Maker: Fritz Hansen Designer: Arne Jacobsen History: The chair was designed in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen was the architect with the swan chair(and the egg chair) Arne Jacobsen's work has organic form in furniture which is functional yet timeless. Condition: The chair is in very good condition. the fabric and the foam are in very good condition(please see pictures) The base is in very good condition(please see pictures. It has the original star shaped stem along with the chair height adjustment lever, neither of which the newer version from Fritz Hansen offers and so is the true collector piece and at a fraction of the new price. The swivel function works perfectly smoothly. The chair comes from a non-smoking environment and is firm and sturdy, ready for a new home. Object: Original Arne Jacobsen swan chair, red/blue woven fabric upholstery, height adjustable, swivel function, signed. This auction is for one chair ONLY of a pair I have up for auction. I have seen both The version with the 3 exposed screws APPEARS to be the Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen version. I am about 95% confident. The earliest version of the Arne Jacobsen stool is identical to this. Same legs. Same rubber stays, same 3 screws. IT IS NOT MARKED in any way that I can find. Originally it might have had a paper label. Or a stamp that has worn off. This example is in excellent condition. Teak laminate top is excellent. Legs are straight and strong with minimal dings. They hve no smoke odors and are not warped or abused,just normal aging are seen and the finish I beive t be original.The tubular chrome frames are not pitted.There is some veneer along the edge that has worn off in some areas, not very noticeable, no severe damage of any kind, the legs are in good condition, however some of the caps on the end of the chairs legs have worn through, but I understand they are replaceable. There are marks here and there in the finish on the tubular steel frames(please see examples in the pictures below) however, it shouldn't be a big problem to have these touched up to as new condition if you so should require. Price for this armchair new today- as far as I can tell- varies between roughly £2500 to £3500/ea. Depending on choice of upholstery and retailer. Originally released in 1969. The Cylinda line has won awards from the Danish Society of Industrial Design and the American Institute of Interior Designers. A previous owner drilled a hole in the base to permit hanging toast holder from a wall nail. Does not affect functionality. Just received from Denmark.
