The Lonesome Dove ~ Comanche Moon map shown above in a low-resolution sample is a highly detailed and annotated map of the fictional 1881-1882 Lonesome Dove Trail Drive and the 1857-1866 Comanche Moon wars from the acclaimed historical novels by Larry McMurtry as well as the television miniseries that followed. The historic routes of the Great Western Cattle Trails are also included as are portions the routes of the Santa Fe Trail. The Independence Trail and the Oregon Trail as well as others. Because Lonesome Dove and Comanche Moon take place on such a large canvas and involve so many plots and sub-plots and characters. Having this map at hand when the books are read or the ... moreshows are watched is a great way to clarify the geography involved. This map also covers all the terrain that is involved in the other books in the Lonesome Dove series like Streets of Laredo. Although specific events and places are not described. 1857~1866 Comanche Moon: The novel covers the earlier days of Gus& Call and many of the other characters that will later be a part of Lonesome Dove. The map graphically shows a period from about 1857 to just after the Civil War. During which the final fierce battles between the Comanches and the Rangers and later the US Calvary were fought. The map follows McMurty's route descriptions from Austin to the Llano Estacado or Staked Plains, the Red River country and along the Rio Grande and Pecos frontiers and into the forbidding Sierra Madre of Old Mexico to the Sierra Perdida slaughterhouse and prison. Description: A stunning full color 1963 Geologic Map of the Letronne Region of the Moon by the U.S. Geological Survey. Letronne is a lava-flooded remnant of a lunar crater which forms a bay along the southwestern shore of the Oceanus Procellarum. Or Ocean of Storms, as the northern part of its rim is completely missing. The map shows the large crater Gassendi, the flooded crater Billy, and the smaller crater Flamsteed. A wrinkle ridge traverses the floor from north to south, and further wrinkles outline a portion of the missing rim. This region is named after the French archaeologist, Jean Antoine Letronne(1787-1848 A.D. who translated important works from ancient ... moreEgypt. It is believed that most of the moon’s craters were formed approximately 3.9 billion years ago, during a period of intense bombardment in the Inner Solar System. The cratering rate fluctuates as collisions in the asteroid belt send fragment clusters into the Inner Solar System. This map might show hypervelocity impact craters caused by the same cluster of asteroids that, 65 million years ago, caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. As humans wouldn't land on the moon until 1969, how were we able to map its geology? The map’s extraordinarily detailed metadata explains that the cartographers used photos, and observations from optical and radio telescopes, with relief created by measuring shadows, combined with an assumed sun angle and an assumed base elevation. The geology was arrived at from observing differences in, and layering of, topographical forms, and in varying albedo(amount of reflected sunlight) both of which indicate different underlying materials formed under different processes. This map first appeared in Hevelius’ 1647 work Selenographia ... morewhich laid the groundwork for most subsequent lunar cartographic studies. Here the moon is presented as it can never be seen from Earth, at a greater than 360 degrees and with all visible features given equal weight. In this map Hevelius also establishes the convention of mapping the lunar surface as if illuminated from a single source– in this case morning light. The naming conventions he set forth, which associate lunar features with terrestrial locations such as'Asia Minor' Persia' Sicilia' etcetera were popular until the middle of the 18th century when Riccioli’s nomenclature took precedence. The Riccioli map, on the right, is more properly known as the Riccioli-Grimaldi map, for fellow Jesuit Francesco Grimaldi with whom Riccioli composed the chart. This map first appeared in Riccioli and Grimaldi’s 1651 Almagestum Novum. This was a significant lunar chart and offered an entirely new nomenclature which, for the most part, is still in use today. This copperplate engraving was published by the Homann Heirs in Nuremberg, c.1742. In beautiful, original hand coloring, this double hemispheric map provides a comparative analysis of the topographical information and nomenclature used by two different astronomers- Riccioli and Hevelius. The map also features lunar phases on the four outside corners. ... moreAs well as a plan of lunar phases around a single point, oriented in between the two hemispheres. Along the top, Doppelmayr engraved a cherub using a telescope and the goddess figure Diana, lady of the moon. This embellishment is a beautiful celebration of the mystery and mythology of the planets, and serves as a contrast to the scientific technical precision used to map the moon’s surface. The left hemisphere of Tabula Selenographica depicts the lunar map according to Johannes Hevelius. A brewer from Gdansk, whose Selenographica was the first treatises devoted entirely to the moon. This map showed all features of the moon equally– a composite view that showed the Moon in a way that it never appeared in reality, but had accurate placement of the moon’s surface features. The founder of selenography(named after Selene, the goddess of the moon) Hevelius’ nomenclature was always based on earthly features. This nomenclature was used by all Protestant countries until the eighteen century, when it was replaced by a naming system published in 1651 by Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli.
