1845 SDUK 2 sheet Map of World as known to the Ancients
Fine. Original, two-sheet, steel-engraved map of the World as known to the Ancients, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) Corrected to 1st June 1845. These sheets are from the first edition of atlas published under the imprimatur of Charles Knight, who purchased the Society's inventory, including the map plates, in 1846. The title-page carries a date of 1848. Knight was undertaking a revision of the maps for the Society even before he took possession of the plates, and as with the initial series, revisions were issued over time rather than all at once. For map sheets that had not been revised, including only to update the publisher's name, Knight drew from the existing inventory. Thus this atlas includes many map sheets with the imprimatur of Baldwin and Cradock, the original publishers. The SDUK began its map ... morepublishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. From which this map comes, was published in Paris in 1812 and was one of the best and most up-to-date atlases of the early-19th century. It used charming vignette scenes in the title, a practice to be copied by other French mapmakers and the John Tallis company in England. Malte-Brun, a Danish geographer and publisher who settled in Paris, used French engineer and geographer Alexandre Lapie, as well as engravers Jean-Baptiste Tardieu and Jean-Baptiste Chamouin, in the creation of his atlas. T his much sought-after map features a maze of rhumb lines radiating from eight compass roses. Four of which are located equidistantally on the Arctic Circle with their fleur-de-lys pointers aimed at the centrally located North Pole. This is the rare first state of the map with this example published for the 1640 Latin edition of the Blaeu Atlas Novus. Widely considered one of the most elegant map designs of the 17th century and historically important ... morewith regard to the exploration of the New World north. The genesis of the map has been subject to some confusion. An essentially identical plate was issued by the publisher Jan Jansson in 1637 who was by then the chief competitor of the Blaeu family, while this map was not published in a Blaeu atlas until the 1638 Dutch and French editions. Unfortunately this led Philip Burden in his The Mapping of North America to imply that Blaeu copied the Jansson map and this canard has been widely repeated in other references and auction descriptions. We believe this to be a mistaken reversal of authorship and that Jansson. Who was not really a cartographer at all but certainly a talented engraver and shrewd publisher, in fact copied Blaeu's work as he had done many times before. From 1790 onwards Justus Perthes enlarged his publisher’s list with histories and obituary lists. Amongst others the circumnavigation of Antonio Pigafetta and the life history of Martin Behaim. In 1814 he was joined by his son Wilhelm Perthes(1793–1853) who had been in the publishing house of Justus's nephew Friedrich Christoph Perthes at Hamburg. On Justus' death in 1816 in Gotha, Wilhelm took over the firm and laid the foundation of the geographical branch of the business for which it is chiefly famous. In ... more1801 the company published its first geographical book with a map of Germany by Adolf Schieler. In 1809 they published their first atlas. But the Napoleontic wars with their ever changing political and administrative boundaries did not form the right climate to do so and it soon became a financial disaster. Justus Perthes, however, was not so easily daunted and soon agreed with to a proposal by Adolf Stieler to publish the soon to be famous Stielers Handatlas. Stieler proposed to create the atlas together with Christian Gottlieb Reichard(1758–1837) who later drafted part of the maps. Before the first issue of the atlas could be distributed in 1816 Justus Perthes died and was succeeded by his then 23-year old son Wilhelm Perthes. Original antique map with hand coloring. ANTIQUE 1875 STEILERS HAND ATLAS WORLD ATLAS ENGRAVED COLOR PLATES
Antique large leatherbound Atlas. Inside the front cover page is HAND ATLAS uber und Alle Theile der erde und uber das weltgebaude Herausceceben von Adolf Stieler gotha Justus Perthes. Written in ink in the upper right hand corner of this page is the name. J. B. Sewall 1875. Most all of this atlas is written in German. There are over 80 copper plate stamped engraved maps that appear to be copper plate printed and hand colored. We believe this to be the sixth edition of this publication. Detailed portions of the multiple maps of the United States show a number of sections of the western portion of the U.S. as territories as many areas had not become states when this atlas was published. The condition of the maps portion of this atlas are quite good throughout with some foxxing(brown spotting) to the beginning and ending pages and limited amounts ... moreof foxxing in some interior pages. This leatherbound books front and rear heavy cover portions have broken free from the binding and will need a good book conservator to properly restore them. The binding and its limited gold leaf printing is also deteriorated and could use restoration. This is a great rarely seen edition of maps of the entire world as it was in the 1870's. Also known as L'Abbe Pluche, was a French priest who wrote one of the most popular natural history works of the 18th century- Le Spectacle de la Nature which was first published in 1732. Although primarily about natural history it also contained maps and engravings of a geographic nature in the fourth volume of eight published. It was also translated into English in 1740. 1906 edition of the Geologic Atlas of the US from the Department of the Interior. This one is the Cloud Peak-Ft. McKinney Folio of Wyoming. There is an index map on the cover and inside the first page gives the explanation of everything concerned in this area. Also there is a descriptive text. Topographic maps, areal geology maps, columnar sections, structure sections, illustration sheets and economic geology map. Shows some age along the edges, but everything is very vivid and all writing is very legible. No cracks, tears or missing pages. Overall I would say it is still in very good condition. It measures about 18 1/2" x 22" There are about 25 pages. Maps are very suitable for framing. W e do combine shipping on multiple items purchased and include delivery confirmation.
