Exactly what it is we do not know- a corbel? a ship's decorative support? temple ornamentation? Unfortunately. It's history was unavailable and our attempts to research the piece have produced nothing. We do know it's Chinese- made of wood and hand carved with incredible detail! Hopefully someone looking knows what it is- or(like ourselves) just finds it an intriguing conversation piece! It does have a relatively substantial amount of wear and tear to the wood from age and exposure to elements- the pictures provided show the actual condition- there are multiple cracks. Chips, erosion and discoloration of the wood, and what may be insect damage. The decorative carvings are fragile with some pieces having chipped away over the years but overall it is still an amazing piece of art that with some TLC could make for a wonderful addition to any collection or perhaps can be repurposed for more practical use! Antique Gothic Architectural Element 1800s French Carved Wood Reliquary Corbel
This most unusual architectural element of the early to middle 1800s is hand carved from rich. Dark brown mahogany and shows handsawn marks on the reverse. It is most likely European in origin and measures 18” tall x 30” wide x 6” deep and appears to have comprised the face of a corner shelf/bracket that supported a carved statue. Its center features a 10 3/8” diameter roundel with 6 1/8” inner diameter and a depth varying from 2 ½”3 ½” deep. I conjecture this area held a relic of the saint whose figure was displayed on top and the varying depth of the hole suggests a downward angle that allowed the object displayed to be more easily viewed from below. In any event, the surface is beautifully carved by a master craftsman and the surface retains the original rich French Polish surface. It is grimy with no bad losses…just some trimming ... moreand drilled holes on the bottom tip where its was incorporated into other woodwork elements. Four great-looking antique cast iron building corbels! Each is approx. 6" X 5.75" And stick out about 3.75" from the wall. So they are small-ish, but heavy, weighing a bit over 6 lbs. each. LOTS of rust, paint loss, chips to the iron, and other wear consistent with age/use. One of them is rough and gnarly on the lower right; it looks like it came into contact with a welding torch, perhaps during removal from the building. Huge Architectural Statement Antique Corbels!
This listing is for both corbels. The photos of the back did not turn out well so I will be retaking them. If there are any other photos you would like to see.just let me know! The good stuff first! These are very OLD and large! These corbels will be a statement piece in any room of your home! Each one could be its own shelf or would be stunning as support brackets for a fireplace. Shelving, etc. The architexture from the turn of the century is slowly being destroyed house by house. These corbels are a great way to show how homes were built by craftsman. Dimensions are.drumroll.21 inches tall x 12 inches deep x 6 inches wide. They weigh a staggering 10 1/2 pounds each! These are truly one of a kind and when they are gone.they are gone. Aren't these great? I love to use vintage architectural pieces whether it's here on our alpaca farm ... moreor in the city. They are great conversation pieces and offer a myriad of uses! These are solid wood and I do not have the knowledge of what type of building they have come from. Corbels in our area are on homes that were built before the 1900s but they could be from the 20s or 30s as well. Uses that I have seen are a decorative piece that was used as a support bracket for the front porch but they were widely used in other aspects of decor as well. Usually they weren't weight bearing. I don't know why I just gave you a bit of history but there you go: Back to the corbels or support brackets.These are not handcarved one piece corbels but instead they were designed as seperate pieces and then nailed together. The tall side 11.5 inches. The sides are 10 inches and they are almost 4 inches in width. I love the character of the paint but it is chipping and has loads of patina because this was an outdoor item. I would suggest spraying it with a clearcoat if you would like to preserve the finish. There are lots of dings and dents but are truly a beautiful piece for bookends. Underneath a fireplace mantle, bar support, etc. Some small pieces of wood trim are missing

I love corbels and the history that go with them! They are getting harder to find because they are usually found on historical homes under the eaves. This particular one is solid wood and was put together in sections. Can you imagine how much work these took to make in bulk for that particular house? Amazing. You can see some of the original finish but at some point some black was put on it and then it was lightly hit with some spray paint that Lowes sell that gives it a rough texture. Thanksfully. They didn't use a lot of the product so it will be much easier to sand off. This would look amazing painted in an eggshell cream and lightly sand the edges to give it back its aged look. It is 4.5 pounds~ It is 11 inches tall from top to bottom, widest part of the base is 6 inches, width at the top is 9 inches, the base is 6 x 6. Two antique Wood Corbel Brackets Architectural House Salvage Painted Spindles
Two architectural wood pieces from the exterior of an old home. They have the original flaking. Peeling white paint on them and decorative spindles. There are nails still stuck in them, though I've bent them over be careful of sharp nails. On one, the attached spindle bracket is a little loose which may need nailed and glued. I have the missing decorative finial which you can attach. These are old so they look old and there will be debris in the box from dirt and chipped paint. Antique Vintage 4 Matching Solid Wood Salvage Architectural Corbels
These are 4 matching corbels which are in very good condition. They have no missing parts and no rotten wood with only normal wear due to age. They are made from solid wood and weigh about 3 1/4 pounds each. Can be used for any architectural project that you might have. They measure 16 1/2" high. 4 1/2" wide by 5" deep at the widest point. I really do not know the age of these corbels, but for safety purposes, I did remove large cut nails which were used to fasten them to the house, I hope this helps with dating them. PAIR LARGE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE WOOD CORBELS CHIPPY PAINT
Please scroll down under this description for additional views. Large pair of architectural exterior corbels from a Victorian house. One is slightly taller than the other which is only noticeable when they are side-by-side. One is 20" tall while the second one is 20 1/2" tall. Both are 11" deep and 5 1/4" wide. Constructed from five laminated 1" thick solid pine boards. The outermost board on each side are jigsaw cut away to add design and depth, the fronts alternate the depth of the profile slightly to add interest straight on. There is such a build-up of old paint that the faces almost look coated with stucco but its just newer paint over old chippy alligatored paint. Very sturdy, these will definitely make a design statement whether you set them on a mantel, hearth or table or use them as shelf supports. Originally, only masonry was given the corbel name, while wooden structures of the same purpose were called"braggers" or"tassels. Progressively, the corbel moniker began being applied to a wider range of materials, and today, anything with a load bearing or an aesthetic function which resembles the original stone corbel is given the name. Wood corbels have long been an integral part of architectural design in China, where together with unique structural elements such as interlocking wooden brackets( dougong) they are one of the most important elements in traditional Chinese architecture. While dougong were originally structural. And became decorative, ... morecorbels were seen as mainly decorative, though also structural. However, the focus slowly changed and design became a primary feature.
