Seutter apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg and eventually returned to his native Augsburg to establish his own map making enterprise in 1707. Seutter's large folio maps are known for their bold engraving style and flamboyant cartouches and this map certainly has both on extravagant display. The map is closely based on the 1673 map published by the Amsterdam engraver Huych(Hugh) Allard(1625-1691) which in turn was based ... moreon the similar maps published in the 1650s by Jan Jansson and Nicolas Visscher. With the basic cartography originating with and the chart of 1614. This so-called Janssonius-Vischer series of celebrated maps established an outline and set of placenames that became the model for cartographers for over a century. As to the historic importance of Seutter's map. This is the first map in the series to show by means of printed lines the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Wonderfully decorative with a flamboyant cartouche depicting natives and slaves in a procession bearing gifts to George II who is attended to by classical gods, the map features a veritable menagerie of wildlife and domestic animals throughout. This well preserved example will make an important addition to any collection related to colonial America. The map covers a broad range of territory but still presents a wealth of detail including charming pictorial topography and forests. This well preserved example exhibits bold original colour(Seutter and Homann maps were never issued with colour in the cartouches but were nearly always coloured with outline and wash in the map itself) and will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the plan with the title cartouche featuring a fine escutcheon of the Arms of the Commonwealth which consolidated the(White Eagle) of Poland with the(knight on horseback) of Lithuania. A Ceres figure in her role as goddess of agriculture is seated at right while the goddess Faustitas is shown in her role of protecting the herd and livestock- Horace wrote of the two walking the farmlands together. Like his mentor Homann, Seutter's maps were generally not original cartography at all but close copies of earlier Dutch or ... moreFrench maps. Yet also like Homann, the bold style of the German engravers and their fine decorative elements often made a significant aesthetic improvement from the original source map. The cartography on this map is a almost exact copy of a circa 1700 map by the Dutch cartographer Carol Allard(1648-1709) although Seutter did convert the names of Duchies and regions from Allard's Italian to Latin. Despite some minor soiling and a small hole in upper border, this rather dramatic map will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome two title cartouche presenting a dual theme of agricultural abundance and martial might: Note road network converging on Milan- curiously the"I" in"MILANO" is obscured which is the second example of this map we have seen with this same"feature" which would seem to indicate a flaw in the plate. The rarity and great importance of the map are based upon the fact that the Jesuit in the 18 th century–until their expulsion in 1767- controlled in their missions most the area herein shown. Pince Nez Eyeglass Seutter Fits U Spectacles Hairpin Case Golden Chain Vintage
This listing is a pair of Pince Nez. 19 th century. Perhaps Victorian Era, eyeglasses, or spectacles. They clamp on to the nose with a nifty and specialized hardware. They are all gold colored metal. Very light, and do not attract a magnet. The lenses are small and unframed. Attaching to the nosepiece. They come in the original case metal case. Lined with a black velvety material, and covered with a black leathery cover. The case is stamped on the front. In gold lettering: E. R. v. Seutter; Optometrist; Jackson. Miss. The case is about 4¾“ long and 1¾” wide. The closure hinges are still tight. The lining inside seems to have a raveled edge at the closure. I can see some dust in the fabric. The leathered binding is separating from the case on the back bottom outside and edge. It is worn on the left side front in a splotchy fashion ... morenear the gold lettering. There is some rusting visible in the bare metal areas of the case. See Photos! The nosepiece appears to be lined with tortoise shell. And hand cut with diamond striations, for good grip and comfort. The hole on the right lens side attachment to the chain clasp appears to have a rough edge. The chain appears delicate. There is a long golden chain which attaches the spectacles to a ladies’ hairpin. The chain is about 10½“ long. And the hairpin is about 2½“ long and ¼“ wide. The hairpin has a pretty decoration on it. The nosepiece is about 1¼“ across. And has the manufacture stamp of: Fits U Co. written across the back. The pincher mechanism on the front seems to work well. The eyeglasses are about 4” across. Inclusive of both lens. I believe these spectacles were made for a lady. They appear gently used. If at all, and have signs of age, but look good to me. I think they are an authentic. And dashing, fashion statement that harks to a romantic age. You don’t see these every day! This very decorative map shows in a combination of ground-plan and view the state of the Saxony Residence before its bombardment by Prussian troops in the Seven Year’s War. The bastions of the new city and an active shipping traffic can be seen in the foreground of the view. A discrepancy between both representations becomes visible when one compares the view with the ground-plan. The view shown is already out of date. Like other numerous maps by the Seutter Press, the westward oriented plan of Dresden is remarkable for the strong original coloring of its built-up and open areas. No. This isn't an actual 1735 printing- just the name of the print and the date of printing is unknown, but, I assume quite a while back.as this was acquired at an ephemera auction with other OLD paper items. My Guess that it was printed in the 1960s SIZE = 26" x 20" I know it looks yellowed. The pics were taken with inside light. It is much brighter and in Wonderful Shape- just some minor rough edges(small corner dings) nice thick paper- would look fantastic in a frame! I do believe that it is hand painted after looking at it under a jewelers loop. The frame that I took it out from had a sticker on the back Macarron S.A. Madrid.
