It is in overall great condition however we do believe that the hardware has been replaced as well as a possible resurface and is likely a marriage upon very close inspection but works quite well. Noted and shown there is a separation to the lower section on either side. This is an exceptional antique period American Tiger Maple Chest of Drawers in a Queen Anne form. It measures 72.5 inches in height. The top measures 39x18 inches. The top and base appear to be a marriage with the top being older then the base. The drawer fronts have a pronounced Tiger Maple and the color of the chest is that honey golden brown that is most sought after. The top appears to be a period piece from the early 1800s. The base appears to be more custom made which might be made 50 years ago, it is hard to tell. From looking at the front and sides you would never tell it was a marriage but when you open up ... morethe drawers on the base you can tell they dont have the same age as the top. Due to the size of this piece it either needs to be picked up here on Cape Cod or it must be shipped freight at the cost of the purchaser. We can recommend a couple of freight shippers on the east coast who do a very nice job for a reasonable price. However shipping west of the Mississippi can cause a jump in the freight price so please keep that in mind when bidding. This sale is for an awesome Tiger Maple Sugar Chest. It has some killer figured Tiger maple all around. The chest is a two piece construction just like a large original. The base of the chest is all mortis and tenon construction with square wooden walnut pegs holding it together. It has Sheraton style hand turned legs. The divider inside the chest is mortised in. The chest has an inlaid brass escutcheon but no actual lock it is for decorative purposes only. The hinges on the lid are antique and inlaid in with flathead screws. It has an all hand dovetailed drawer with a chamfered bottom. The drawer has two hand turned tiger maple knobs(wooden knobs are much more authentic. As very few people could afford metal hardware back then) The knobs are attached with antique flathead screws and are hand chiseled in. The chest is all properly aged inside ... moreand out. Tiger maple and cherry Empire Sheraton inlaid chest 1850 curly antique
This beautiful chest was found in S E Ohio in a Morgan Co. farm house. The combination of woods and inlay work make this chest very appealing. The top is a one piece poplar board with a red wash on it. The sides are cherry with walnut panels. The drawers are solid tiger maple. And the inlaid keyholes are walnut. The knobs are original and screw into the front of the drawers. If you don't like porcelain, they can easily be replaced. The secondary wood is poplar and the post and legs are cherry. The chest is in original as found condition. It measures 47 1/4' tall case width 41' top is 21' deep, it has a small overhang on the back for chair rail. A fine addition to any collection.
