. No mold or mildew whatsoever. I am selling without including any shipping costs. Trunk Antique Large 1880's Camelback Saratoga All Original Lock Barrel Key
For your consideration. This rare large(interior 36"L x 21"W x 29"D) 36"H, including lid, old(1880's) barrel stave top style Saratoga trunk with metal edge binding and trim, original working double hasp brass lock and iron latches. It has five hardwood slats across the top and two across the front, rear and both sides. Trunk body is thick pine and was probably covered in leather when new. The original working lock with spring loaded key cover and barrel key were made by Star Lock Works of Philadelphia. Ornamental cast metal clamps on the slat ends as well as the cast iron latches on the front were patented by Charles Taylor in 1877& 1878. Copies of original patent applications and other historical paperwork included) The bottom still has the original wood slats and sheet iron covering. Interior is cleaned out to ... morethe bare wood. Antique Curved Alligator Like Hammered Tin Top Saratoga Trunk Offering you beautiful curved Dome top trunk. This trunk once was quite an expensive beauty. The curved top. Plentiful nails and amazing-fine hardware makes this a high-end piece, often known as a Saratoga Trunk. The reason for the curved top is to ensure that this trunk would go on the top of the stack. Rather than having trunks stacked on top of it, damaging the contents. I have not altered or refinished this trunk. I purchased it from a lady who stated it was in the stable area of her very old, victorian home. The home was built in the early 1900's. INSIDE: I believe it is constructed of Pine with a floral paper design. Which means this trunk belonged to a Woman. OUTSIDE: Has a dark metal/tin tone. 4) wooden, Elm? vertical slats on the dome top, 2) horizontal wooden slats ... moreon the front& back, 1) wooden slat on each side. There is a 16" wide Alligator Leather look design area on the top that extends down the front and back and along both sides that is divided by leather slats. I was told this design area is an ornate hammered tin. The metal work is very nice and when this trunk was new, must have been gorgeous. There are(8) metal shield type designs holding down the top wood slats. On the top side ends, there are large metal Crown like designs. There are(2) brown leather handles. 1 handle is torn but repairable. This trunk was definitely for a woman of importance. Approximate Dimensions: 22" High@ the highest-middle 32.5" Wide 17.5" Deep Condition: This trunk is in good antique condition. There is normal wear. Which is expected, due to it's age. The bottom inside does have a few minor cracking in the wood. There is not a lock on the trunk. All the nails& design hardware are there, as far as I can see. Antique Curved Leather Top Saratoga Trunk Offering you beautiful curved Dome top trunk. This trunk once was quite an expensive beauty. The curved top. Plentiful nails and amazing-fine hardware makes this a high-end piece, often known as a Saratoga Trunk. The reason for the curved top is to ensure that this trunk would go on the top of the stack. Rather than having trunks stacked on top of it, damaging the contents. I have not altered or refinished this trunk. I purchased it from a lady who stated it was in the stable area of her very old, victorian home. The home was built in the early 1900's. INSIDE: I believe it is constructed of Pine with a floral paper design. Which means this trunk belonged to a Woman. OUTSIDE: Has a dark metal/tin tone. 4) wooden, Elm? vertical slats on the dome top, 2) horizontal wooden slats on the front& ... moreback, 1) wooden slat on each side. There is a 16" wide(wooden slats divide the leather area) Leather type Alligator design area on the top that extends down the front and back and along both sides. The metal work is very nice and when this trunk was new, must have been gorgeous. There are(8) metal shield type designs holding down the top wood slats. On the top side ends, there are large metal Crown like designs. There are(2) brown leather handles. 1 handle is torn but repairable. This trunk was definitely for a woman of importance. Approximate Dimensions: 22" High@ the highest-middle 32.5" Wide 17.5" Deep Condition: This trunk is in good antique condition. There is normal wear. Which is expected, due to it's age. The bottom inside does have a few minor cracking in the wood. There is not a lock on the trunk. All the nails& design hardware are there, as far as I can see. In the late 1870s-1890s, a large fancy round top trunk became popular, because it was used by the wealthier people visiting the spas and racetrack at Saratoga Springs, New York. The Saratoga Trunk was a very large, domed top style with fancy trim, covered in either leather or metal. Early trunk catalogs and ads describe Saratoga trunks as a"large round top of the highest class" Round top trunks(also called humpback. Camelback. Monitor top, and barrel top) were made in a wide range of sizes and coverings. It is believed that the round tops were made for those who wanted to try to have their trunk packed on the top of baggage cars, so they would not be damaged. For sale today is a beautifully restored Saratoga trunk which are from the 1845 to 1865 time period. This trunk could be as much as 150 years old! This is a very old. Very rare style and very beautiful trunk! This trunk was structurally sound when the restoration started and the wood bottom is solid. Has multiple coats of clear, three original slats, Three original metal wheels and one new steel wheel and the trunk rolls easily. The two hinges are original and they are HD, tight and the lid closes well. The brass center lock is polished and there is no key. The original tray is long gone and the interior has been removed. The metal/tin is in fair to good condition. The cloth lid stay is new to the trunk. New black leather handles were installed with the original end caps.
