Many of the so-called"rubies" and“sapphires” in Europe's crown jewels are actually spinel. One of history’s most famous gemstones is a spinel known as the Black Prince's“Ruby” a magnificent 170-carat red spinel that currently adorns the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels. Long believed to be a ruby, this gem was once owned by the Arabian Emirs, who were the rulers of Granada(present-day Spain) In the 14th century, Pedro the Cruel, the king of Castile, under the pretext of negotiations, drew into ambush the Emir Abu Said and ruthlessly murdered him and took the gemstone. The gemstone was given to England’s Edward the Black Prince, heir to the British throne, in return for military service putting down an insurrection raised against Pedro the Cruel. King Henry V then wore the gemstone on his battle helmet during the battle of Azincourt in 1415 A.D. King Richard III of England, the last of the Plantagenet dynasty, wore the same helmet during the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 A.D. where he was killed. For sale is a superb large porcelain plaque made in France in the early to mid 19th century. This piece would have adorned a large piece of furniture ... morewhich would have looked stunning! My dad has a piece with a few plaques like this in it and it looks top! Sadly here we only have the one plaque but non the less a piece of superb porcelain: I have not seen a plaque of this quality in this style and size in a very long time. It is extremely well done and in perfect condition plus a nice size. The scene is of two lovers with a guitar player next to them playing a little mood music. Nice landscape surrounding with lots of detail! The plaque is 8.25 inches tall and 12 inches wide. The frame is some sort of gold metal likely brass or bronze and the backing is wood as there would have been the furniture piece instead of this backing! The frame is about 0.5 inches wide. No idea if it is marked in the back but I suspect not as the French rarely did mark their wares during this time. A stunning piece for sure! For sale is a superb scenic cup made in Germany in the early to mid 19th century. I have another cup with a fantastic armorial by the same maker but I ... morecannot figure out who it is. It did come with three Nymphenburg scenic cups but I don't think it is by them. The cup is hand painted with a scene of the fort(Festung) Ehrenbreitstein which you can look up online- it is still there and looks fairly similar. The quality of the painting is superb. The cup also has a nice gold trim and a figural handle though I am not sure it is supposed to be! The cup is unmarked except for the name of the scene in black script underneath. The cup is 3 inches tall(plus the handle) and 3.125 inches in diameter. It is in great condition with some wear to the gold trim. If you like my goodies have a look at my other auctions for a lot more top maker pieces like KPM. Sevres and so on or contact me through Ebay. Scene You can find more through my Me page! (He is probably the most normal of all the characters which doesn't say much :) Superbly modeled with a nice pose and lots of detail and hand painted ... moreto perfection in a fairly muted color palette. No impressed mark yet so it is a nice and early version after they redid them from the original 18th century molds in the late 19th century.
