Both are diamond shaped. Sugar bowl has pictures of song birds. Creamer has pictures of water fowl. Probably a pelican. Both measure about 4" high. Wonderful Japanesque art work. I loved it for its beautiful leather work but never put it to use after finding it in an old estate over 30 years ago. Exquisite workmanship and highly decorative, finest leather is supple and thin, polished to a wonderful glow. Hand tooled with Aesthetic Era designs, almost looks like an ostrich leather effect, and stamped in rich gilt gold and black. Has a smooth hard feel that is very nice. Backed with some sort of cardboard material and lined in paper with writing about leather and case and luggage styles of the day. Measures 4 1/2" wide by 4 1/4" tall. approximately. Stiff, not flimsy. Has rounded corners and and shallow convex shape. European, likely French ... morealthough the text on the paper lining is in English, British not American, colour, etc) I was told this may be the cover for a Maquet travel clock, but I cannot verify this. It is scarce to find these, as most travel clocks had plain leather covers, and this is highly unusual and very fancy indeed. ANTIQUE AESTHETIC JAPONISME CHASED ENGRAVED DECORATED SILVER CHILD BABY CUP Welcome to my auction- Up for your consideration is this wonderful example of a Japonisme decorated item from the Aesthetic period. The cup features a classic engraved design on two sides with either a fan or a baby rattle surrounded by a dragonfly. Flowers, leaves and lily pads. It has initials JR in fancy script on one side. Another indicator that it is a child's cup. The cup is silver metal but I am not certain what type, believed to be silver plate with most of it worn away, it looks like a some type of pewter or tin. The only legible mark is a number either 6 or 9 and possible a marker's mark above and to the right of the number as shown in last photo, maker unknown. BRIEF HISTORY AESTHETIC/JAPONISME MOVEMENT- In 1853. After nearly 250 years of self-imposed ... moreisolation, Imperial Japan yielded to the cannon threats of American Commodore Matthew C. Perry and almost immediately let loose a flow of Japanese goods to the West which astounded Europe and America with unheard-of treatments of line, shape, and color that would inspire revolutions in fine art, architecture, and particularly interior decoration for decades to come. One of these trends, the Aesthetic movement, carried the appreciation for Eastern design ideas to new heights and set the stage for the Arts& Crafts era that flourished a short generation later(1900-1925. Many Japanese motifs were based on conventionalized forms of the natural world. Such as flowers(especially chrysanthemums) birds(cranes) and insects(dragonflies and butterflies) Most importantly, Japanese artisans were masters in the use of strong lines, open or undecorated space, and restraint and understatement in general, treatments that were utterly unlike the overcomplicated and profusely decorated furnishings in vogue during the Victorian era. This crimson plush-covered photograph album probably dates to the 1880s. For the photographs in it(now all removed) were of the 1870s and early 1880s. The exterior is in reasonable vintage condition. The velvet is pressed somewhat flat here and there, and darkened, perhaps from being stored on a dusty shelf; and the clasp is missing. The cabinet frames inside are of different sizes(see photos) Some are torn. A few quite badly. It measures 10 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 3" And it is heavy(over 2500 gm) I will send by MyHermes. With carved, and polychromed decoration. With original olive and gold cut velvet upholstery. APPROXIMATE SIZE: 29-1/2 inches high x 19 inches wide x 17-1/2 inches deep. APPROXIMATE DATE: 1872 MARKINGS: None that I can see. There is a small very old. 19th. c. paper label on the back, that is hard to read.it may say helen. This chair very well could be signed or numbered on the seat rail under the upholstery. I am not going to take it apart to find out. If you know about Herter chairs, you know that they are rarely signed. This chair is documented in a Herter Brothers interior. see notes below) CONDITION: It looks to me to be in entirely original condition. That said. ... moreIt is far from perfect and is being sold as-is. It is badly scuffed in places and has suffered loss to gilding in those areas. The very top crest is a little wiggly. But I dont think in any risk of coming apart and probably can easily be firmed up. There are a few cracks on the front legs which I never noticed until doing this listing. There is a white sticker on the back that I do not want to remove as I fear it will remove gilding. The upholstery was wonderful at one time and is good to have for historical accuracy, but it is badly worn. Considering its delicate nature, I think the condition is not so bad, and great that it is still all original. NOTES: This chair is like a piece of jewelry. It is the epitomy of the term. art furniture . An identical chair is pictured in the Herter Brothers exhibition catalogue on page 161 in the interior of the Milton Latham residence in Menlo Park. CA. It is distinctly Chinese in taste, and I suspect it would have been the design of Christian Herter. This truly is a museum quality piece. If one desired. Brown Transferware Clyde Pottery Scotland Pitcher, Aesthetic Period, 14 In High
Offered for your bid is a brown transferware ironstone pitcher from the 19th century. Made in Greenock, Scotland sometime between 1900-1905. It was made at the Clyde Pottery Ltd. It was part of a wash set at one time. Pieces from this company are hard to find. The pitcher is a wonderful example of the Aesthetic Period with its nature design of birds, butterfly and flora. The piece is marked"Wardeck" a German province) for the pattern name. It stands approximately 14 inches high and is quite heavy, a well made sturdy vessel. It is in very good condition for its age with no discolorations and the design motifs are beautiful. In the condition area I mentioned the hairline. About 9" in diameter across the top. About 3 3/8" tall. Both top and foot have scalloped edge. Background transfer is a soft blue. The birds and branches are brown with gold detailing. Hallmarked on underside. Registration diamond-shaped mark is at the edge. I believe the right side of that mark would tell us an exact year. But it does not show. There is an impressed mark as well"84589" To the best of my knowledge, this puts it in the 1870s-1880s time period, but if exact date matters to you, please do your own research. Phenomenal antique Burmese glass mantle vase. One of a pair- see my other auctions by seller page for the complementary vase. This vase is large- 8" tall; top diameter 3 5/8" The coloration of the vase is elusive. It shades from pink to yellow. Though in some light the vase appears pinkish at the bottom, almost like a peachblow. The pictures of the underneath of the vase convey the yellow color more clearly. The vase fluoresce bright yellow under black light. The vase is matte finish on the outside and shiny on the inside. The vase features an exquisitely hand painted scene with birds and water and branches with blossoms. Part of the birds are in relief. The vase has a ground pontil. The vase is numbered on the bottom. It dates to between Circa 1901 and 1910 when it became fashionable for ladies to carry such a“necessity” on their person. These specialized“vanity” chatelaines were designed so that ladies could wear their necessities attached to the waist by a chatelaine clip or pin. VICTORIAN ~ AESTHETIC MOVEMENT AURORA IL. U.S.A. QUADRUPLE PLATE This 3 piece set of a cream/ milk jug. Sugar bowl with lid and waste bowl was made by Aurora IL. U.S.A. c.1880. Aurora was known for their attention to ornate detail and this is shown on these three pieces. The high neck on all pieces is 1 1/4" high is covered with a fine diamond pattern. The handles have a fine pattern of Ivy leaves ending in a pierced star design in a circle. The bodies are hand engraved with flowers and leaves on one side and leaves on the other. The sugar basin lid has a pierced knob with flowers. These three antique pieces were silver plated. But with their age and cleaning only traces of the original silver remain. There are some age related small dinges and marks. The colour of the three pieces is more the colour of the sugar bowl, the base metal.2
