I have to start off by saying this might be one of the nicest. Well constructed, high quality pieces of furniture that I have come across. The actual designer of this piece is undetermined but John Widdicomb had some of the best designers of the era making furniture for the company such as T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings and George Nakashima. This item features wonderful sculpted feet. With 3 dovetailed drawers on the exterior and one small drawer on the inside for ample storage, and stunning bookmatched wood grain that is beautifully displayed at the joining of the top and sides of the dresser. This bookmatching technique takes a highly skilled craftsman to make the veneer from the top and sides appear to be one continuous piece. Even the back of this dresser is very well constructed as pictured. The high style original solid brass star hardware are the perfect accent to this remarkable piece of furniture. This item dates back to around the 1960's and is in excellent vintage condition with only light signs of normal wear including some minor dings and light surface scratches but nothing substantial or out of the ordinary. The dresser measures approximately 47"h x 40"w x 20"deep. I have added many pictures so you can get the best idea of its beauty and condition and supersize all pictures for some great closeup shots. It is from John Widdecomb's Modern Styles line and was the first time Mr. Robsjohn-Gibbings ventured from his usual design palate of more traditional design. Beautiful in it's simplicity, it would work perfectly in any home for it would compliment all styles of design. The table is round. W/o extensions it measures 48 inches in diameter and its height is 29 1/4 inches. Each of the 3 extensions measures 48 inches long and 16 inches wide making the table 96 inches in length when all extensions are used. Chairs are 32 inches high. Floor to seat is 19 inches. Seat depth 16 1/2 inches. Width 18 inches. The table top will definitely need to ... morebe refinished. Sometime in it's past. The original finish was removed on top of the table. It has spots and color fading. The rest of the table and the 4 chairs has the original finish on them. Along with the expected wear, scuff marks and some finish loss is noted on some of the chairs and table legs/sides. Some veneer is missing in some areas. The chairs have been recovered at least once and a previous covering seems to be in place under the current one. One of the extensions has drip marks on the underside which may indicate that they have been refinished in the past. When placed in the table, the color and finish match everything on the set BUT the top of the table. All of the extensions are stamped with the same number. I'd previously attributed/listed this as real RG Widdicomb from photos of the same chair on Google images when you type in the designer and manufactures' name in the search. But after being told it wasn't real I pulled the listing, re-photographed, and relisted as"in the style of" Reupholstered a few years back- no stains or rips or tears. The legs have some nicks on them- please see pics. The chair measures 31" tall and 25" wide leg to leg. The seat is 21" deep and It is 27.5" long leg to leg. Vintage 1950's Widdecomb Dresser by Robsjohn Gibbings
For sale I have a vintage 1950's Widdecomb 3 drawer dresser designed by T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings. This rare find is unfortunately not is top condition and is being sold"as is" The dresser has two main defects. One. It needs to be repainted or laquered. You can see in pic 3 that there are small stapler holes where a previous owner staped fabric to the dresser. This defect would easily be corrected by a repaint. And second, the dresser is missing its original drawer pulls. Aside from these defects, the dresser is in good condition, structurally sound and beautifully crafted. The dresser measures 32 inch tall, by 36 inch wide, by 20 inch deep. This dresser would be nice project for someone willing to take it on. This has to be one of the most unique and well crafted sofas I have seen of this era. The sculpted frame features a total of 7 legs with double legs on each front corner. The wood frame follows the entire length of the sofa from the front legs all the way along the top rail and back down. The shape is uniquely angled out at the front corners for a curvaceous and aesthetically pleasing appeal. Please take note of the way the wood follows the sides of the sofa and dips down and up at the back. Also take note of the nicely angled and tapered legs. The original upholstery is very beautiful in a pink velvet like material and free of any smells or major spots with only maybe a few very ... moresmall dirt spots on the corner of the cushion but nothing substantial at all and will more than likely clean off. The original owners actually had plastic on the couch since they originally bought it. The original maker of this piece is unknown as there are no labels attached but this piece is possibly custom made but definitely in the manner of T H Robsjohn Gibbings. What a table! The table looks to be nearly 100 percent original with some small issues. The most notable is the ding to the top and a chip to the lower edge. The finish does have craze or age lines in the finish. The others are very minor and likely would be vastly improved with some touch up oil. We have not gone over this table with anything other than the ding for a touch of color. A piece for any collectors collection. We are very pleased to offer this outstanding dining table. 2 armchairs, and 4 sides chairs designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb. The Table is mahogany and in excellent condition. The top has been meticulously keep with custom table pads. Table comes with 2 14" leaves that are also in excellent condition. The armchairs or occasional chairs are in great vintage condition with normal wear for age and use. All chairs are covered in a white naughahyde that has normal wear for age. The side chairs are an early model of this chair and have a joint where the seat meets the back. This design was later replaced with a piece of wood with no joint. The joint does create a wobble in the seat back over time with normal wear. All of these pieces were purchased from the original owner who had custom made joint braces made for the side chairs. ... moreThey could probably be removed and joint could be tightened by a woodworker. The table is rock solid and all original. It does have some scratches to the finish on top as pictured. It does have some light wear from use but all is minor and it looks great. The signature is present as well as model number and date of manufacture. The dimensions are 23 1/2 x 29 1/2 x 22 1/2 high. In the mid century period several schools of thought were competing in the marketplace. Some thought modernism should be austere and others believed it should be clean. But incredibly rich. This lamp embodies this latter credo and Robsjohn Gibbings was rich modernism's prophet. In the late forties. Gibbings introduced a number of modern furnishings by the furniture maker Hansen. He liked to work with the richest materials, from the finest woods to rich marbles. A series of marble lamps were made that exemplified the posh interior design which was his trademark. He loved marble. As a designer/architect. He had designed whole ... morebathrooms with marble from the floor. Walls and sunken bath. Even fireplaces would often be framed in this luxurious manner. This lamp is unmarked. Like many Hansen lamps were but has all the attributes, including the original marble finial. That was a trademark of a Gibbings' design. As expected after 63 years. There are some small chips to the marble and oynx. The shade shows light wear. The lamp has all original electrics from socket to the cord and the lamp works perfectly. Switching on and off at the socket. This lamp will make a beautiful focal point for a New York penthouse or be perfectly at home in a mid century modern home designed by Marcel Breuer or Richard Neutra. Mid Century Modern Widdicomb Side Table Nightstand Robsjohn-Gibbings Henredon
This is a great John Widdicomb side table or nightstand. It has a glass top as well as one above the second bottom drawer. The drawer pills are done in brass and inset in the drawer. The top one is clear but the lower one has spots as seen in pic#7. This piece is solid and stable. The glass is free from scratches and chips. The drawers open and close smoothly. Vintage Mid Century Modern Frankl Robsjohn-Gibbings era Dining Table 2 leaves
Up for consideration is a Vintage Mid Century Modern Dining table with 2 leaves. It has factory identification stenciled on the bottom of the table as well as on one of the leaves. The table measures 42 inches wide by 64 inches long without leaves. Each leaf is 18 inches which adds an additional 36 inches to length when extended. This brings the length up 96 inches or 8 foot. The table is very well built with rounded tapered legs which are conjoined by a curving horizontal base. The table is heavy well built and a fine example of quality craftsmanship. After an exhaustive search an exact example could not be found in the historical record. Although similar examples seem to look as if it may have been produced by Brown Saltman Paul Laszlo Design or Robsjohns-Gibbings for Widdicomb. Robsjohn-Gibbings. Dates to the 1950s, directly out of an estate collection. Condition: Possibly later paint. Wear from use and paint loss. Three Mid Century Modern Chairs Robsjohn Gibbings or Conant Ball
Three hard-to-find mid-century modern chairs in the style of Robsjohn Gibbings. I can't confirm that they are Gibbings; they could be a Conant Ball design from the 1960s. Either way they are great. The walnut legs have been refinished in a medium to dark brown(photo to post soon) But the chairs have not been reupholstered and all three need it. The legs have been stored and have not been reattached to the seats since refinishing. Two of the chairs were purchased together and were reupholstered at some earlier point in time. The flower upholstery is original and serves as a great model for how any new upholstery job should look. I am selling all three for a great price. If you are looking for a fourth.
