They depict the Western and Eastern Hemispheres offering a fascinating snapshot of the world during a period of rapid globalization and discovery. Both maps note towns. Rivers, mountains, deserts, islands, and various other important topographical details. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and territorial boundaries are outlined in color. The map of the Western Hemisphere covers North America, South America, West Indies and most of Polynesia, including New Zealand. The borders of the United States predated the Annexation ... moreof Texas and the Mexican American War, but include Oregon. In a unusual move for a British cartographer Hall recognizes American rather than British claims to the British Columbia- Vancouver region. Perhaps his sympathies secretly lay with the former colonies? Numerous islands are identified along with notes on their discovery. Near the southern tip of South America, Hall marks the Aurora Islands'doubtful' The Aurora Islands were a group of three islands first reported in 1762 by the Spanish ship Aurora while sailing from Lima to Cadiz. They were subsequently and repeatedly sighted several times over the next 90 years. The last official sighting was 1852, after which they were ascribed to myth. Though the Aurora Islands never really existed they continued to appear on maps well into the mid-19th century. Wessell's voyage to latitude 74°15' S(the region that would later be known as the Weddell Sea) is here noted. Hall also marks the southernmost point of Captain Cook's explorations aboard the HMS Resolution. It was this voyage that decisively proved the postulated continent of Terra Australis to be a myth. Arrowsmith's original map of 1794 was one of the great cartographic achievements of his age. The map was designed to illustrate the important discoveries and navigations of Captain James Cook. All subsequent variants on Arrowsmith's map follow his basic globular model and include both an illustration of the great navigator and markings showing the tracks of his three voyages of discovery. Machimos and Eusebes where, according to Theopompus, the two greatest cities of Hyperborea. Hyperborea itself was mythic sometimes utopic continent inhabited by giants, gods, centaurs, and other beasts of legend. The inhabitants of Machimos were warlike, dominated their neighbors, and rich in gold and other treasures- a not inaccurate descriptions of the Aztec empire. However, Theopompus also suggests that they were also invulnerable to iron- alas if Vaugondy's placement of Machimos is to be believed history has proven otherwise. The tracks of Captain Cook's three historic voyages, as well as the site if his untimely death in Hawaii, are carefully depicted. Van Diemen's Land, or Tasmania, remains attached to the mainland of Australia. In the American Northwest much is unknown and confused. Vancouver Island does not appear and many of the inlets explored by Cook are wildly oversized– leaving open the possibility that they lead to a Northwest Passage. In Africa Lake Malawi appears in embryonic form and is suggestive of further lakes in the Rift Valley– the discovery of which would not follow until half a century later. One of this map's most interesting and curious elements it its inclusion of'Fousang des Chinois' in what is today British Columbia or Alaska. Fusang or Fousang is a region first documented by the Chinese Buddhist missionary Hui Shen in the 5th century. Hui Shen describes a land some 20,000 Chinese Li(c. 8000 km) east of the China coast. Fousang is described in considerable detail in the 7th century Book of Liang by Yao Silian. There are also accounts that the land was settled c. 220 BC by a Chinese Emperor of the Han Dynasty. In

It is from an 1863 edition of Johnson's Family Atlas(New York: Johnson& Ward. 1863) A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. Johnson's name appears in the title block on the map. Johnson began his career under J.H. Colton, from whom he bought the business, revised the plates with the continued help of Colton and produced his Family Atlas, published yearly throughout the 1860s. In 1867, it won the gold medal in its category at the Paris Exhibition. No doubt one of the great Civil War era atlases of the period, only comparable to ... morethe atlases produced by his competitor, S.A. Mitchell. The map is not matted, mounted or framed, being sold as a large elephant folio size double page map with a centerfold as issued. Overall, a very nice example. Size: The map image measures approximately 14 1/2 by 26 inches(each sphere is 13 inches in diameter) on a 18 by 26 1/2" page and a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Good to Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original hand color. Blank on the reverse, and a centerfold as issued. It is basically as seen in the pic. There are some light handling smudges around the edges, otherwise the map image area is very clean with nice color on a strong non-brittle page that would frame up nicely, see the pics for more on condition. Genuine antique map"Les Deux Poles Arcticque Septentrional. Et Antarcticque ou Meridional. by Nicolas Sanson, published in Paris. Map is dated 1657. This double hemisphere map is based on the polar projections to include the northern and southern thirds of the world. Interesting, more for what is not included than what is, it shows the limited extent of knowledge of these extreme latitudes. Extraordinarily enough, the southern projection shows an outline of a land mass"Australe et Incogneue" long before it was discovered, which roughly corresponds to Antarctica as we know it today. In the north, several possible Northwest passages are conjectured, Greenland is depicted attached to the American continent, and a land mass"Terre de Yezo, ou Iesso" takes up the entire area to East Asia. I have had too many buyers, particularly in the last 6 months, who have"loaded up" on my material buying 30, 40, 50 even up to 80 stamp lots saving $100 to $200 in shipping. I introduced a Combined Shipping Rule in late 2011 such that each additional stamp lot cost.05c, then.08c and then early this year raised it to.10c but nothing has slowed ... moresuch buyers down. Such orders are very burdensome as they typically take between over 1 hour to as many as 3 hours to complete and ship. Consequently. I now have placed a limit on the total number of lots(25) which a buyer can bid on and buy. This is a fair and reasonable limit in my opinion as the vast majority of buyers purchase far less than that limit. The biggest offenders in terms of very large purchases have been dealers who also sell on Ebay or at their local stamp shows and purchase my stamps at a fraction of the price they charge their customers which will no longer be allowed. Addditionally. I am going back to my old method of manually preparing invoices after ALL auctions have closed(buyers who purchase 1 item can, of course,immediately use Ebay's automatic checkout) I will then calculate the cost of shipping on orders of 2 or more stamp lots as follows: 1. 1-4 single stamps or small sets comprised of 2-3 stamps will be priced at the flat base rate applicable to the buyer's location($2 US. $3 outside the US) at no additional cost. 2. 5-10 single stamps or small sets(see above) will be priced at.10c each. 3. 11-15 single stamps or small sets(see above) will b
