The hand coloring is expert and precise. Again this is a larger and more extensive collection of maps than the earlier edtions from the 1860's and early 1870's. Condition: All major defects are shown in the photos. The binding is still together. Which is of course rare for atlases of this size and age. Overall I would say the maps are in very good to near fine condition. The map of New Jersey has a red stain(a bleed from a long gone bookmark. There is some toning mostly to the edges and margins with a few scattered light fox marks. The spine title is completely gone, the spine leather is crazed, the head and tail are very worn and tattered. The tail corner of the top board is badly rubbed and the leather is just about gone. There is a for inch crack in the top gutter. There is a long crack btween the last free endpaper and the title. Ther is water damage to the lower board that stops at the first endpaper and DOES NOT affect any of the text or maps. Overall a rare and beautiful collection of maps.

Admittedly, this book is in rough shape and I'm not sure all pages are there, but it's so interesting if you are a history buff like I am.

1863 Mitchell's Revised School Atlas Civil War Era
This is an awesome School atlas from 1863. There is a very faint inscription that says 1865 inside the front cover. This is very well used but is still intact and has all of its pages. The maps are still very bright and boldly colored. It has the census numbers for the United States and tells how many whites coloreds and free coloreds are in each territory. This is a great Civil war era artifact and would be a great talking piece to have around the house.
