Lovely Antique Circa 1800s Hand Carved Wood Pediment Piece I have to tell you about the auction that I went to this week. It was in Geneva Illinois. In a sandstone building that was built before the Civil War. The sale was the final liquidation of an antique store(they‘d had one previous auction- so much stuff, they had to have two) that used to operate out of this location- but the building has been closed, as well as the business, for over 20 years following the passing of the previous owners. Now, we’re talking two stories, an attic and a basement PACKED with antiques- it’s hard to imagine, and all of it just sitting for two decades. These folks had amassed a huge antique collection- many many items dating back to the early 1800s and before. There’s some gorgeous pieces of primitive Americana that I found. I can’t tell you how excited ... moreI am to be listing my treasures from the sale. I will be listing them for weeks to come. I also have the last of my farm auctions and South Dakota finds listed this week, so there’s something for everyone! I was saying in one of my other listings how I bought a whole large box filled with a mixture of old antique hand carved pediments at the auctiion- I'll be listing them for weeks. So be sure to keep checking. This one is soooo pretty- and, it has one nail sticking out the back which I've left where it is, because I want you to see that it is an old forged iron sqaure nail. I don't know if this piece came off of a larger architectural piece, or if it was a piece of furniture, but whatever it was, it was grand, for sure. Measuring 5 1/8" widest, it is 8 1/8"tallest and 1 3/4" thickest. It weighs 1/2 lb and is all hand carved out of one solid piece of wood. The finish is beautiful on this one- a little dusty(it needs a cleaning, I have not cleaned it orr messed with the as found patina in any way) but really, with veryvery little wear that can be seen. ARCHITECTURAL PEDIMENT- CIRCA 1870- PERFECT FOR HEADBOARD
This is a monumental architectural pediment- Circa 1870. The depth to the dado panels in this oldie are just a true testimony to the craftsmanship used to create this stunning example of Victorian architecture. This piece could be applied in either direction(with the gingerbread on the top- if hung on a wall- OR hanging down if used in an opening.perhaps with some corbels on each end) This piece is currently measuring 83" long. But because of the proportions- it could be cut down on either end for a smaller application. The portion that does not have the gingerbread embellishment is 11 1/2" high- then it becomes 15" high where the embellishment begins- and at the highest part- it measures 18" high. This piece is 3 1/4" thick. This would make a wonderful head board or a statement piece anywhere.
