The note is undated, and refers to the recipient by the name of a character in the play(Sir Peter Teazle) But I’m certain beyond any doubt who that recipient was, and the exact date the gift was given. Vivien Leigh played Lady Teazle opposite only two men. One was Laurence Olivier; and I don’t care what the state of their relationship was when they did the play. I can’t imagine her signing a note to him with her full name. Though that would be something, wouldn’t it? The other was Cyril Maude. An elderly actor who in his heyday had been renowned for his Sir Peter. Vivien and he performed scenes from the play for an event to benefit the RAF and the Actors’ Benevolent Fund- a charity that had an association ... morewith the Actors’ Orphanage Fund, which he had run for a time. The event took place in the Haymarket Theatre, where Vivien had been performing in“The Doctor’s Dilemma, and which had itself been run by Mr. Maude in his actor-manager days.
