Very large RAND MCNALLY COSMOPOLITAN WORLD ON MERCATOR'S PROJECTION map measuring approximately 51 1/2" x 34" Although I did not find a date. I'm guessing it to from the late 1950's or early 1960's. I found it in a box lot of items purchased at an estate sale.everything in the box was from that time period. It doesn't appear to have had much use.maybe looked at a time or two and then folded up and stored away. There are no tears but does have creases from being folded as you can see in the photos. Great world map. 50" X 36" George Franklin Cram was a civil war veteran who marched with Sherman prior to his career as a map publisher. On March 18. 1867, George F. Cram and his uncle, Rufus Blanchard, founded the company Blanchard& Cram in Evanston, IL. The company manufactured and sold maps and atlases. Cram became the sole owner two years later and renamed it the George F. Cram Co. The company sold a wide variety of atlases, including the popular Unrivaled Atlas of the World, which was printed continuously from the 1880’s to 1952. In 1921. Cram sold his business to one of his largest customers, E.A. Peterson of the National Map Company. The companies were combined at 32 E. Georgia St. in Indianapolis. The Cram name survived the merger. On March 24, 1928, George F. Cram died at the age of 86. In 1932. The George F. Cram Company ... morebegan manufacturing globes. In 1936, the company moved again to 730 E. Washington St. That location is currently the Marion County Jail. Loren B. Douthit joined the company in 1937 as a School Sales Field Manager to develop the potential of the school market. Between 1937 and 1966. Cram developed a variety of educational maps and globes including the most usable globe in the classroom, Horizon Ring Globe. Loren Douthit became President and majority shareholder of the company in 1966. In March of 1968. Cram moved again to 301 S. LaSalle St. where it remained for 38 years. Loren Douthit retired in 1978, passing the torch to his two sons. William Douthit became President and John Douthit became Vice-President. HUGE Vintage 1955 Crams US Centric World Map/Advertiser Calendar Salesman Sample
This is a delightful salesman's sample of a advertising calendar that includes a map of Cram's US Centric World Gingery Projection. The map proclaims"A Triumph of Mathematical Cartography" where it explains that Mr. Gingery came up with this view of the world map. The left hand corner shows the Gingery projection as it would unfold from a globe. All important US Airports and International Airports as of 1955 are listed along with the air route shown in red on the map. An Index lists key cities around the globe and the# of miles to the center of the map which happens to be the distance to the US as the center of the world. This is truly a map of the place and time in 1955! Jumbo No 28 is marked on the map signifying it's size which is approx 44" x 32" A perfect item for collectors. CORP OF ENGINEERS, 10-64 There are 9 panels: 3 long x 3 high, each measuring 371/4" high by 51 3/4" long, making the group measure a total of 9'4" tall by 12'11" long. THIS IS A GREAT STATEMENT PIECE FOR A RESTAURANT. BAR OR LARGE FAMILY ROOM! The scale is 1:11.000,000 or One Inch = 174 Miles at the Equator. It is in great condition and has been hanging in the hall of a Mid Century Home for decades. This is a pickup only in Baxley. Georgia. Someone will be there to help remove it from the wall.
