I'found' this in my barn- hanging in the rafters were I was placing gable ... morepediments. I thought for the longest time I had this piece listed- but alas it was not. I bought this piece about 5 or 6 years ago. Has a great checkered design in the triangle pediment area- the green paint is creak. Nice crackled finish. The top of the peak is unpainted- it must have been covered as the green paint was NEVER applied to the piece. The bottom edge needs to be trimmed- it has some soft spots on it- I tried to capture this in the pictures. I would estimate about 1 to 1.5" needs to be trimmed on the bottom edge for a smooth. Even edge. Measures 108.5" long is 39" at peak& 8.5" deep. Old square nails are studding the backside also. Has metal flashing on top edge. Lady Liberty 1790's SWEET Walnut Door Topper Pediment Belong to Thomas Johnson
I call her Lady Liberty and she has been in my personal collection for 20 years. Fresh out of high school I went to work for the parks and rec department of Frederick County. My job one day was to clean out the bank barn and take misc. items to the land fill. This wonderful door topper org to the manor house of Rose Hill Manor was one of many items I was instructed to dispose of. I was informed by a coworker the door topper was removed from the manor house in a previous renovation. Covered in a thick layer of grime and missing some pieces I still could not bring myself to dispose of her. I brought her home( with my supervisors permission) and gave her a good cleaning. Under the grime I found this beautiful walnut masterpiece. I found a master craftsman to repair her and bring her back to life. Which I must say he did a wonderful job. Some ... morepieces were recreated, repaired and he added a shelf board to make it practical use for me. Shelf board can be easily removed and may have to be removed for safe shipping. This door Topper was originally installed in the inside main double door way of the manor home of Rose Hill Manor of Frederick County. Rose Hill Manor was built in 1790 for Governor Thomas Johnson's retirement home. Johnson was the first governor of Maryland and an associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. His retirement home was constructed of the finest woods and craftsmanship of time and it shows with the quality of this piece. Lady Liberty measures 61" wide x 17 1/2" tall x 5" thick. It is only 15 3/4" across the bottom because there is a piece broken off on the left side. The piece stands about 10" tall. It has holes on both sides so it could be used as a wall hanging. The eagle with its wing spread and the design have some depth to it. It is an old piece and has an edge broken off on the left side. It has some rust and needs to be cleaned. I believe this once was a part of an old Victorian bed or mirror as it has 2 screw or nail holes on the back. Looks like there was a small piece on the bottom of the Bulls Eye that has been glued back in place. Bulls Eye also has a crack coming off the small nick on right side. Please refer to the pictures. 80 Antique Victorian Door Window Plinth Bullseye Rosette Salvaged Wood Wooden
Please read all contents of this auction before you place a bid! Up for auction: We used salvaged heart pine wood and floors from a hundred + year old farm house and cotton mill in Franklin County. North Carolina. We needed to replace a large number of rosettes during the restoration of our ca. 1890 Victorian Gothic home(over half of the original rosettes to our home had been removed in a 1952 renovation) Unfortunately. The milling company used the wrong blade/pattern when cutting the replacement rosettes for our home. Though we tried to resolve the problem by re-milling these rosettes, using the other side- in the end, we decided to start from scratch. Therefore. We are selling all the rosettes to barely offset what we've already spent towards this endeavor. You can choose which side you'd like to use them for in your project(s) ... moreBefore you assume that this is pricey for this lot. Keep in mind that these blocks were hand cut precisely for the rosette size we needed, not to mention we drove well over an hour to drop off and retrieve them from the milling company who did the work for us. The blades were custom cut but in the end, did not meet the specifications that we had requested. This is a great deal for the individual who appreciates the authentic materials needed for preservation and truly understands the difference in restoration and renovation! There are a total of 80 rosettes. 19 cut on one side. 61 are cut on both sides. These rosettes measure approximately 5" x 5" x 1 1/8" each. This is 100 plus year old heart pine salvaged wood that has been cut and used to match period ca. 1890 rosettes in our home. This group is the leftover from our Victorian home restoration project.
