The map shows Spain starting from the north at its border with Gallia(France) and continuing to the south to the straights of Hercules(today Gibraltar) This map was taken out of a damaged copy of the Long's Classical Atlas(see the last three photos) Which is not part of this sale. This sale is for the map only. These maps would look great once properly framed. They were engraved by GE Sherman Printed by Henry Seibert of New York. The maps show quite a bit of detail and are nicely colored. It shows cities, rivers, mountain ranges, water bodies and longitudinal and latitude lines with London being the zero. We have for your consideration this fantastic and wonderful estate find( Antique School Maps over 36" wide~Wood Wall Storage Case) We found this from an antique dealer in Arcadia Valley in South Eastern Missouri who told me that it came from an old school house in the area. The antique Map Wall case includes maps of the USA~ASIA~AFRICA& EUROPE. Please Note: This is a large listing with much to read and see. To the best of our ability. We wanted you to really experience this map set. So that you can make an accurate decision on your investment. The Custom made case is made of a hard wood(possibly oak) It was manufactured as you can see by the Brass Identification Plate by the A.H. ANDREWS CO. CHICAGO ILL. The case may have had a few repairs in the last 100 years or so. But over all is in good usable condition. The right front panel ... morehas some light surface buckling only on the outside surface. The inside looks nice. There is a small piece of wood or sliver that has been cracked and broken off on the back edge of the top board. Not noticeable and does not affect the use of the cabinet) and you will see a small paint splatter specks mostly on that same top board or what you might call a shelf area. The outside dimensions measures approximately 45 1/4 inches wide by 14 inches tall by 4 inches deep. To explore the maps you simply release the hooked hasps located on each outside edge of the door. The door is mounted with good strong hinges will lower into its resting place revealing the maps. This nice old case also has a functional lock on the front top of the drop down door. The front lock cover is made of what appears to be Copper. It uses a very basic"L" shaped key that should be easy to find or even have one made. The back of the case is still in good usable condition although it does show its age. This case holds 4 maps total. And all appear to be original to the case. Each map has been mounted to an antique spring roller that was manufactured by the HARTSHORN'S ROLLER COMPANY with Patent dat

Justus Perthes, Gotha, 1863 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the unique Solar System chart from the 1863 German 4th Edition(Espenhorst PP 2.1.1.1.4) of the world atlas issued by the renowned Stieler publishing firm established by Adolf Stieler(1775-1836) and later managed by Heinrich Berghaus and August Petermann. Without question one of the most famous Stieler plates. The design was originated with Stieler himself in the 1820s and continued to appear in the atlases for decades as a kind of trademark map. T he chart was of course updated to reflect new data and discoveries. E.g. the inclusion of Neptune here which was unknown in Stieler's day. Insets present pictorial representation of the planets, elaborate diagrams ... morefor the phases of the moon and the transit of Venus, extensive data tables including discoveries of asteroids from Ceres in 1801 to Harmonia in 1856. The central chart depicts planetary orbits and the course of principal comets on a zodiac overlay- taken as a whole the chart is a true masterwork of the visual display of quantitative information. Wood Plaque of Cornelis De Jode's 1589 World Map Totivs Orbis Cogniti Salis
This auction is for what I believe to be a replica of Cornelis De Jode's 1589 World Map mounted on wood plaque. The plaque measures 13.5" X 10" and is 3/4" thick. In Gerard De Jode's first atlas of 1578. He produced a world map, which does not appear in his son Cornelis De Jode's Atlas of 1593. It its place, there are two world maps, this map of the world and a polar hemispheric projection, based upon Guillaume Postel's map of 1581. There is a note in the lower right-hand corner of this map stating that Corn: de Iudoejs of Antwerp made the map in November 1589 at the Academy of Douai and the printer’s signature is that of Cornelis’ father, Gerard de Jode, but the map was not published until two years after his father’s death. According to Shirley, the map is generally attributed to Marinus of Tyre, with geography ... morebased on Mercator and Ortelius, while in the top corners are two smaller maps showing the eastern and western hemispheres on Roger Bacon’s circular projection. The map shows a very clear Northwest and Northeast Passage, along with evidence of a polar configuration similar to Mercator's Polar map of 1595, both of which derive from Mercator's World map of 1569. The map also includes a massive unknown southern continent. ThAn elaborate note in the interior credits Columbus with the discovery of America in 1492.

Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum(Theatre of the World) is considered the first true atlas in the modern sense: a collection of uniform map sheets and sustaining text bound to form a book for which copper printing plates were specifically engraved. The Ortelius atlas is sometimes referred to as the summary of sixteenth-century cartography. Many of his atlas's maps were based upon sources that no longer exist or are extremely rare. Ortelius appended a unique source list(the"Catalogus Auctorum" identifying the names of contemporary cartographers. Some of whom would otherwise have remained obscure. More than an original ... moreconcept, the Theatrum was also the most authoritative and successful such work during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Because it was frequently revised to reflect new geographical and historical insights. Contemporary scholars in western Europe praised the Theatrum highly for its accuracy.
